Victoria Waterfield is a supporting protagonist in Season 4 and the tritagonist of Season 5 in the Classic series of Doctor Who.
She was portrayed by the late Deborah Watling, who also voiced the character for Big Finish.
Biography[]
Victoria was born in England in the 19th century. Her mother died when she was young and her father, Edward, was a scientist. He and Victoria went to live with the wealthy Theodore Maxtible, who collaborated with Waterfield in an attempt to build a time machine. Instead, they accidentally summoned the Daleks to Earth. With the help of the greedy Maxtible, the Daleks took Victoria hostage to force her father to travel through time and abduct the Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon. Ultimately, they were all transported to the Dalek planet Skaro, where the Daleks attempted to turn all humans mentally into Daleks. The Doctor managed to instigate a civil war between two Dalek factions but Edward Waterfield was killed in the crossfire, leaving Victoria in the care of the Doctor and Jamie.
Travelling with her new friends in the TARDIS, Victoria soon found herself visiting the tomb of the Cybermen on Telos. Although she allowed herself to be drugged by the treacherous Kaftan, she managed to disable a Cybermat and help free her friends who had been sealed inside the tombs. On her next trip to Det-Set Monastery, she was possessed by the Great Intelligence for a time, although the Doctor later taught her a mantra to protect herself. On a visit to Earth in the future, she was held prisoner by the Ice Warriors but did manage to help the Doctor disable their second-in-command Zondal.
On 21st century Earth, Victoria joined Jamie in infiltrating the entourage of the would-be dictator Salamander, who resembled the Doctor, with Victoria taking on the role of a kitchen hand. She would encounter the Great Intelligence again in the London Underground, again being held hostage by its Yeti as part of its plan to drain the Doctor's mind.
By now, the constant danger was taking its toll on Victoria. Facing the new threat of the Weed Creature, she began openly voicing her unhappiness with the Doctor's lifestyle. Although her screams caused the sound vibrations needed to destroy the creature, she was unable to bring herself to leave with the Doctor and Jamie. Instead, the Doctor entrusted her to gas refinery assistant controller Harris and his wife Maggie and they said a sad farewell. Victoria settled on Earth in the 20th century.
The straight-to-video drama Downtime saw Victoria return to Det-Set and again fall under the influence of the Great Intelligence. She set up a university, mistakenly believing she was bringing enlightenment, when in fact she was being tricked into tracking down the model Yeti needed to bring the Intelligence back. Initially at odds with the Brigadier and Sarah Jane Smith, she ended up helping to destroy the university's mainframe in which the Intelligence was housed, expelling it again.
