Vincent/Valerie, also known as V, is the main protagonist of the 2020 action rpg game Cyberpunk 2077. They are a mercenary involved in a series of singular events during the year 2077, which toppled the balance of power in Night City.
V is voiced by either Gavin Drea or Cherami Leigh depending on player customization options.
Biography[]
Depending on the lifepath chosen by the player during character customization, the games prologue and V's backstory will change accordingly.
In the Nomad lifepath, V is a former member of the Bakkers clan who abandons them when they are absorbed into the larger Snake Nation. They are hired by Jackie Welles to help smuggle contraband into Night City. After they are betrayed by the corrupt border guards, V and Welles partner up to escape an ambush. After discovering their cargo to be an iguana, V accepts Jackie's offer to stay with him whilst they set up in Night City.
In the Streetkid lifepath, V is a resident of Night City who returns following a failed attempt to settle in Atlanta, Georgia. They are forced to work for Kirk Sawyer to steal a valuable car to help clear a debt to a friend. During the job, they are ambushed by Jackie Welles, who has also been hired to steal the car, and subsequently caught by the NCPD. After being beaten by the police, V and Welles talk and befriend each other. Jackie offers V to stay at his whilst they reacquaint themselves in Night City.
In the Corpo lifepath, V is a member of Arasaka's counterintelligence division. After their boss botches a job, they are given the task of eliminating their rival to cover up their failure. Whilst preparing for the job with their contact Jackie Welles, V is ambushed by personnel working for the rival, stripping them of their job and privileges. After Jackie frightens them off, V stays with him until they can rebuild their life.
Cyberpunk 2077[]
Regardless of each lifepath, V partners with Jackie as they start mercenary work in Night City. After six months, they and the netrunner T-Bug are hired by Dexter DeShawn to steal a prototype of Arasaka's Relic from Yorinobu Arasaka. Midway through the heist, V and their allies witness Yorinobu confront and murder his father Saburo Arasaka. Despite the increased security measures, V is able to escape as the crew's only survivor, with them being implanted with the Relic by a dying Jackie to ensure it remains stabilized. Whilst meeting with DeShawn in the aftermath, V is betrayed and murdered by the fixer to ensure he cannot be tied to the heist.
Due to the Relic being implanted in their system, V is revived and recovered by former Arasaka bodyguard Goro Takemura. Whilst they recover from their injuries, V learns that the device is overriding their consciousness with an engram of Johnny Silverhand. To remove the Relic or find a way to ensure their survival, V can work with a variety of jobs and allies to investigate the device. These include hunting the creator of the Relic Anders Hellman, investigating who organized the heist to learn if they can remove it, and working with Goro to expose Yorinobu's actions to his sister Hanako. In the expansion Phantom Liberty, V is recruited by operatives of the government to rescue the president Rosalind Myers from Night City's Dogtown.
In most endings for the game, V can mount an attack on Arasaka Tower to access Mikoshi either by themselves or with allies. Alternatively, they can also ally with Hanako Arasaka to usurp Yorinobu and bring Arasaka back under the control of a revived Saburo. Several endings also can result in their death either from suicide or during their attack. If successful, V learns that the Relic has made changes to their body that has made it incompatible for them, leaving them with six months to live if they remain in it. Depending on their choices, they can either remain in their body (joining the Aldecados or becoming a legend in Night City), surrender it to Johnny whilst they merge with Alt Cunningham, or sign their soul Arasaka and become an engram in the hopes they can be revived in a suitable host.
