The Wanderer, also known as Hat Guy and formerly known as Kunikuzushi, Shouki no Kami, the Kabukimono, Scaramouche, the Sixth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, and The Balladeer, is a major character in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact.
The Wanderer was once the sixth member of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers until he betrayed them after he took the Electro Gnosis and severed all ties within the Fatui.
He is voiced by Lu Yin (who also voiced Aether) in Chinese, Patrick Pedraza in English, Min Seung-woo in Korean, and Tetsuya Kakihara in Japanese. Kakihara also voiced Natsu Dragneel in Fairy Tail, Prompto Argentum in Final Fantasy XV, and Asaba Harumasa in Zenless Zone Zero.
Appearance[]
The Wanderer has blue eyes framed with red eyeliner, fair skin, and short midnight blue hair in ear-lenght, with wispy bangs falling over his eyes.
The Wanderer wears a wide conical blue kasa hat, with golden details with the top part resembling a lotus, with a pair of light cyan strips of fabric that dangles from the back of his hat, attached with a pair of diamond-shaped trinkets. Accessories resembling the finials of a shakujo staff hang from these strips of light cyan fabric. He sports a black sleeveless turtleneck bodysuit, and have a pair of fingerless long black opera gloves. Over his bodysuit he wears a white furisode kimono with long flowing sleeves in cyan color and an inner cyan tunic. He sports a pair of black metallic arm protections on each arm, having a bandage-like appearance, and a golden ornament attached to the turtleneck of his bodysuit, in the front.
Around his waist, the Wanderer wears a hakama-like black high waisted pleated shorts, narrow in the waist and loose in the legs, with a thick black and indigo obi belt holding it, decorated at the front with a large black bow with indigo tassels that dangle off it, their color paling at the ends. The Wanderer sports a pair of white gaiters, with a black toeless sock knee-high under it, using black geta sandals on his feet, with both legs secured around the top with indigo rope held together with a gold ornament with a singular tassel pinned to it. He wears a patterned blue half-cape with various tones that hangs off his left shoulder, where a large gold ornament containing his Anemo Vision is pinned along with a singular gold feather, which resembles the Plume of Luxury.
Personality[]
Before the events that shaped him, the Wanderer (formerly known as Scaramouche) was once a kind, polite, and innocent being. Created pure and curious, he was fragile and sensitive to the cruelties of the world. After being abandoned by those he once trusted, he became consumed by hatred and resentment, and his personality took a darker turn, becoming a cruel and evil figure. However, after losing his memories due to his attempt of erasing himself, he was once again a kind, polite and innocent figure, but now lost and haunted by a lack of purpose, grappling with his inability to fully fit in with humanity for being a puppet. After recovering his memories, he regain the misanthropic personality of his past self, Scaramouche, full of animosity towards everyone, always being aloof and hostile. He still very arrogant due to his divine nature, driving him to treat almost everything with contempt and disdain.
He adopts a pragmatic and pessimistic attitude, often showing distaste for Nahida's attempts to heal him. Nonetheless, he ultimately complies with her guidance. Despite remaining distant and cynical toward others, the Wanderer grows more friendly and trusting toward Nahida—especially after she offers him genuine care following his defeat. A crucial moment in their partnership is when Nahida reveals the truth about his past: that Dottore orchestrated the disaster at Tatarasuna, murdered Niwa, and manipulated the Wanderer into believing he had been abandoned. Nahida’s persistence, kindness, and honesty successfully gain his trust, leading the Wanderer to reflect deeply and, after regaining his memories, choose to ally himself with her.
The Wanderer's empathy, though often buried under his cold and callous exterior, also extends to others like Mini Durin. After recognizing that both of them have been betrayed and that such experiences have deeply affected their outlooks, Wanderer, who is usually guarded and reluctant to show vulnerability, displays an unusual softness towards the child, Durin. Having once wished he had never been born due to his own despair, Wanderer expresses to Durin that this is not a wish anyone should make, offering him a rare moment of empathy and understanding. Both he and Durin share a past of having hurt others, but Wanderer encourages Durin to atone for his actions by helping those around the Broken Sea, though he is initially reluctant to join him. When Durin asks if Wanderer will help him, Wanderer grudgingly agrees after the Traveler gives him a disapproving look for not keeping his word.
Biography[]
Past incarnation[]
Return as the Wanderer[]
After his defeat as Shouki no Kami by the Traveler and Buer, recovering and learning that Dottore was responsible for the Tatarasuna incident, Scaramouche erases all information of his entire existence from Irminsul, hoping to change the past and give those in the past a second chance in life. His efforts however only led to Teyvat forgetting him and his history rather than directly changing any past event. Scaramouche becomes the Wanderer as a result, though his new life of wandering only made him crave a purpose.
However, he realises that removing himself from Irminsul would not change the events that happened beforehand, so Nahida used a back up of his memories that was once inside the Dendro Gnosis (the Akasha system) that the Sages had created to take control of Shouki no Kami from his immobile body as well as deserting the Fatui, giving them back to the Wanderer, forcing him into another loop where he has to fight his past identity of Shouki no Kami. Afterwards, the player is given the opportunity to name the Wanderer, and Nahida orders the Traveler to inform the true story about the fall of the Raiden Gokaden to Amenoma Tougou, among the last survivors of the Raiden Gokaden in the present.
Powers[]
- God-Like Physiology: Being an divine puppet and a gnosis vessel, created by the Raiden Shogun, he bears the natural physiological advantages of gods over mortals, although he is not necessarily a true god himself. His lineage strength countes himself sixth among the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, all legendary for their combative prowess.
- Immortality: A trait of his creator. Even having existed for centuries with powers sealed away, Wanderer still possesses the same outward youthful appearance that he had since his creation, and also, he is stated having indestructible body, and this resistance enabled him to survive much easily and for more time in the abyss than any other human being in the fatui, this also did him have a lot of mission involving explorations into the abyss attributed to him.
- Speed of Light: It's stated on Wanderer's "vision" that he could move fast as the lighting itself, when he blocked the attack of the Everlasting Lord.

Trivia[]
- Wanderer is the third playable Enemies to Note, after Childe and Raiden Shogun.
- He is the first Genshin Impact playable character whose special dish is of different Nation to Vision, (as an Inazuman in Sumeru), third for birthplace after Kaeya Alberich (post-Cataclysmic Khaenri'ahn in Mondstadt) and Thoma (Mondstadt-born paternal Inazuman and maternal Mondstadter).
- Wanderer is the first playable character who did not have his vision at the start of the game, with the second being Furina de Fontaine.
- Wanderer and his characterization make several references to the lyrics of the 1975 song Bohemian Rhapsody by the British rock band Queen.
- The opening lyrics "Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?" may be referenced in his discovery of a "gigantic hoax" surrounding the stars of Teyvat. (1.1)
- The lyrics "Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening me" likely reference his homeland of Inazuma and his mother Raiden Ei, both of which were associated with the Electro element.
- "Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?" directly references the name Scaramouche. Additionally, the musical theme played during the Balladeer's appearance in Inazuma was titled "Ominous Fandango."
- The demon Beelzebub, the namesake for Beelzebul, is mentioned several times throughout the song. Additionally, the lyrics frequently refer to a "mama" which may be interpreted as a reference to Beelzebul being hie creator.
- His playable version was announced on October 31, 2022, exactly 47 years after the release of Bohemian Rhapsody (October 31, 1975).
- The ending lyric of the song "Anyway, the wind blows..." is also the same title used in the Wanderer's Collected Miscellany video, referring to his Anemo Vision.
- A popular theory stipulated by fans that The Wanderer is the "false reincarnation" of Baal, the late older sister of Beelzebul, who attempted to revive her in the puppet's body but resulted in a failure. While it is unknown if Baal would reincarnate after death, some stated that Kamisato Ayaka is her "true reincarnation", as hinted by her similar fighting style that he never had.
- The Wanderer is also known by these aliases or titles (not including the player's own name for them):
- Hat Guy (by Nahida, Nilou, and various Vahumana scholars)
- Hero of Simulanka
- Hero of Prophecy
- Similarities between the Wanderer and Genshin Impact's main character, the Traveler:
- After completing the Inversion of Genesis Archon Quest, the Wanderer becomes the only playable character besides the Traveler whose name can be customized, making them the only two characters in Genshin Impact with this feature.
- Like the Traveler, the Wanderer has no listed affiliation in his character profile.
- The title "Wanderer" is a synonym for "Traveler," the main title associated with Genshin Impact’s protagonist.
- The Wanderer's constellation, Peregrinus, translates to "wanderer," "foreigner," "traveler," "pilgrim," or "outlander," reflecting themes that also resonate deeply with the Traveler's journey across Teyvat.
- Typically, only Archons have themselves as their constellations, with the exception of the Traveler and Wanderer, who also have themselves as their constellations. For the Traveler, the reason remains unknown, while for the Wanderer, it may stem from his previous ambition to attain divinity, leaving lingering traces of that divine aspiration.
- The Wanderer can fly using the power of his Anemo Vision. In contrast, the Traveler—who once had the ability to fly—lost this power after the Unknown God sealed them away. In a sense, their roles have reversed: the Wanderer now soars, while the Traveler walks.
- Both the Traveler and the Wanderer endure a profound sense of loss and disconnection from the world, shaping their identities and paths.
- The Traveler was sealed away for 500 years, trapped in a deep slumber haunted by nightmares. Upon awakening, they found themselves in a world changed beyond recognition, stripped of everything familiar.
Traveler’s Character Story 1:
"The god took your only kin away, and you were sealed and cast into a deep slumber filled with nightmares."
"When you reawakened, the world was changed."
"How long had you been asleep? You had no answers." - Similarly, the Wanderer experienced abandonment and prolonged isolation. His memories, locked away within him, became a metaphorical prison.
Wanderer’s Character Story 1:
"Any recollection must begin several hundred years ago, when the puppet that shed tears upon being born would not be given a name, but was instead only given a small golden feather as proof of his personage."
"He would be laid to rest within the Shakkei Pavilion, staring blankly at the beauteous scenery within. The flaming maple leaves, the exquisite window lattices... Within that lovely prison, he lost all perception."- Both characters were trapped in prolonged isolation, and the passage of time caused them to lose their sense of perception: The Traveler lost their connection to their former world, while Wanderer lost touch with reality. Despite being surrounded by beauty — the maple leaves for Wanderer and the transformed world for the Traveler — neither found peace or comfort upon awakening.
- The Traveler was sealed away for 500 years, trapped in a deep slumber haunted by nightmares. Upon awakening, they found themselves in a world changed beyond recognition, stripped of everything familiar.
- Both the Traveler and the Wanderer have contrasting tastes: the Traveler enjoys sweet foods and dislikes bitterness, whereas the Wanderer prefers bitter flavors and detests sweets.
- In the cutscene from Xianyun’s Story Quest, certain birds—also seen in the Wanderer’s official trailer and artwork—appear alongside the Traveler. These same birds are featured in Raiden Ei's and Yae Miko's idle animations.
- Both the Traveler and the Wanderer have similar cutscenes where they often reach out for someone or something important to them:
- Both characters have accumulated multiple titles throughout their journeys:
- The Wanderer is known as Kuronushi, Kunikuzushi, Kabukimono, the Balladeer, Shouki no Kami, Hero of Simulanka, Hero of Prophecy, and more.
- The Traveler has similarly earned many titles across Teyvat, including Honorary Knight, Visitor from Another World, Destined One, Captain of Swordfish II, First Sage of Buer, Fourth Descender, Yasnapati of the Pari, and others.
- At the conclusion of the Wanderer’s dialogue regarding Sethos, he remarks, "Hmph, somehow, everyone knows the name 'Hat Guy' now..." This, along with the events of Bedtime story (4.7 Archon Quest), suggests that both the Traveler and the Wanderer are often not recognized by their true names.
- The Traveler is the only one who calls the Wanderer by the name they personally chose for him. Similarly, the Traveler’s real name is known only to their sibling.
- Both the Wanderer and the Traveler have received nicknames based on their appearances: "Hat Guy" for the Wanderer and "Blond-haired Outlander" for the Traveler.
- Neither character particularly enjoys these appearance-based nicknames, but they tolerate them nonetheless.
- Paimon is aware of the Traveler’s real name, having heard by the Abyss sibling call the Traveler by their real name during the We Will Be Reunited Archon Quest. Despite this, Paimon continues to refer to them as "Traveler" (or the chosen player name).
- When the Traveler named the Wanderer, both Paimon and Nahida witnessed the event. However, instead of using the given name, Nahida affectionately dubbed him "Hat Guy," a nickname that quickly became widespread.
- Although many characters refer to Wanderer as "Hat Guy," most of them do not know his real name. As a result, the Traveler is the only character who knows Wanderer's true name, with the exceptions of Nahida and Paimon, who were present when the Traveler named him.
- The Wanderer wields a sword referred to as the "Hero's Sword" in Simulanka, while the Traveler wields the "Hero’s Blade" during the Narzissenkreuz Quest.
- Both the Wanderer and the Traveler have flying companions:
- The Traveler is accompanied by Paimon, while the Wanderer is joined by Mini Durin.
- Traveler and the Wanderer both rescued their respective companions.
- Both the Traveler and the Wanderer are outlanders from another world, working to save the world alongside their companions.
- The Traveler, as the hero of Teyvat, comes from another world, and similarly, Wanderer is the hero of Simulanka, also an outlander from another world. In Simulanka, the hero is an outsider, just as Wanderer, who is seen as a savior of that world.
- When the Traveler purifies Dvalin’s corrupted tear, it changes from red to blue. This parallels the Wanderer's calming of Durin in Simulanka, where the dragon’s red eyes similarly turn blue.
- The Traveler is capable of wielding multiple elements. Similarly, during his divine form as Shouki no Kami, the Wanderer wielded multiple elements—Cryo, Pyro, Anemo, Hydro, and Electro—excluding Geo.
- Despite Scaramouche's Shouki no Kami god form having no Geo Element, some of his attack animations, particularly "Triple Earth Shock," are very similar to the Traveler's Geo Elemental Burst.
- Aether’s Geo Burst animation involves slamming his arm into the ground, while Lumine stomps her foot onto the ground — both motions are mirrored in Shouki no Kami's moves.
- In the "Triple Earth Shock" attack, Shouki no Kami first stomps with his foot and then performs two powerful arm slams, resembling both Traveler animations combined.
- Despite Scaramouche's Shouki no Kami god form having no Geo Element, some of his attack animations, particularly "Triple Earth Shock," are very similar to the Traveler's Geo Elemental Burst.
- The Traveler and Wanderer's main theme colors, yellow and blue respectively, are complementary colors, directly opposing each other on the color wheel (RGB or CMY). This complementary color harmony visually reinforces their connection and contrast. Wanderer's previous design as the Fatui Harbinger Scaramouche featured red and purple tones, which also contrast strongly against the Traveler’s yellow, creating an intentional visual opposition.
- The Traveler's Anemo Skill Icon and the Wanderer's Burst Icon are very similar.
- Certain voice lines between Traveler and the Wanderer also parallel:
- Traveler (Dendro Elemental Burst): "Spring forth!"
- Wanderer (while sprinting): "Surge forth!"
- Similarities Specific to Lumine (Female Traveler)
- Both Lumine and the Wanderer possess feather-themed accessories: Lumine’s blue feather earrings and the Wanderer’s golden feather attached to his Vision.
- The flower worn by Lumine, the Inteyvat, is said to symbolize "a wanderer far from home," further connecting thematically to the Wanderer.
- Both are associated with flowers:
- Lumine with the Inteyvat Flower (seen in her hair and dress designs).
- The Wanderer with the lotus motif present on his hat.
- Both are associated with flowers:
- Their designs mirror each other with inverted colors for feathers and flowers: yellow for the Wanderer, blue for Lumine.
- Their outfits share overlapping color schemes (blue, gold, black, and white), but their hair and eye colors offer strong visual contrasts.
- Lumine (Geo Elemental Burst) and the Wanderer (Elemental Burst) share similar stepping animations in their idle movements.
- Similarities Specific to Aether (Male Traveler)
- Aether and Scaramouche share a notable similarity in their glove, the design also resembles the joints of puppets,—a subtle reference to the Wanderer’s nature as a puppet.
- Aether and the Wanderer share the same Chinese voice actor, Lu Yin . This may be intentional, as HoYoverse often assigns the same voice actors to characters who are meant to be parallels, variants, or counterparts of one another across their games. For example, Raiden Mei from Houkai Gakuen 2 and Honkai Impact 3rd, whose voice actresses (Miyuki Sawashiro in Japanese and Juhuahua in Chinese) are also shared with Raiden Ei.
