~ Verso's last words to Alicia as he burns in the fire.

Verso Dessendre is the overarching protagonist in the 2025 French RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He was the late son of Renoir and Aline, who had passed away in a fire when attempting to save his younger sister, Alicia. He was originally a painter during his childhood and created the Canvas, bringing life to various characters such as the Gestrals and Grandis, before leaving it behind, in favor of pursuing his passion for music as a pianist.

His death would serve as the catalyst of the Dessendre family, driving the family into pure grief. Aline would use his Canvas to create her own version of the family as a means of escaping from the harsh reality of his death, while Renoir would try to find ways to force her out of it, in order to come to terms with Verso's death.

He is voiced by Slimane Yefsah in the French version and by Ben Starr in the English version of the game.

Personality[]

While little is known about Verso was personally like, he seemed to genuinely love his family and was the one that kept them whole together. His father was fond of his presence, as he knew how to make him laugh, while his mother doted on him a lot, acknowledging his artistic talent and keeping his paintings up on the wall.

Both his sisters also think of him well and miss him very dearly, Alicia in particular feeling deep regret over his death and wishing she could have spend more time with him. Clea in particular was considered to be his best friend and was deeply hurt when he felt that she outgrew him overtime.

While he had a unique talent as a painter as a child, Verso outgrew his interest for painting and instead became more interested in pursuing his passion for music, particularly seeking to play the piano. Nonetheless, he still thinks fondly of his paintings he made during his childhood, with it even being implied that he had a balance between being a pacifist and a thrill seeker, as he created the Gestrals and Grandis to represent as such, yet the two managed to live in harmony in his Canvas.

Though he ultimately seemed to be a good person at heart, it is implied through his father's creation, Visages, that Verso was not always honest about himself and that he never truly expressed how he felt, instead lying to himself and to others to keep things going. It isn't until his painted self meets the last piece of his soul in the Canvas and asks him about how he truly feels about painting, in which Verso tells him that he is in fact tired of painting, wishing to be put to rest for good.
