Vietnam is a supporting character of the Hetalia: Axis Powers series.
She is one of the oldest characters in Asia, known as a country who has a best history and called "headstrong". Vietnam is the second Asian female country, and along with Thailand, are the first Southeast Asian countries to appear in the series. She has not been officially given a human name yet but fans has given her a popular one, Trần Chung Liên. She is now a communist and socialist country. She is also Taiwan's best friend.
Appearance[]
Vietnam wears a green áo dài, white pants, the Vietnamese traditional clothes and holding a wooden boat paddle. She has golden eyes and long dark brown hair which is tied in a low ponytail with string red bow. Himaruya later includes a nón lá in chapter 376. In World☆Stars, she wears a white navy uniform.
Personality[]
Vietnam is rated as a "headstrong" woman by Himaruya because of having many strong Vietnamese women in Vietnam's history and solidarity, patriotism, and national self-respect of the Vietnamese people. She is a country with many national ethnic, owned many ethnic different costumes. However, she is sometimes a bit shy upon seeing how Taiwan looked her. That said, in Christmas 2011, when holding girls' meeting in her house, she doesn't act so shy when talking in front of Western girls. Vietnam is hardly good at smiling and has to ask Thailand how to smile. Additionally, she tends to get dangerous when drunk.
In chapter 376 of World☆Stars, she is told to be an energetic nation with lots of pride, values tradition and honor. Prefers coffee to tea and she adds a lot of condensed milk to it to make it bittersweet. She doesn't believe to things like "the middle person in a three-person photo will be unlucky" but she still doesn't want to stand in the middle. She is also not really interested in taking photos. She is also rather discreet as shown in Halloween 2013 when Taiwan made her a dress for her to wear for joining Halloween but Vietnam felt shy with it.
Himaruya tells that Vietnam has a natural skillfulness and she uses it to create a variety of different things, and Austria mentiones to special order cinnamon from her in a chapter.
In the Hetalia☆Collezione profile, Philippines comments that she is a tough person and her simple way of dressing is considered adorable. She is also described as an older sister who guides the inexperienced ones, as well as being correct and serious, but also easily be influenced by others. When a meeting is held anywhere, even a coffee shop, she still dresses formally and politely, and ties her hair neatly. Vietnam is also described as having many ways to make other stiff members laugh. Finally, she is described as being shy and embarrassed every time she goes for taking photo and is worried after her unsatisfactory results, but she sometimes doesn't need to worry too much because Taiwan, her best friend, will edit what Vietnam wants.

It is unknown what Vietnam's previous life was like but Himaruya had implied that Vietnam could have a relationship with the Trưng sisters, Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị in history. Moreover, in Axis Powers, it was known Vietnam is Taiwan's friend played together during this time, so they were surely to be part of Japanese Empire or Japan.
In the Hetalia☆Collezione profile of Vietnam, Himaruya mentioned that she is a older sister and seems the word "older sister" means Vietnam is the oldest countries in Southeast Asia and one of the oldest in Asia.
Vietnam first appears in Volume 4 of Ilha Formosa ~Beautiful Island~ in Hetalia: Axis Powers, where Taiwan asks to take a picture with her and she reluctantly agrees. However, she later discovers that Taiwan has retouched the photos and is shocked at how she looked.
In episode 17 of Comic Birz, Taiwan invites Vietnam to a meeting about voice actors in people's favorite anime.
In Halloween 2011, Vietnam joins America's costume contest as the TOPIO robot and wins. Later in Halloween 2013, Taiwan made her a costume with a dress that is too short, much to Vietnam's embarrassment.
Vietnam later appears frequently in World☆Stars during the arc of ASEAN nations.
Anime[]
Vietnam makes a cameo in The World Twinkle episode "Surprise Halloween!" as the winner of America's Halloween contest in the TOPIO costume, though the anime doesn't identify it as her. She also makes another cameo in the first episode of World☆Stars, sitting next to Hungary in the world confederence.
Trivia[]
- A sketch named Asia3, drawn in May 2013, was later revealed to be an alternate draft of Vietnam, but many fans claimed that it must be Philippines or Indonesia.
- In the manga, Vietnam appeared to be taller than Taiwan. However, in the Hetalia☆Collezione profile, Taiwan is taller than her 2 cm, implying that either Taiwan grows between her appearances or it is simply a retcon.
- Vietnam hadn't been given her a birthday by Himaruya, but fans gives her one, that being September 2nd, the Independence Day of Vietnam.
- Vietnam is likely bisexual.
