I'll tell you something, life looks different from down here. From this chair. Back when I was standing tall I never bothered to notice all the people living on their knees, all the people whose lives are melancholy little tunes. Those are the ones I'm fighting for.
~ Waldo

Waldo is a major character in the AMC series Into the Badlands.

He is the former Regent of Baron Quinn, and was once the mentor to Sunny who trained him to become the most skilled Clipper in the Badlands. Following the loss of his legs, he gained a new perspective on the people who are suffering in the Badlands, and eventually joins forces with the Widow to help aid in her mission to end the oppressive systems that the Badlands are built on.

He was portrayed by Stephen Lang, who also played Norman Nordstrom in the Don't Breathe films and voiced Elias Walker in the video game Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Personality[]

During his time as Quinn's Regent, he was incredibly ruthless and carried out murders without remorse. He passed this onto Sunny, who many times describes Waldo as being heartless. However, after losing his legs Waldo gains a different perspective on life, as he is essentially tossed aside by Quinn despite how much he did for him. He begins to notice the people who have been oppressed their entire lives, who he himself admits he never even bothered to notice when he was Regent. Furthermore, his care for Sunny surpassed even his old ruthless behavior, taking him in and personally training him so he may survive in the Badlands. Once Sunny makes it clear he wants to escape, Waldo gifts him a token that was given to him by the River King and could possible guarantee Sunny safe passage out of the Badlands. Even after joining the Widow, Waldo still looks out for Sunny and wants him to succeed in his quest against Quinn.

Waldo's motivation to eventually betray Quinn and fully join the Widow is that the loss of his legs made him finally see how broken the system of the Badlands was, and he saw the Widow's desire to end the Cog slave trade as the best way to achieve change. That being said, Waldo still recognized the danger that the Widow could pose as she was effectively trying to take over the entire Badlands and thus could easily become a tyrant. Waldo ends up growing close with Tilda, the Widow's adoptive daughter, and takes her under his wing in the same way he did to Sunny long ago. He even helps Tilda to escape whenever she ends up abandoning the Widow due to her becoming power hungry. Betraying Tilda ends up being over the line for Waldo, and he ends up abandoning her altogether and disappearing into the Outlands due to no longer being willing to work for her, believing she cared more about her own power rather than fixing the Badlands.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: Waldo was once the most skilled Clipper in the Armadillo Territory, leading to Baron Quinn giving him the position of Regent. Following his injury, he was still capable of combat, using both his cane and a chain attached to his wheelchair in order to defend himself during the attack on the Conclave.
  • Mentorship: Waldo was an extremely effective mentor when it came to training new Clippers, being responsible for training Sunny and turning him into the most skilled and dangerous Clipper in the Badlands.
  • Leadership: Waldo was considered to be a highly capable leader during his time as Regent for Baron Quinn, to the point that the Widow at one point offered to make him a Baron.
  • Intuition: Following the loss of his legs, Waldo acquired a new skill, that being an intuition as to who is approaching him based only on their footsteps.
