Vergil, later also known as Nelo Angelo as well as split halves V and Urizen, is the main antagonist of the Devil May Cry series by Capcom. He appears as one of the two main antagonists of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening (along with Arkham) as well as the main antagonist of Devil May Cry 5 and also appears as a playable character in Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition and Devil May Cry 4.

Vergil is the older son of the Dark Knight Sparda and is Dante's older twin brother. The twins rarely help out together especially when they're in battle.

He first appears in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening and appears playable in its special edition. He is also a playable character in Project X Zone 2 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

His Mo-cap is Hironobu Hagihara in Devil May Cry and Daniel Southworth for the remainder of his appearances.

In Japanese, he is voiced by Hiroaki Hirata in most of his appearances and by Shōhei Namba in Sengoku Basara vs. Devil May Cry.

In English, he is voiced by Jonathan Mallen in the original Devil May Cry when younger and by Daniel Southworth since Devil May Cry 3.

Biography

Past

Vergil was the son of the legendary demon knight known as Sparda, and a human woman named Eva, as well as being the older twin brother of Dante. Vergil and Dante were close since childhood and trained swordmanship by thier father, but living mostly with their mother. Some time before their 8th birthday, Vergil and Dante were each given half of the Perfect Amulet by their mother. Around the same time however, Sparda disappeared, leaving Eva to take care of their sons. When the twins turned eight years old, Vergil, Dante, and their mother were attacked by demons, who were sent by Mundus, the demon king of the Underworld and Sparda arch-nemesis, hoping to harm Sparda's loved ones for revenge. In the progress, Eva was killed by demons and the brothers were separated from each other, resulting in Dante believing that Vergil was dead. Because he failed to save his mother as well as witnessed his mother getting killed during the demonic assault, Vergil eventually became ruthless and power-hungry.

Investigating the Order of the Sword

As he got older, Vergil traveled the world, looking for information about his father. Eventually, Vergil visited the city of Fortuna, where he decided to investigate the local religious society of men and women known as the Order of the Sword. He discovered that the Order was worshipping his father like a god with great reverence. As he was pondering why these humans were worshipping his father who is a demon as a deity, a horde of Scarecrows ambushed him, but were quickly dispatched by Vergil with little to no effort. Shortly after killing the Scarecrows, Vergil then continued deeper into Fortuna, intending to learn more about the Order and what their intentions were.

Vergil continued his investigation, as he went to the Fortuna Castle, the lab hidden underneath the Fortuna Castle, and even the Mitis Forest, then finally the Orders’ headquarter.

Most of the boss fight are non-canon (however, it is unconfirmed):

• While he was traversing in the Mitis Forest, he came in contact with the demon; Echidna. Echidna proceeded to attack Vergil, but Vergil managed to escape.
• When reaching The Order’s Headquarters, he came across Sanctus, who was merging himself with The Savior. The two battled each other, with an unknown outcome, though Vergil, Sanctus, as well as The Savior managed to survive the fight.

After learning what the Order was planning, Vergil made his way back to the city of Fortuna. He began to ponder on whether or not one can call the people misguided for worshipping Sparda, a mere demon. As he walks away, Vergil vows that one day the Order will know the true power of the son of Sparda.

Legacy

Some time after Nelo Angelo's defeat, his remains were used by the Order of the Sword to create the Bianco and Alto Angelos, alongside Vergil’s signature weapon Yamato had been retrieved there. Eventually, Vergil’s Yamato reacts when Nero’s presences is approached. It was during Nero’s encounter, Dante finally confirms that Nero is Vergil’s son, but want to keep it secret from him for a time being on not to involve with his conflict against Vergil. The Order uses Yamato for their own selfish gain, using the Hell Gate to summon and kill demons, proclaiming themselves as gods, until Dante manage to retrieve it and return it to its current heir, Nero.

Resurrection

Several years after the events of Devil May Cry 4, Vergil was able to escape the Demon World as well as rid himself of Mundus's influence over him; however, his body was weakened and crumbling from battle after battle. He eventually confronted Nero and, despite his weakened condition, was able to easily remove his Devil Bringer arm completely, as well as regain Yamato, leaving Nero bleeding and unconscious.

Having regained his sword, Vergil then returned to his family's burned mansion. Fueled by his desire to defeat his twin brother Dante along with his pursuit of power, Vergil then stabbed himself with Yamato in order to separate his human half from his demon half as well as gain power without having to be hindered by human thought or emotion. This in turn sparked the birth of "V" and "Urizen".

After Urizen was defeated by Dante, a dying V approached him and commented on how he and Urizen are one in the same before he impaled Urizen with his cane, which in turn merged the two halves together once again and in the process, restored Vergil. Vergil then easily overpowered Dante, before telling him to recover from his wounds and get stronger in order for them to settle their score, then left but not before he thanked Nero. At the high top of the tree, Vergil laments on how things would have turned out if he and Dante's positions were switched, but nonetheless, he sat there and patiently waited for Dante for their last battle.

Dante eventually arrived and demanded that Vergil hand over Yamato to him to seal the portal to the demon world, but Vergil said that if he wanted it then he will have to take it from him. The Sons of Sparda soon fight each other, but are evenly matched. Before the two could deal the killing blow, their fight is abruptly stopped by Nero, who was now in his true Devil Trigger, and proclaimed that the sibling rivalry between Dante and Vergil must end as he cannot allow either of them to die. Vergil, however, challenges his son to a fight over this proclamation and after a long and arduous battle, Nero defeats Vergil who was quite impressed with how much stronger Nero had gotten.

Vergil, being stubborn, says that he still has more than enough strength to fight, but agrees that the portal must be closed by severing the roots of the tree, though mainly because it will interfere with their "business". Both he and his brother then make their way towards the Demon World in order to cut down the tree and close the portal behind them, but not before he gives Nero "V's" book as a memento from him until he comes back. In the Demon World, Dante and Vergil approach the base of the tree only to be surrounded by demons whom they soundly defeat. Eventually, the tree is completely destroyed with the portal closing behind thus sealing Dante and Vergil in the Demon World. A few weeks later, the brothers are seen sparring with each other while also bickering on who won their last few matches, thereby rekindling their relationship as true brothers. As the two begin another sparring match, they are interrupted by a hoard of demons whom they quickly make work of. Vergil tells Dante not to say his catchphrase, which Dante does anyway, much to his annoyance.

Personality

In contrast to his twin brother Dante's boisterous, outgoing, and extroverted personality, Vergil is calm, cool, collected, and introverted, constantly maintaining an aura of fearlessness. Vergil cares little for the well-being of those around him, and is unflinching in his pursuit of power; however, in spite of his cold and ruthlessness demeanor, he is an honorable warrior who maintains his own set of morals and disciplines. Virgil despises fighting dirty and cheap tactics and refuses to use firearms, deeming them unworthy of a "true warrior" while staying true to only his blade as well as other melee weapons he managed to obtain from defeated enemies. His code of honor still surfaces while he is corrupted as Nelo Angelo: he refuses to attack Dante from behind and waits until both are outside to begin their first fight. In Devil May Cry 5, after being restored and was attacked by his brother, Vergil refused to fight Dante when the latter was injured and tired from his last fight against Urizen, saying that defeating him in such a state has no meaning and gave his brother time to heal his wounds and get strong.

In dire situations, he is not above actions that would seem desperate or those that would contradict his views. As seen in Devil May Cry 5, he took Nero's Devil Bringer and the Yamato by force, still bearing influences of his time as Nelo Angelo. If Dante's fighting something he's also opposing, he'll team up, even though he has reservations. He won't hesitate to take drastic measures such as punishing traitors too.

Unlike Dante, Vergil is willing to embrace his demonic heritage, and seeks to emulate his father's power and cold persona. While Dante seeks to protect humanity from the demons, Vergil wants more demonic power, regardless of the consequences for those around him. Despite his normal personality of cold dismissal, he does cherish certain things - the Devil-blade Yamato, a dark katana left to him as a keepsake by his father, his own half of the Perfect Amulet, a keepsake from his mother and, after his own realization, his own son Nero. In Devil May Cry 3, Vergil seems to reveal some of his feelings by claiming to Dante: "Might controls everything, and without strength you cannot protect anything, let alone yourself.". This may be a reference to their mother's death. It may also imply that Vergil seeks power as compensation for failing to protect her. His failure may also have made him forsake close human relationships, due to his perceived fragility of humanity.

V is the human side of Vergil, and he is able to see his past without the coldness and uncaring eyes of Vergil himself. This is his human manifestation that he has kept suppressed all his life to attain his goals of power. V describes Vergil as "One who lost everything", and that all the defeat he suffered only caused him to sink lower. V recognizes the gravity of crimes he committed and how important the things he threw away in the endless pursuit of power really were, such as his humanity, younger brother, and his own son. V originally went to Dante in the hope that he could right the wrong that Vergil created with the birth of Urizen. V explained to Nero that "he", meaning Vergil, only wanted to be protected and loved, but since he was alone his only option was to survive. It is obvious some mannerisms of V manifest in Vergil after reemerging, prominently his humanity.

As Nelo Angelo, Vergil only depends on fighting battles to finish the work. While also becoming fully demonic, he will only make dark chuckles instead of commenting on his foes' own efforts to beat him. As addition to his boosted demonic abilities, his mind is slim and any form of memories (which also includes the half of the Perfect Amulet that Dante had) will cause his mental state to be stimulated with scarred ones.

Powers and Abilities

• Supernatural Powers: Inherited from Sparda, Vergil has similar powers to his biological twin brother Dante. It is believed that Dante’s immense supernatural powers comes not just from his demonic blood, but due to his will to never be weak again and protect the ones he cares about. He implies when he is speaking with Dante, that without power you cannot protect anything, let alone yourself. This may mean demons can reach their full potential by having the ability to protect and care for another, but this may only be for his brother Dante and his biological son Nero due to their being part human as well as part demon. Even before devouring the Qliphoth tree, after seperated his human side, Vergil's demon side Urizen outclassed both Mundus and Argosax, easily overpowering Dante with little to no efforts. After devouring the fruit of the Qliphoth tree, Urizen merged with V, Vergil returned, more powerful than ever, able to fight awakened Dante on equal terms. So far he has shown;
  • Supernatural Strength: Vergil has incredible superhuman strength, due to his demonic heritage. He possesses supernatural strength to the point where he can punch through stone with little effort and overpower demons much larger than him without much difficulty. Even in a severely weakened state, he was able to tear off Nero's nigh-invulnerable demonic arm to regain Yamato.
  • Supernatural Mobility: His superhuman speed is so great that he can move faster than the eye can see and his agility is at a superhuman level, allowing him to perform feats such as running so fast that he appears to be teleporting. This was seen when in Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition's opening, how he instantly dashes from one opponent to the other. His agility was seen seen he sliced up Beowulf's head into four pieces In Devil May Cry 3. His reflexes are also similarly enhanced as well. He is able to combat dante in terms of reflexes as well.
  • Supernatural Stamina: Even after he was extremely tired by battling Dante, he was able to regenerate his vitality and stamina within a few minutes after Arkham tossed him. After gaining moe power via the Qlipoth Fruit, Vergil's stamina was enhanced tot he point where he and Dante fought each other for weeks in Hell without tiring, or slowing down for long.
  • Supernatural Durability: While not bulletproof, his physical constitution can withstand high levels of physical trauma. Even after being extremely tired by fighting Dante, when Jester overpowered him and attacked him, Vergil showed no signs of fatigue or injury.
  • Regenerative Healing Factor: Due to his demonic heritage, Vergil possess an astonishing regenerative healing factor. His regenerative abilities are seen while he is fighting Dante for the second time. Even after Jester caused a massive amounts of physical trauma to him, he was able to recover and go just in time for the final battles. Even after Dante dealed a fatal blow to him during their final battle, he was still limbering and not dead.
  • Immortality: Due to his demonic heritage, he is immune to the passage of time. It has even been revealed that he is still alive, severely weakened, and trying to get over his trauma of his servitude of Mundus by splitting his human and demon halves with the Yamato.
  • Supernatural Senses: He is able to sense oncoming attacks from miles away. His enemies always have an extremely hard time evading him or even sneaking up on him.
  • Devil Trigger: Vergil’s half-demon nature allows him to release his demonic powers fully through his Devil Trigger, which increases his speed and increases the potency of his healing factor and even grants him several new abilities. After eating the Qlipoth fruit and regaining his human and demon halves back, he gained Sin Devil Trigger, which is far more powerful than his original devil trigger.
  • Demonic Magic: Vergil is already the son of an extremely powerful ascended demon. As such he possess a great deal of demonic mystical energies. Vergil can channel his demon energies into objects, such as his weapons or even the air itself. He uses these energies to create his Summoned Swords as long range weapons, which are energy swords resembling the Force Edge.
• Supreme Combatant: The half-demon has also used a number of demon fighting styles, emphasizing mastery of Devil-Arms and their elemental powers. He uses a demonic fighting style known as Dark Slayer style, which lets him teleport & utilize a lot of dark force energy inside Yamato mixed with his skills.
  • Swordsmanship: Vergil is a master swordsman with extreme and incredible skill, talent, precision, accuracy and technique. He's a master of Iaido (or Iaijutsu due to their great similarity). Iaido is a Japanese martial art that emphasizes being aware and capable of quickly drawing the sword and responding to a sudden attack (a quick yet precised counter-attack) then sheathing the sword immediately. His opponents often not realizing they're dead until he sheathes Yamato. His sword fighting skills and feats are considered to be "legendary" and even leading many people to believe they're superior to Dante's or on par with him at least. Combined with his Superhuman strength and speed Vergil is nearly-unmatched in a swordfight perhaps only surpassed by his father, Sparda.
  • Hand-to-Hand Combat / Martial Arts: Due to the nature of series (which its primary fighting weapons are swords) Vergil is not shown frequently in fist fights or utilizing unarmed forms of martial arts. However while using Beowulf as a melee weapon for combat, Vergil demonstrated some of his proficiency and skills on martial arts (those demonstrations may be a small part of his skillset), using multiple forms and techniques of punches, spinning kicks, roundhouse kicks, back hand punches, knee strikes and counter attacks which many of these belongs to (but not limited to) : Boxing, Taekwondo, Karate, Kickboxing, Muay Thai and Krav Maga (Remember he uses such techniques which strongly resembles these mentioned martial arts techniques and he necessarily doesn't need to possess master-level skills or/and being familiar with these forms) thus proving he's a master of a large number of fighting and martial techniques/style. Interestingly enough his movesets with Beowulf are smaller than Dante's however they're far more efficent and powerful. Even stranger the reason behind this has never been explained.

Devil Arms

His primary weapons are Yamato, Force Edge & the Summoned Swords. He wields a katana called Yamato that he inherited from his father, which is a Devil Arm, a weapon made from demonic power. He later gained another Devil Arm, Beowulf, named after the demon he gained it from. It was a set of gauntlets and greaves with light powers, but Vergil lost these after falling into a void, and they were claimed by Dante. Beowulf also gave him a different Devil Trigger, a fact that is true for most Devil Arms.

Project X Zone 2

Vergil appears as a playable character in Project X Zone 2 with his brother Dante as his partner, the former who replaces Demitri Maximoff as Dante's partner from the original and his partner now being Morrigan Aensland.

Trivia

• Vergil is named after Publius Vergilius Maro, a famous Roman poet of the Augustan period. In the Divine Comedy, the namesake of Vergil's brother, Dante, makes Publius his guide to hell.
• Vergil is the first Devil May Cry boss to have a playable role in the games. He is also the most recurring boss character in the series, with six total boss battles.
• Vergil is voiced in Japanese by Hiroaki Hirata, also known for the voice of Caliburn the Sword and Refrain.
  • Vergil is voiced in English by Daniel Southworth, who previously played Eric Myers, the Quantum Ranger in Power Rangers Time Force.
• Vergil's outfit is a costume for Stylish Alastor in Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble for the PSP.
• Vergil appears as a playable character in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. If the player completes the Arcade Mode with Vergil, his ending has him defeating Wolverine to claim his Muramasa Blade, and declaring that both his and the sword's soul cry out for more power.
• His other name, Nelo Angelo, is a misspelling of Nero Angelo, Italian for Dark Angel. In UMVC3, this is the name of his Level 3 Hyper Combo.
  • However, this Hyper Combo can only be used when the Hyper Combo Gauge is at three, four or five levels, when Vergil has his Devil Trigger activated and when the attack hits his opponent.
