Biography[]
Vicki was a teenage girl from the 25th century. She and her father were travelling to the planet Astra when their ship crashed on the planet Dido. After they contacted the natives, Vicki stayed behind when the rest of the ship's crew went to meet them only to hear an explosion. When she recovered, an injured crewmember, Bennett, told her the natives had killed the rest of the crew. A bullying native, Koquillion, promised the pair protection if they obeyed him.
Vicki detected the TARDIS' arrival on the planet and rescued an injured Barbara Wright after an encounter with Koquillion. She was unable to stop Barbara killing her pet Sand Beast, mistakenly believing the creature was killing her. Despite this, Vicki instantly trusted the Doctor when he and Ian joined them. The Doctor revealed that Bennett had been responsible for the deaths of her father and the others, along with most of the natives, and had been posing as Koquillion. With no-one else left, Vicki accepted an offer to travel with the Doctor and his friends in the TARDIS, hoping for adventure.
Vicki's first trip was to Roman times, where she joined the Doctor in visiting the court of Emperor Nero and witnessing the beginning of the Great Fire of Rome. Further adventures followed with Vicki being held prisoner by the Animus alongside the Doctor, and posing as the Doctor's page boy when they encountered King Richard the Lionheart during the Crusades. Visiting the planet Xeros, which was occupied by the Moroks, Vicki played a key role in helping the Xeron rebels overthrow their oppressors, by reprogramming the computers of the Morok armoury to allow them access to weapons.
Vicki had her first encounter with the Daleks when they pursued the TARDIS crew through space in their own time machine. When the Daleks were destroyed during an encounter with the Mechanoids, Ian and Barbara chose to use their time machine to travel home. Vicki and the Doctor were apparently left alone in the TARDIS but quickly learned astronaut Steven Taylor, a former prisoner of the Mechanoids, had stumbled on board. During their first journey together to 1066, Vicki spent some time trying to educate Steven on the reality of time travel.
When the TARDIS arrived on a soon to disintegrate planet and the travellers became caught up in a conflict between the Drahvins and Rills, Vicki was the first one to learn the Drahvins had lied to them and the Rills were peaceful. Her last voyage in the TARDIS was to the Trojan War, where she ended up as a guest of King Priam in the city of Troy, given the name Cressida. She began to develop feelings for Prince Troilus and, having learned from Steven that the Doctor had given the Greeks the idea for the Trojan Horse, managed to convince Troilus to leave the city before the Greeks attacked, saving his life. Unwilling to let him believe she had betrayed him, she made sure the Doctor and Steven were safe in the TARDIS before joining Troilus outside the city, pledging to stay with him.
In the short story "Apocrypha Bipedium", Vicki and Troilus later encountered the Eighth Doctor, together with Charley Pollard and a young William Shakespeare. In the short video The Storyteller Vicki lived a long life, gaining a family and retelling her adventures to future generations.
Trivia[]
- Vicki was never given a surname in the series. The tie-in novel Byzantium! first gave her surname as Pallister, over 35 years after her time on the show.
