“ | I have no name, I am but two days old... Just kidding. You can call me V. | „ |
~ V introduces himself to Dante with a quote from William Blake's "Infant Joy". |
“ | I know... We are one and the same, you and I. But you've lost me, and I've lost you. Yet we are connected, by that one feeling. "While thy branches mix with mine, and our roots together join." | „ |
~ V quoting "Love and harmony combine" as he merges with Urizen to become Vergil once again. |
V is the tritagonist of the 2019 action-adventure video game Devil May Cry 5, the fifth main installment of the Devil May Cry franchise. He is an enigmatic and mysterious figure who is trying to stop the devil known as Urizen. He is later revealed to be the human split half of Vergil, Dante's twin brother, and Nero's father.
He is voiced by Brian Hanford in the English version and Kōki Uchiyama in the Japanese version. He is modeled after Owen Hamze.
Appearance[]
V's physical features are having black hair (naturally white hair) and green eyes. He has tattoos over his body and wears a long sleeveless open black coat and black pants with sandals and wears a necklace and bracelet.
History[]
Background[]
“ | Trish: What was that demon, V? Where did it come from? Urizen is not a demon. I know that for a fact because I'm from the underworld. (notices V's crippled state) My God, what are you, then? V: It doesn't matter. I'm a shadow of my former self who lost everything. I will tell you the story of my birth. (the flashback of crippled Vergil returned to his childhood home after being freed from Mundus' brainwashing into Nelo Angelo flows through his mind) Suffering defeat after defeat, that man's body was reaching its limit. Breaking down. But he couldn't die yet. The man had a job that must be done: To defeat his twin brother. |

~ V revealed his and Urizen's origin to Trish. |
As told in Before the Nightmare and Visions of V, V was born after Vergil, separate his human half from his demon half, the latter which he christened as Urizen. At that time, the newly born V witnessed Urizen's birth before the latter set out to unleash Qliphoth upon the city. Left with weak human body and four demons that embodies Vergil's trauma from his time as Nelo Angelo each taking form based on Mundus's minions - Griffon, Shadow, Nightmare, and Phantom, V vowed to stop the large-scale destruction and hopefully remerge with Urizen before his body completely crumbles.
Visions of V gives insights about how V recruited his familiars: Soon after his birth, Griffon snatched V for safety just as Vergil, without his human half, transformed into Urizen. V and Urizen realized that they need each other to survive and stopping Urizen at the same time. Furthermore, Griffon deduced himself as essentially "dream" without any substance in terms of his inability to execute weakened demons that forces V to do it instead with his cane. After the two destroyed an attacking empusa, Griffon, having reached his limit, urged V to make his choice about their contract quickly before his dying form completely melted into nothingness, prompting the man to reluctantly accept it, saving the avian demon's life and officially making him his familiar.
After awaken from a nightmare where he was painfully converted into Nelo Angelo as Vergil, V and Griffon set out for the next familiar like the latter to recruit. Suddenly, they were ambushed by Shadow that initially hostile and even managed to steal V's cane. The duo then gave chase only to see it crippled by another, spider-like Phantom. A battle ensued with V and Griffon successfully enlisted Shadow to their cause at the cost of them forced to destroy Phantom due to the latter too arrogant to be reasoned with. Although disturbed by the fact that his familiars were indeed embodiments of his (Vergil)'s trauma back in his days as Mundus' slave, this only adding more flames to his resolve to stop Urizen.
More determined than ever, V challenged the last familiar, Nightmare, at a church despite Griffon's fear towards the demon as it shared the original's immense powers, remarking how Mundus found original Nightmare too overpowered than he predicted, having enough power to wipe entire Underworld itself. V however, remained adamant to press on and attempted to confront Nightmare only to be overpowered and devoured by the beast. Fighting its illusions, V, motivated by traumas of his whole self Vergil, finally reached Nightmare's core and defeated it, dispelling the illusion and dissolving the demon into its core. Their fight soon attracted other demons who then converged upon the church with Griffon become panic and insisted that Nightmare is too uncontrollable, but V remained unfazed as he psychological bend it to its knees. His efforts soon paid off as Nightmare, upon establishing its contract with V, laid waste upon the attacking demons and saved his and his familiars' lives, though Nightmare's power and exhaustion from the whole fight eventually takes its toll on V who then passed out as his familiars turns back into tattoos around his skin to replenish their powers.

Power and Abilities[]
Although weaker than his demon half Urizen, V is still a formidable combatant. To make up his poor defense, he uses his familiars, Griffon, Nightmare, and Shadow to cripple his enemies before finishing them with his cane.
V's Cane[]
V's weapon of choice is his signature cane which, according to Nico, lacked actual power beside being a suitable conduit for V's demonic powers. With it, he can perform following feats:
- Self-Teleportation: V can teleport with use of demonic energy and his cane as the conduit. He has two teleportation techniques; Gambit (reappearing at where he hurled his cane at) and Touch And Move (teleporting to the next enemy as soon as he finished his current target off).
- Demonic Power Absorption: V can fatally drain a weakened demon's energy by impaling them with his cane, restoring his and his familiars' health and killing it in process.
- Royal Fork: On the same vein of Vergil's Summoned Swords, V can conjure multiple floating copies of his cane which then deployed to finish off multiple targets at once.
- Demonic Energy Infusion: V can infuse his demonic energy into the cane, increasing the damage from his blows with it.
V's Familiars[]
V's Familiars are demons that born from Vergil himself as much as V and Urizen themselves. Whereas V and Urizen are Vergil's human half and demon half respectively, the familiars are manifestation of Vergil's trauma from his time as Nelo Angelo, taking forms of demons under his command while under Mundus' influence. Originally there are four demons, though only three that he managed to recruit because of the fourth, Phantom, chose to die fighting its own independence rather than joining V's cause.
Griffon[]
“ | One of the demons V has at his beck and call. Apparently this chatty bird-thing specializes in shock and awe— it hits everything with lightning strikes. Now, my demonology texts show some references to a demon just like this one, but it was defeated by Dante years ago. Just a coincidence, I guess... I sure as heck can't find out anything more about this pecker. |
„ |
~ Nico's note about V's Griffon which shares his name with electrokinetic avian demon Dante vanquished long ago |
Avian demon greatly resembled his namesake counterpart and even shares same powers to the boot. Talkative, foul-mouthed, and wisecracking, he constantly insults other people or makes digs at their expense. Yet at the same time, he has a kind side and greatly cares about his comrades as well as being voice of reason among the three familiars, constantly worries about V's well-being which doesn't help by the man's recklessness.
Shadow[]
“ | One of the demons that keeps V from gettin' himself killed. Seems to stick to the whole big black cat motif for the most part, but it can shift shape when it wants to. Again, the old texts collected by the Order of the Sword talk about a beast just like this one, only it never would have played nice with a human. Around V, though, this thing's as meek as a buttercup in a breeze. And don't tell me it's just 'cause V's good with animals. |

~ Nico's note about V's Shadow. |
Feline demon that shares the appearance and powers as his namesake demon species. That said, he lacked the latter's immunity to physical attacks when fully formed, nor ability to generate shadowy spikes to protect his core nor self-destruct. His shapeshifting extends to assuming human disguise instead of just for defense and offense as confirmed in Devil May Cry 5: Before the Nightmare, though his inability to speak human language proves to be a dead giveaway.
Personality-wise, he is akin to loyal attack dog; aggressive yet disciplined, ready to attack at V's command as well as affectionate despite their rough first meeting. While unable to speak, Shadow nonetheless intelligent and able to understand his master's words. Even Nico notes regular Shadows being hostile towards humans by contrast. Visions of V confirmed such loyalty being stemmed from the gratitude toward V: Shadow was initially confused upon coming to existence and, thinking that he was an actual member of his namesake demon species, stole V's cane due to it reeking with scent of Empusa its owner killed with earlier in hopes of it led him to a portal to the Underworld somehow. Unfortunately, when V and Griffon caught up with him, Shadow ran afoul with the rampaging Phantom. Unlike Phantom, Shadow wisely chose to join forces with V and Griffon to get out of such hectic situation.
Phantom[]
The only familiar who rejected V. He shared same appearance, powers, and even personality as the original.
In Visions of V, Phantom was having Shadow on his mercy when V and Griffon showed up. Despite Griffon's pleas to make contract with V or risk fading away, Phantom stubbornly and proudly rejected such proposal, not wanting to serve some weak human. In his hubris, he seemingly killed V only to realize too late that the recovered Shadow fooled him by mimicking the latter's appearance before skewering him with such force that his body got pulverized. What remained of Phantom was a core V subsequently destroyed, killing him.
Nightmare[]
“ | The last of V's demon helpers. Unlike the other two, doesn't seem like this thing thinks for itself. Near as I can make out, it's only got three purposes: destruction, destruction, and destruction. Also unlike V's other two helpers, I'm not seein' any references to a demon like this one in any of the old Order of the Sword texts. What does that mean? That not even the Order knew this thing existed? |
„ |
~ Nico's note about Nightmare. |
A familiar assuming the form of Mundus' namesake demonic bioweapon and shared same devastating powers to the boot, so much that Griffon initially skeptical with V's odds in making contract with it.
Compared to the original, the familiar version of Nightmare had more personality beyond an automaton designed purely for combat; during its first encounter with V, Griffon, and Shadow, Nightmare displayed self-preservation, recognizing them as a threat and easily bested the trio in combat. However, V's resolve saw him overpowered the familiar as soon as they engaged in psychological confrontation leading to him seized Nightmare's core from the inside. Acknowledging defeat, Nightmare eventually relented and answered to V once the latter returned its core, becoming his new familiar in time to dispatch a swarm of demons drawn into the commotion they caused.
Trivia[]
- Despite being portrayed by Brian Hanford through both voice and motion capture, V's design bears eerie resemblance to Adam Driver (specifically when portraying Kylo Ren). However, as confirmed by both Matt Walker and Hideaki Itsuno, this was unintentional in Capcom's part as the character was developed long prior to the release of The Force Awakens, with the latter remarked their surprise over the aforementioned resemblance.
- There are hints of V being Vergil's human half;
- Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare share similar appearance, name, and powers as demons Dante fought on Mallet Island and in Griffon's admission, represent the physical manifestations of Vergil's trauma during his time as Nelo Angelo.
- V's actual hair color, only revealed when he summoned his familiars all at once, was white, a trait all from Sparda's bloodline carry.
- V's name is technically initial of Vergil's own and the book of William Blake poetry he carries happened to be the same one Vergil read as a child.
- The way V swings his cane was suspiciously similar to one of Vergil's combos with the Yamato. Even his Royal Fork technique (summoning energy copies of his cane) was too reminiscent to the latter's Summoned Swords.
- V's apparent disgust toward Proto Angelo and Scudo Angelo, replicas of Vergil's brainwashed self Nelo Angelo, specifically stating "What evil lurks, I must destroy."
- During his attempt to seemingly stab Dante with Sword of Sparda as a ruse to wake him up, V not only remarked the Devil Arm being too much for him (subtle hint of Vergil's previous attempt to wield the sword as the Force Edge in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening), but the rage he felt toward Dante was too real, hinting their actual connection. Even like with Urizen in early part of Devil May Cry V, when Dante's eyes snapped open as expected, V's reflection was seen in them, once more recreating the opening scene in Devil May Cry 3.
- Some of his battle quotes ("Scum!" "Blast," "Die!", and "Begone!") were shared by Vergil and Nero. Not to mention about the one exclusive to V and the former ("What an eyesore").
