Take me instead, you raven bitch!
~ Vax to the Matron of Ravens, trading his soul for Vex’s.

Vax'ildan "Vax" Vessar is one of the main protagonists of the adult animated fantasy series The Legend of Vox Machina, based on campaign one of the Dungeons & Dragons podcast web series Critical Role.

He is a member of Vox Machina and the twin brother of Vex'ahlia. Vax is a half-elf rogue whose mother was killed by Thordak before the events of the series, which makes him one of his archenemies alongside his sister.

He is voiced by Liam O'Brien, who also voiced Gaara in Naruto, Akihiko Sanada in Persona 3, 4 Arena, Q and Q2 and Inigo in Fire Emblem: Awakening and Fates.

Biography[]

Background[]

Along with his twin sister, Vex'ahila, he was born in the village of Byroden with their human mother for the first decade of their life before being sent to Syngorg with their elven father, where they were treated with scorn for being half-bloods.

Wanting the see their mother again, they saw to their horror that Byroden and everyone in it had been desecrated by the red dragon Thordak. The twins would learn combat training there. Vex would learn to use a bow, and Vax, daggers.

At some point during their childhoods, Vex & Vax found a wounded bear, who Vax would mercy-kill. They would then find the bear had a cub, who Vex willingly took in despite Vax's initial protests, naming him Trinket, gaining his loyalty as an animal companion.

Season 1[]

Briarwoods arc[]

Vax participates in a drinking contest in a tavern in Emon with his friends. Grog won and Vax knew it was fruitless beating him, while Vex stated it was the quickest way to get drunk. An orc named Agar walks by and badmouths the party, eyeing Vax stating he's too weak to touch himself. Vax takes the orc off guard by asking if he's offering to help, putting him in an awkward spot. Vax states he's only asking for a hand, giving Grog the opportunity to chop it off. Soon after a bar fight ensues. In the midst, Vax snags a bag of coins from a patron. The tavern keeper breaks it up and demands to know who's going to pay for damages. When they can't, she throws them all out.

Hope seems lost until Scanlan shows up with a wanted poster to kill a ravaging beast, they go to the council of Tal'dorei, who after some convincing, take Vox Machina to the area where a monster has been attacking. The party passes through a humble village on the way. As Vax plays with one of the coins he stole, he impresses a small boy, who asks if he's a wizard. Vax tells him no, but continues to awe him before giving him the coin.

As they travel further, they find their target, a blue dragon. Vax, along with the others tries his best against the creature, but nothing he or anyone else did could phase it. Eventually, the dragon shoots his lightning breath at a mountain, causing rocks to fall down on Vox Machina before departing. The party manages to escape with the help of Keyleth's vines.

Vax then states that they should leave the mission at once, seeing it as nothing but a suicide mission. When they are in agreement that there was nothing they could do, they took off together. They return to the village to see it had been destroyed by the dragon. When Vax sees a boy he had befriended gravely injured, he beckons Pike for her help. Pike tries to heal the boy but she had no healing energy left, and the boy died in Vax's arms, much to the half-elf's heartbreak. This tragedy prompted Vox Machina to complete their mission.

The party returns to Emon, informing Uriel that while they did survive the fight, the dragon was still at large. Uriel made the decision to bring the fight to the dragon, dismissing Vox Machina from the palace. Vex'ahlia then reveals she felt the presence of someone working with the dragon in the council, meaning one of them was a mole. She believed it to be Fince likely because of his creepy exterior. Vex then carries out tasks for Vax & Pike to go to Gilmore's while the rest of them look for Fince. When Scanlan, finds where Fince was going, he gathers everyone to come and see.

Vax & Pike go to Gilmore's, where the latter greets himself and upon seeing Vax'ildan, the two flirt momentarily before Pike subtly breaks it up. Vax asks Gilmore for advice on killing a dragon since he can't afford a weapon that can directly kill one. Gilmore gives him some vague advice as that was what two silver was worth. Vax promised Gilmore dinner as thanks for the assistance. Later, Scanlan gathers everyone to find Fince after he entered Krieg's home. After a couple failed attempts to get the locked door open, Vax takes a toothpick off of Grog's sandwich and picks the lock with it. When they go inside, Vex tries to assign investigation tasks to everyone until Vax finds a hidden door to the cellar. They eventually find Fince stealing documents from Krieg's cellar. Fince tries to explain himself until Krieg shows up and murders him. Vax was admittedly impressed at how Krieg could perform a sneak attack wearing metal armor. Krieg runs away and the party gives chase to him, landing themselves in a room filled with magic. he throws a book at him, which bounces off his head and into the painting, revealing a hidden portal, which they go through. Vax flirtatiously congratulates Keyleth on it.

What they see on the other side is a treasure trove. Vax, along with most of the party is overjoyed by the sight of the wealth, but Vex soon snaps herself out of it and realizes it belongs to the dragon they are after. Krieg shows back up and reveals to have actually been the dragon all along. Another fight ensues and Brimscythe begins to manhandle the party in battle a second time. When they have a moment, the party devises a plan. Scanlan creates an illusion to trick the party. With Brimscythe hoodwinked, the party each play their part in killing the dragon. Scanlan throws Vax with his magical hand, allowing Vax to slit the dragon's throat before Grog finished him off. They then run as fast as they can as the place began to collapse. They return to the council, who congratulates and thanks Vox Machina for their victory, giving them a deed and key to their new keep as a reward. Vax then sentimentally tells his sister they now have a new home.

The following morning, Vax is preparing breakfast for himself until he gets punched in the crotch by Grog, who announces, "7 to 2!". Lady Allura shows up seeking an audience. Vax greets her formally and half-jokingly asks if she had a house-warming gift for them. She informs them that Sovereign Uriel expects them at his banquet. Vax assures her they will be on their best behavior before impulsively getting his revenge on grog by elbowing him in the groin. They eventually make it to the banquet the following night. Begrudgingly leaving their weapons at the main booth.

Later at the banquet, Vax notices Percy's panic attack upon seeing the Briarwoods. Upon learning they would be staying over night, Vax offers to sneak into their room. The party, excluding Vax then attend Uriel's table while Vax silently enters the Briarwoods' room. He finds a treasure box and opens it up. Using his dexterous skills, he unlocks a hidden area within the box that had a tomb written about the Whispered One, frightening the half-elf.

But his fright intensified when the Briarwoods showed up in the room, catching the rogue in the act. Vax tried to charm them with compliments and claimed he was just setting things up for them. Ultimately, the fear got to him and he tried to run, but Sylas grabbed him by the throat and magically charmed him before sinking his fangs into his neck, tasting his blood and snapping him out of the charm. Vax hastily ran through the window and landed into the water fountain, where the Briarwoods caught up with him. He whispers the safe word before passing out.

After Vex sensed Vax was in imminent danger, they collected their weapons and ran out of the building to save Vax, who was just about to be killed by Sylas. Pike rushes over to Vax and heals him, much to his gratitude. He was too weak to fight however. After a long fight, Delilah later calls for their carriage driver, Desmond. The couple then take off, leaving Desmond behind. As Percy gets ready to kill Desmond, the party is stopped and seized by Uriel's guards.

Vax and the others are taken before Uriel who reprimands them for attacking the Briarwoods and thus, ruining the banquet. Lady Allura calms him down, promising to handle the party accordingly, by putting them under house arrest, and they get subjugated and locked up by the guards of Emon.

Vex takes the time to ask him what was going through his head when the Briarwoods showed up. Percy states he didn't owe them information about his past. Vex retorts that he shot Desmond and intended to kill him. Vax added on that the boy was simply frightened after his hand got shot when he was defenseless. While Percy concedes he may have gotten carried away, but his friends didn't experience the Briarwoods like he had. He went into depth that the Briarwoods murdered his family and made his life hell. Percy finds a secret opening in the room that leads to a hallway, which leads to a way out, but Jarett catches them and has them separated. Vax is locked up with Vex and Scanlan. Vex half-suggested to her brother that they make a run for it and leave the others behind. But they both unspokenly agreed that they wouldn't do that.

Once Grog escapes from his confinement with Pike, he warns the others about incoming wraiths. Understanding they were under attack, Jarett gives them weapons to fend off the wraiths.

The wraiths gain the upper hand at the start of the battle as they were in darkness and could not by hit by their victims. That changes however, when Keyleth finally conjures light, rendering the wraiths vulnerable. The party could finally hit and destroy them.

Vax and the others (save Pike) take off for Whitestone come the morning. Vax takes part in breaking into Gilmore's shop with the other half-elves, only to be caught by Gilmore. However, he chose to be lenient and let them purchase what they came for. When Vax picks up a wooden stake and Vex puts a pile of enchanted arrows on the counter, Gilmore asks what their current mission is. When Keyleth says they are hunting a vampire, Gilmore offers them holy water to aid them in their journey. Vax and Gilmore continue to subtly flirt as Vex looks for more items. They then catch up with Grog, Scanlan, and Percy, who have stolen a horse carraige.

On the way, Vax notices Grog weeping over Pike's absence. Vax attempts to comfort him by assuring Pike would be okay, but Grog was really more worried about how they would fare without her.

Vex has Percy stop the cart when she feels a disturbing presence. It turns out to be monstrous canine creatures sent by Delilah. They capture Scanlan as he had Delilah's book. The party chases after them all the way to a cliff. Noticing a couple of the monsters chasing them as well, Grog & Vax fight them head on. Both monsters hop into the carriage. Vax gets bitten by one of them, but Grog tosses it out after it bit Vax. The party then notices how dangerously close they are to the cliff and they all jump out, losing their carriage and stuff they bought from Gilmore in the process.

When they find a spot to make camp, Keyleth treats Vax's injuries when fighting the canine. The group later talks about what their craziest kill was. Vax goes first, explaining how he threw a dagger in the head of a humanoid tiger, (presumably a rakshasa) after it vowed to come back for him.

When they finally make it to Whitestone, they see it in the desecrated state that it is. Percy later gains their attention by pointing to seven corpses hung from the Sun Tree, each corpse dressed as a member of Vox Machina, showing them the Briarwoods were anticipating them. Though unsettled by this, the party had to move on as a resistance member called them over to hide with them as a zombie giant was heading their direction. When the resistance member notices Percy's de Rolo crest, she asks if he's another member of the resistance. The party assures her otherwise, but they share the same goal. Percy asks her to take them to keeper Yennen as she could be of great assistance.

They meet Yennen after she finishes a sermon. Yennen is surprised and grateful to see him again. Yennen takes them into a secret hideout, where she informs Percy that his friend Archibald Desnay has been captured and is being prepared for execution.

A few members of the party devise plans to get Archie out, but most of them don't go over well after putting them to the table, as Vax shoots them all down. So Vex devised one of her own. Percy, Vax, and Scanlan would break through the back door of where the prison cells were. The latter two repeatedly struggle to get the door open. A guard suddenly opens the door to empty a urine bucket, accidentally splashing the two with it. Vax kills him and they rush in.

They soon find Archie. After Vax frees him, Kerrion Stonefell shows up. A fight breaks out and the resistance fights against the guards, ending with the resistance's victory, although they did lose a few members. The party reconnects, but notice Percy was missing. Vax runs off to find him. Vax finds Percy after he killed Stonefell. Percy instinctively pointed the pepperbox at him. Vax asks him would do that and Percy rants about Stonefell's part in killing the entire de Rolo family, until Archie corrects him that Cassandra is still alive.

They return to Yennen's hideout. Vax chastises Percy for pointing the gun at him earlier, actually threatening to kill him if he did it again. As Percy explains the origin story of his pepperbox, Keyleth tried to put life back into the Sun tree, she accidentally starts a fire, prompting Vax to douse it. She gets scolded by Vex for nearly revealing where they were hiding before Vax broke it up. Later, the party run off on a rescue mission for Cassandra, while spying on Professor Anders when they find the building the two are located in. Scanlan suggests he lures the guards away from Anders' house.

Upon seeing a sign that Scanlan's solo mission was a success, the party runs to enter Anders' home. Vax checks to see if there is a trap first, but Grog dismisses the idea and impulsively bursts the door open, where guards were pointing bows at the party. Another fight breaks out and they kill all the guards. Percy runs off to confront Anders, which leads to a fight with animated suits of armor, something his friends show up to help him with.

After the armors are dispatched, Anders possessed Grog into attacking Percy, Keyleth, Vex, & Vax. This escalates when Vex tries to kill Anders to break the possession, but Anders possesses her, Keyleth, & Vax in the same manner. When it seems he has the upper hand, Percy eventually manages to shoot Anders' tongue out, restoring his friends' minds before killing Anders. His friends notice smoke rising from him a second time as this happened. After that, they reconnect with Scanlan outside, who warns them of a hoard of zombies heading their way.

They made a run for it to Archibald's hideout. They were not safe there for long however, as zombies burst through the door and attacked. They managed to slay the zombies, but Scanlan got bit. They eventually move out of the hideout, where they find a zombie giant heading their way. Unfortunately, Duke Vedmire showed up with two more giants, ordering them to kill Vox Machina. The party split up, not ready to fight them, before meeting back up at the Sun Tree. Vax confesses his love for Keyleth and she was about to kiss her until she recollected herself and chastised him for the time he chose in telling her this.

When things seemed hopeless, Pike returned, coolly greeting the party, much to Vax and the others' amazement. The fight got easier from there. When the zombie hoard finally lets up, Vox Machina, along with Cassandra hunt down the Briarwoods. They go through an underground dungeon on the way. A prisoner calls out to them asking to be freed in exchange for helping them find the Briarwoods. Vax began to pick the sell's lock, until Percy turns his pepperbox on the prisoner.

Physical Appearance[]

Vax is a tall half-elf with fair skin with long dark brown hair and hazel eyes. He wears a black cape topped with black fur, a grey tunic with three brown belts, and black trousers and boots.

Personality[]

Vax typically takes situations more seriously than his twin. But he's not above lowering himself to pranks. True to his skill as a rogue though, he uses deception to get past people.

Vax has a small level of self-loathing. He claimed he had been depressed before he mat Vox Machina. While not necessarily suicidal, he considered himself a lost wanderer and wanted to find what meaning his life could have. When Vex died in the underwater base, he gave his life to the Raven Queen so that his sister could be resurrected, which shows he cared for his sister's life and well-being over his own.
