Verso is the deuteragonist in the 2025 French RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He is a mysterious young man that Maelle and her friends encounter, following the death of Gustave. He later reveals himself to be a former member of Expedition Zero under the command of Renoir, having set out 100 years ago to find survivors from the Fracture, before eventually going off on his own for reasons unknown.
It is then revealed that he is a painted replica of Verso Dessendre, the late son of the Dessendre family, who had been created by Aline, out of grief over losing her son from the real world. Learning the true nature of himself has caused him to rebel against his "family", in hopes of finding a way to put an end to his existence for good.
He is voiced by Slimane Yefsah in French and by Ben Starr in English.
Personality[]
Verso initially introduces himself as an enigmatic individual that the Expedition 33 crew are hesitant to trust, but eventually come to accept him, as his goal aligns with theirs, that being to defeat the Paintress. As he has lived over 100 years, he is the most knowledgeable and experienced expeditioner that is currently alive. Witnessing the deaths of many expeditions and burying them has left him become very numb to the experience, making it easy for him to come to terms with losing his allies.
Though he tends to come off as brooding at times, he does have a bit of a comical side to him and tries to find ways to lighten everyone's spirits, forming close bonds with them. He is most notably close to Esquie and Monoco, the latter he shares a humourous rivalry with as the two often share their exchanges in duel to prove who's stronger. While he grows fond his new companions, the one he appears to form the closest relationship with is Maelle, doing everything he can to help support her in her journey and find the time to talk with her in private.
Once it's revealed that he is a painted recreation of Aline's son, his true motives become clearer, in which he secretly detests his very own existence, knowing full well that he was created in response to Aline's grief over the death of his son. He is one of the few people in the Canvas that is fully aware of his true nature and because of this, he is more than willing to exploit the griefs of his allies and use them to his advantage of achieving his goal, while keeping secrets to himself.
Despite this, however, he does genuinely care about his friends and family, and is deeply saddened whenever he loses them. He loves Aline as if she was his real mother, grieving over having to send her out of the Canvas and later expressing concern at her ill state. While his relationship with his father, Renoir, remains strained, the two still care for one another and prefer not to kill each other, though the circumstances of their situation forces them to be enemies. And while he tries to make her see that he is not the Verso that she grew up with, he loves Maelle the same way that he loves his sister, Alicia, and ultimately wants her to live in a world where she doesn't have to suffer anymore.
