Heroine Overview

Now, where's that idiot?
~ Utahime about Satoru.

Utahime Iori is a supporting character in the anime/manga series Jujutsu Kaisen. Utahime is a jujutsu sorcerer who teaches at Kyoto Jujutsu High. Her innate technique, "Solo Forbidden Area," allows her to augment the output and amount of a target's cursed energy.

She is voiced by Yoko Hikasa in Japanese and by Tara Sands in English. Hikasa has also voiced Rias Gremory in High School DxD and Emi Yusa in The Devil Is a Part-Timer!. Sands has also voiced Biscuit Krueger in Hunter x Hunter and Mokuba Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Appearance[]

Utahime Iori stands at five feet and four inches tall, about average for a Japanese woman, and has a slender physique. She has brown eyes, thin eyebrows, and a prominent scar that travels horizontally on the right side of her face and ends just over the bridge of her nose. She has long, black hair that has a dark purple tinge to it. In 2006, she wore her hair into two loose pigtails that fell down her chest. Currently, she does away with her pigtails and instead ties a few strands of her hair into a mini ponytail at the back of her head.

While on duty, Utahime wears brown boots and the traditional uniform of a Shinto shrine maiden. Said uniform consists of a pure white "kosode," a type of robe with baggy sleeves and overlapping front panels, a pair of scarlet "hakama," a type of pleated skirt-like trousers tied at the waist that was worn over the lower part of the kosode, and a white ribbon that keeps her hair in place. While off duty, she wears casual clothing.

History[]

In August of 2006, Utahime and the Grade 1 Sorcerer Mei Mei were sent to investigate the possibility of a curse emergence in a mansion in Hamamatsu City. Upon entering the mansion, they soon realized that the corridor they were walking down kept going no matter how far they travelled. Realizing that the curse was creating a spatial barrier of some kind to trap them, Utahime and Mei Mei set about investigating a way out. They set down markers and then walked for about thirty minutes, travelling about fifteen kilometers. They didn't come across their marker again, indicating that the curse wasn't subjecting them to a spatial loop.

Mei Mei theorized that the curse was simply overlapping space as they moved, similar to an escalator. Utahime proposed that they test the theory by splitting up. Before they could put their plan into motion, the whole building collapsed around them at the behest of Satoru Gojo. Gojo mocked Utahime when he saw her. As she defended herself, the curse tried to attack her from behind. Suguru Geto intervened and defeated the curse, before joining in on making fun of Utahime. Shoko Ieiri explained that they'd been sent to check on them, as they'd been radio silent for two days. Gojo theorized that the curse had been distorting time rather than space.

Over the following decade, Utahime Iori received a prominent scar on her face and was promoted to the rank of a Semi-Grade 1 Sorcerer. She eventually became a teacher, under the elderly Principal Yoshinobu Gakuganji, at Kyoto Jujutsu High, one of the two institutions in the country that taught the next generations of jujutsu sorcerers. Utahime is popular among her students, which in 2018 consists of the first-year Arata Nitta, the second-years Mai Zenin, Kasumi Miwa, and Kokichi Muta, and the third-years Noritoshi Kamo, Aoi Todo, and Momo Nishimiya. She watches baseball and football, and goes to karaoke in her spare time.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Energy Manipulation: Jujutsu sorcerers are humans capable of perceiving and manipulating cursed energy, a type of naturally replenishing energy derived from the negative emotions that exist inside humans. Sorcerers have higher than average amounts of cursed energy and can draw upon their body's own supply of it to create supernatural phenomena. The fundamentals of jujutsu are intrinsically linked to traditional Japanese Shinto and Buddhist beliefs, and so all jujutsu techniques require some form of activation ritual which usually included throwing hand gestures and speaking certain phrases. Most sorcerers negate aspects of these activation rituals to make techniques quicker to use, at the cost of a reduction in the affect of the technique.
    • Energy Augmentation: Some jujutsu sorcerers are born with the inherent ability to use a specific cursed technique, known as an "innate technique," which can often be used solely by them or members of their family. Utahime Iori has an innate technique called "Solo Forbidden Area", which allows her to temporarily increase the cursed energy amount and power of a target. The target can either be herself or one willing recipient within a certain radius of herself. Like all jujutsu, the activation of Solo Forbidden Area requires a unique activation ritual if Utahime seeks to use it at its maximum potential. The ritual for Utahime's innate technique consists of her singing, dancing, and throwing hand gestures while someone else plays music on a traditional instrument. By using said ritual when activating her technique, its effectiveness can increase by twenty percent.

Trivia[]

  • The name "Solo Forbidden Area" was likely derived from Kinku, a single by Japanese singer Akina Nakamori released in 1983. The song contains the lyrics "sorosoro kinku," which is the name of Utahime's innate technique before being translated into English. Nakamori also had a number of albums with "Utahime" in their name.
