He wore the standard Survey Corps uniform and green cloak, with a white shirt underneath.
Personality[]
Walen appeared to be understandably fearful and panicked during the self-sacrificing charge against the Beast Titan, which he reluctantly participated in. Yet behind all his fear, he still had a brave heart, as he continued to charge forward after most of his comrades were already killed.
Story[]
Past[]
Walen X. Schartzen was born on March 9th somewhere within Wall Rose. In the year 847, Walen would become a member of the 104th Training Corps.
If Walen was from the southern branch, he would also be forced participate in the Battle of Trost District, in the year 850.
Walen would after his graduation, join the Garrison Regiment.
Return to Shiganshina arc[]
Two months later, when the Royal Government was overthrown, and the Military became the main governmental force of the people within the Walls. A large shift began to happen in regard to the Survey Corps’ reputation. With many Garrison recruits deciding to transfer to the Survey Corps. Walen was one of those soldiers, joining the Survey Corps.
A short time after his change in branch. Walen would before dawn, depart on horseback with the other Survey Corps soldiers. Going from Trost District to Wall Maria, to venture towards Shiganshina and reclaim the lost land.
After reaching Shiganshina, Eren Yeager reaches the outer gate and seals it with his Titan, but before they can accomplish the rest of their plan, the Armored and Beast Titan appear, along with a large wave of Pure Titans who transform near the outer gate inside Wall Maria. The Beast Titan launches a large boulder towards Walen and the other recruits, which falls into the inner gate. Intentionally trapping the horses inside Wall Maria. The Beast Titan then slams down its fist, causing numerous of the smaller Titans to begin running towards the horses. Walen and his fellow recruits are ordered by Klaus to transport the horses to a safer location. Klaus’ Team, Marlene’s Team, and Dirk’s Team would continue eliminating most of the Titans, but out of nowhere, multiple rocks begin flying at high speed to the soldiers, completely destroying some buildings and kills numerous Survey Corps soldiers. The Beast Titan has started crushing rocks in its hand and then threw it at them at supersonic speed. As it continues throwing numerous volleys of rocks. All the senior Survey Corps soldiers fighting around the inner gate were all killed, except for Captain Levi Ackerman.
Levi returns to Walen and his comrades, ordering them to take the horses closer towards the Wall. Erwin goes up to Levi and the recruits, with him explaining that the only soldiers still alive at the inner gate within the Walls are the recruits, Levi, and himself. This realization together with the constant bombardment of rocks, causes all the recruits including Walen, to start yelling and cowering in fear.
The Beast Titan continues with throwing volleys of rocks at Walen and his comrades, but the nearby buildings in front of them help with giving the soldiers temporary shelter. During this meantime, Erwin comes up with a plan for Levi to take down the Beast Titan, only do Erwin and the recruits have to sacrifice their lives. Erwin orders all the recruits to line up. He tells them that they will commence a suicide charge against the Beast Titan in order to act as a distraction, with Erwin himself leading said charge. Levi can then sneak up on the Beast Titan by following the line of Titans next to it.
In the manga, Walen can be seen standing behind Marlowe Freudenberg, being noticeably terrified like everyone else. Yet he aversely decides to go along with the plan after hearing Erwin’s motivational speech regarding the Survey Corps’ everlasting obligation to continue their legacy. Walen departs, being closely located to Marlowe, Floch and Sandra. Erwin orders them all to start shooting their signal flares, hoping that it can hinder the Beast Titan’s accuracy somewhat. The first volley comes in and takes down numerous soldiers, including Commander Erwin. But Marlowe shouts at everyone to continue moving forward,
Walen and his comrades proceed with the charge. The Beast Titan throws it’s second volley of rocks, completely wiping the majority of the recruits, with Marlowe also being killed. But Walen and three other remaining soldiers continue with the charge. Walen fearfully shouts at his comrades to shoot their flares, but the Beast Titan’s wielder annoyingly insults their attempts, claiming that it has no purpose whatsoever. He then angrily throws the third volley of rocks at Wallen and his comrades while they are still frighteningly, yet daringly, shouting towards the Titan. The volley of rocks proceeds to completely shred Walen and his fellow comrades to pieces, with the Beast Titan claiming them to be, “poor things”.
