In another life, I would have really liked... just doing laundry... and taxes with you.
~ Waymond Wang's most famous quote
Please! Please! Can we... can we just stop fighting? I know you're all fighting because you're scared and confused. I'm confused too. All day... I don't know what the heck is going on. But somehow... this feels like it's all my fault. I don't know. The only thing I do know... is that we have to be kind. Please. Be kind... especially when we don't know what's going on.
~ Waymond Wang's most famous speech

Waymond Wang is the tritagonist of the 2022 critically-acclaimed science-fiction action comedy film, Everything Everywhere All at Once.

He is Evelyn's affable husband who co-owns the laundromat alongside her. He loves Evelyn deeply, but wants a divorce to force her to deal with their strained relationship. His Alphaverse counterpart is on the frontlines of the fight against Jobu Tupaki, and uses his Protagonistverse body to make contact with Evelyn.

He is portrayed by Ke Huy Quan who also portrayed Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Data Wang in The Goonies, Ouroboros in Loki, Han in Kung Fu Panda 4, and Marvin Gable in Love Hurts.

Personality[]

Waymond initially appears to be quite bumbling, with his goofy personality, inability to keep his finances in order, and apparent lack of competence in contrast to his Alpha self. This is deconstructed, however, in that the seemingly more composed and sensible Evelyn is revealed to be at least equally responsible for their tax trouble, and his capacity for kindness is critical for both keeping the family together and saving the entire multiverse. In general, he is exceedingly kind and affable. Additionally, Waymond loves Evelyn in every universe, no matter what, no matter who they both are. This is what finally snaps her out of her nihilist funk and shows her the path to victory: show everyone their best selves.

Story[]

The film centers around three people: Evelyn, her husband Waymond, and their daughter Joy. A circular mirror sets the first scene, reflecting back the family karaoking before microscoping us into their family home. The messiness of this home, with receipts and laundry bags everywhere, is one in which no stranger would be invited into. But this messiness is what lies beyond the "saving face" of Asian American families, including mine; in Evelyn's case, the family-run laundromat is failing, her husband is getting ready to serve divorce papers, and her lesbian daughter is silently suffering from trying to gain her acceptance.
