~ Vivian |
Vivian is a major character in Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door.
She was a member of the Shadow Sirens (known as The Three Shadows in the remake) who was abused by the others, especially her oldest sister Beldam, so she eventually got fed up with the abuse and joined Mario to defeat Doopliss after he showed her kindness. She then joined Mario permanently, helping out Mario along the way and eventually defeating the Shadow Queen.
Personality[]
Due to the years of abuse and bullying by her sisters, Vivian became a timid and shy figure, constantly in fear of Beldam yelling at her. However, once she joined Mario, Vivian started losing her fear of others, to the point that she was eventually able to confront her sisters without fear. However, Vivian still generally acts shy towards others.
Biography[]
Vivian was first seen alongside her sisters after Mario gets the first Crystal Star when they were summoned by Sir Grodus in the X-Naut's fortress on the Moon and he commanded them to intercept Mario in the Boggly Woods and take the map he was using to look for the Crystal Stars since he knew he would likely go looking for the one there next. When they arrive, Vivian finds a beautiful-looking necklace lying on the ground, which is later revealed to belong to Madame Flurrie. However, while they're on the lookout for Mario, Beldam inquires if she has the sketch that they're using to identify Mario, but Vivian responds that she was never given the sketch. Beldam, however, quickly gets angry and blames her for losing it, then decides to punish her by confiscating the necklace she found. Later on, however, Beldam finds the sketch, which she misplaced, but she still refuses to accept any responsibility and insists that he must be Vivian's fault. A little later, Mario and his partners pass along since they're helping Flurrie look for her necklace, and having the sketch in hand, the Shadow Sirens now recognize Mario and challenge him to a fight. However, they are defeated and leave behind the necklace, allowing Mario to return it to Flurrie.
A little while later in the game after Mario has retrieved 3 of the Crystal Stars, Grodus sends them to intercept Mario again. This time, they go to Twilight Town, where they plan to ambush and defeat with with a powerful weapon called a Superbombomb. However, similarly to the sketch, Beldam misplaces it and much to Vivian's dismay, Beldam blames her for this too, verbally chews her out and forces her to go searching for it while she and Marilyn rest at the local inn. Later on, Mario returns from the Creepy Steeple after fighting Doopliss, but despite seemingly defeating him, Doopliss ends up stealing his body and identity just as Mario beat him in battle, leaving him as just a shadow, while Doopliss goes about showboating and being adored by the local town's populace. Despite his predicament, when Mario spots Vivian searching for the Superbombomb, he decides to help her out. He quickly helps her find it, but then she discovers it's broken, which causes her to laments how she's probably meant to be punished for life. However, Mario tells her to cheer up, which Vivian appreciates, but when she asks for Mario's name, he can't say it due to it being stolen. After telling her his situation, Vivian is shocked, but also touched that he's helping her despite dealing with far worse problems than her. Therefore, she decides to help him get his name, identity and body back.
After this, Vivian helps Mario in battle against any enemies he encounters and can user her Veil technique to hide from and avoid them as well. First, they travel back to Creepy Steeple where after some they find a room where there's a parrot. While the parrot won't say much while they're in plain sight, when they hide using Vivian's Veil technique, he laments about how Doopliss treats him. After discovering his name, they go back to Twilight Town where they confront Doopliss since up until that point, he would challenge Mario every time he enters and leaves Twilight Town and ask him if he could correctly guess his name since that would break his curse on him, which he arrogantly believes he'll never figure out. Plus, even if Mario does know his name, the letter p is missing in the menu, which prevents it from being spelled out in full. However, during their visit to Creepy Steeple, Mario and Vivian also managed to find the missing letter in a chest in the same room as the parrot. After Mario correctly guess his name this time, Doopliss reacts in shock and panic, then quickly retreats back to the steeple.
After they chase him back to the steeple and confront him, Doopliss, still being in Mario's body, rallies Mario's other partners/allies (Goombella, Koops and Madame Flurrie) to fight against them since somehow, he's fooled them all into believing he's really Mario despite his very different attitude and personality. This causes Vivian to realize that Mario was the one she was helping the whole time, and she feels like a fool since he's the very person she was sent to intercept and defeat. Therefore, she initially leaves Mario to fight Doopliss and his other partners on his own. However, after a couple of turns, Vivian has a change of heart and decides to come back to help Mario since upon recollection, he showed her much more kindness than anyone else ever had, especially compared to her own sisters. After working together and concentrating their attacks on Doopliss, they manage to defeat him and chase him away for good, which allows Mario to finally get his name, identity and body back. This causes his other allies/partners to realize their mistake and apologize to Mario. However, they also question why he teamed up with a Shadow Siren. Vivian initially gets worried that she'll be rejected, but Mario stands up for her, causing Vivian to once again be grateful to him, and from this point onwards, she joins his party for good for the rest of the game.
How active Vivian is in the plot beyond that point depends on how much she is used, but a couple of notable points are that she seems to form a friendship of sorts with Goombella, one of the other female members of Mario's party, and she also gradually develops an apparent crush on Mario. However, at the end of the game when Mario is leaving Rogueport, she chooses not to confess her feelings and instead comments on how he and Princess Peach will make a nice couple since she wants him to be happy.
According to Goombella’s email to Mario, Vivian now lives in Twilight Town and is revealed to be on much better terms with her older sisters, who have both redeemed themselves.
Other Media[]
Super Smash Bros.[]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
Vivian first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as an sticker that increases the user's energy attacks.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Vivian appears as an advanced-ranked primary shield-type spirit that decreases the user's weight. Her spirit battle is against an invisible Mr. Game and Watch on the battlefield form of the Luigi's mansion.
Powers and Abilities[]
Outside of battle, Vivian can use the Veil technique to sink into the shadows with Mario to avoid enemies and obstacles. In battle, Vivian's default ability, in addition to Veil, is Shade Fist, where she can punch enemies and set them on fire.
After she's leveled up, Vivian gains the abilities Fiery Jinx and Infatuate. Fiery Jinx allows her to burn all enemies on screen, while her Infatuate ability confuses enemies, causing them to attack one another, instead of Mario and his party.

Trivia[]
- Although Vivian is depicted as a cis female in the English and German releases of The Thousand Year Door, other versions depict Vivian as a transgender woman or possibly a cross-dressing male. However, in the remake on Nintendo Switch, it is implied Vivian is transgender internationally due to changes made in some of the game's dialogue.
- Vivian, along with Ms. Mowz and Admiral Bobbery, are the only members of Mario's party who were not tricked by Doopliss into attacking Mario.
- However, this is due to Ms. Mowz and Bobbery not having joined the party yet. In Vivian's case, it was because she joined Mario's side when Doopliss stole his identity and ultimately stayed with him since he always treated her with kindness when no one else would.
- Even in the original game, Vivian has displayed more animated emotions than any other character in the game, such as showing happiness, sadness, and fear. In the remake, she has additional animations such as surprise and anger.
- Vivian is often considered a fan favorite in the Paper Mario franchise as a whole. This is mostly due to the fact that she's regarded as one of, if not most the strongest member in Mario's party, as well as her personal conflict regarding Beldam's abuse over her identity in the Japanese versions and remake of The Thousand Year Door.
