Backstory[]

Velma had a troubled upbringing. Her father Dale Dinkley did not seem to approve of her and took more interest in raising his four sons while her anxious mother Angie would spend months at psychiatric institutions to recover from small breakdowns. Velma always felt as an outcast amongst other people, whether it was at home with her brothers whom she envied or at school where she had trouble with interaction and was apparently resented by students for her intelligence. She retreated into her mind to deal with these difficulties which became a source of concern for the school teachers who suggested to Velma's parents that she be sent to another school for gifted children. Although her mother protested as she wanted Velma to mix with the "average" children, her father saw a school for the gifted as one of the only ways Velma would survive her school years.

It was decided that she would be transferred to a very expensive and elite boarding school where Velma was ironically as much as an outcast there as she was before, except now she was among people that were around her own level of intelligence. The idea of being at school in company of other intellectuals like herself terrified Velma and she continued to remain reclusive until one day she met a girl named Madelyn Wu who became her very first friend. Madelyn was also an outcast with the same interests as Velma herself and together they would share many conversations about their favourite topics. As summer vacation came and went, Velma was actually eager to return to school so she could reunite with Madelyn and resume their discussions. However, she was shocked to discover that her friend had blossomed into a young woman during the summer and only wanted to talk about topics that irritated Velma, such as boys or meeting new people. The change caused something inside Velma to snap as she erupted in fury towards Madelyn and everyone else nearby, mocking their arrogance and how insignificant they all were to her. But Velma's frustration did nothing to hurt or generate any remorse from her classmates, who all roared out in laughter over her outburst.

Velma eventually found herself leaving school once again due to her social difficulties and decided to take up homeschooling instead, enrolling in distance-learning programs for a number of Ivy League universities. By the time Velma was seventeen, she had earned more than enough doctorates to accept a job at a research center located in the most desolate regions of the South Pole, far from the people that plagued her childhood. Despite her resentment toward society, Velma hoped that her efforts would be able to improve it so she could perhaps make her own life better. She worked by herself in a substation miles away from her colleagues in the main laboratory and spent four years researching alone until the isolation caused her to have a breakdown that had her sent to a psychiatric institution.

During her recovery, Velma received a surprise visit from her four brothers who had each excelled in their own fields of education to become big names in government and industry. They told her that the four of them had pooled their resources together to create secretive organisation dedicated to improving the state of the world in order to bring forth a new golden age. However, the brothers needed Velma's help to achieve their goal, acknowledging how they neglected her in the past and wanted to make amends by including her as part of their collective. Velma agreed to assist them and became chief scientist in a hidden facility known as The Complex where she worked hard to prove to her brothers that she can make their vision for the world a reality. She eventually came up with a project she called "Elysium" which would unleash trillions of nanites into the atmosphere in order have them remove humanity's negative traits and leave only the positives to create a utopian society.

Velma spent eighteen months on the project before she began spreading the nanites worldwide, but she later discovered that her brothers had altered her work so it also would make humanity highly submissive and easier to manipulate. Velma was outraged at her brothers and herself for letting this happen. She knew if tried to alert the authorities or press of the imminent danger her four brothers would quickly learn of it and prevent word from getting out. However, Velma knew of a hard-hitting journalist named Daphne Blake who chose to operate independent of big media stations and believed she would be able to inform the world before the Dinkley brothers notice the information leak.
