~ Whitestorm to Fireheart about the warrior code |
“ | If wishes were prey, we'd eat like lions come leaf-bare. But we'd die of boredom! You know that's not what the life of the Clans is like. The warrior code guides us through the dark times, the cold and the hunger. And the good times seem all the sweeter for it. Have faith, Bluestar. We'll survive. | „ |
~ Whitestorm reassuring Bluestar |
Whitestorm is a major character in the Warriors book series by Erin Hunter.
He was a ThunderClan senior warrior who served as an advisor to Fireheart after he became the clan’s deputy. He was then appointed by Firestar as his first deputy, before dying in the battle against BloodClan.
Whitestorm is one of Firestar’s closest friends and most loyal warriors and is respected by all his clanmates as someone wise and reliable.
History[]
Whitestorm was born as Whitekit to Snowfur and Thistleclaw, two ThunderClan warriors. While he was still in the nursery, his mother was run over by a monster (the way cats refer to cars in the Warriors series) and killed. Robinwing became his foster mother and Bluefur, Snowfur's sister, took care of him, all the while trying to keep him away from his aggressive father. Soon he recovered from his mourning and became a lively kitten, often causing trouble with his denmates Tigerkit, Brindlekit and Frostkit. He was then given his apprentice name Whitepaw with Patchpelt as his mentor and remained close to his aunt, before becoming a warrior under the name of Whitestorm.
As a warrior, Whitestorm was wise, loyal and brave and he was one of Bluestar's closest advisors. When Rusty joined ThunderClan, Whitestorm was already a senior warrior and a mentor to Sandpaw. He led the orange kittypet to ThunderClan's camp and took part in his training after he was named Firepaw. When Clawface kidnapped Frostfur's kits and brought them to ShadowClan's camp, a crime for which Yellowfang was accused, Whitestorm was the one leading a patrol to bring her back along with the kittens. On his way to the enemy camp, he crossed path with Firepaw and Graypaw who told him who was the real culprit and he agreed to help Yellowfang and the ShadowClan elders to overthrow Brokenstar. After their success, he promises that ThunderClan will respect a one-moon truce with ShadowClan to let them recover from Brokenstar's reign. Whitestorm later led the patrol that fought against RiverClan in the battle that took place on their land when Fireheart decided to cross it after bringing back WindClan to the forest territories.
After Tigerclaw's treason and banishment, he became Fireheart's closest advisor, helping the new deputy to face Tigerclaw's threat and Bluestar's mental breakdown as he was the cat she trusted the most. He spends more and more time at her side, feeling worried for her, but does his best to support Fireheart as he tries to hold ThunderClan together alone. Whitestorm also helps with Fireheart's apprentice and nephew Cloudpaw, scolding him when he disobeys orders and rules, and he reassures Fireheart when Cloudpaw is kidnapped by Twolegs.
Whitestorm remained a strong supporter of Fireheart, even though he was shocked to learn that the latter disobeyed Bluestar's orders to organize an encounter with Tallstar without consulting him beforehand. However he agreed that he didn't want to shed blood in vain. Later, Fireheart puts him in charge of guiding ThunderClan, and especially Bluestar, to Sunningrocks while the rest of the warriors led the dog pack to the gorges. When Bluestar escaped from his supervision and drowned after saving Fireheart from the dogs, he felt guilty and apologized to him. After Firestar received his nine lives, he named Whitestorm as his deputy, acknowledging his popularity and the fact that he always supported him. When Firestar decided to fight BloodClan, he privately expressed his worries to him, fearing that it might be ThunderClan's downfall if Scourge revealed himself to be too powerful. He also implied that he would die in the battle and shared his insecurities about his old age and his lack of ambition. Still he insisted on serving ThunderClan and Firestar until the end and took part in the fight against BloodClan where he was killed by Bone. On his deathbed, he told Firestar to follow his heart and to name Graystripe his new deputy as it was meant to be. He was later seen among StarClan warriors by Firestar when the latter lost his first life to Scourge.
Appearance[]
Whitestorm is a huge and muscular white tom with thick, snowy fur, fluffy ears and yellow eyes. One of his ears has a scar behind it.
Personality[]
Whitestorm is collected and full of wisdom, always keeping his temper and wondering deeply before taking any decision. He can be strict but prefers to be fair. He never looks down on anyone and acts friendly with most cats, even those who do not belong to ThunderClan as long as there is no need to fight them.
Whitestorm is very brave and loyal, always putting the needs of ThunderClan above all and respecting his superiors’ commands. He never hesitates to serve his clan, even if it means risking his life in battle or suffering from the cold or hunger. He is strongly attached to StarClan and the warrior code, and his belief in the warrior’s way of life leads him to remain optimistic even when it becomes hard to survive.
He seems to be close to his family. He looks fondly at Willowpelt when she announces to her clanmates that she is expecting their kits, he is very protective of his aunt Bluestar after she starts losing her mind, and he spends a lot of time checking on his daughter Sorrelkit after she is poisoned by Darkstripe.
Towards the end of his life, as his age begins to catch up with him, Whitestorm becomes more pessimistic and worried, feeling responsible for Bluestar’s demise and doubting his own ability to fight BloodClan. He fears that Firestar may be unable to beat Scourge and he admits that he has never had as much ambition as he has, and that he has never wished to lead ThunderClan. Although he considers his own death, his courage and loyalty to ThunderClan and Firestar still remain and he fights against BloodClan.
Relationships[]
Bluestar[]
Bluestar was Whitestorm’s aunt and maternal figure after the death of his mother Snowfur when he was still a kitten. She always encouraged him and promised to watch over him for her sister, whereas he saw Bluestar as a second mother to whom he would owe everything and in whom he would recognize Snowfur’s scent and mannerisms. Because of their close bond, Whitestorm was one of the first cats Bluestar turned to when she needed advice. At the end of Bluestar’s life, when she became paranoid after Tigerclaw’s betrayal, Whitestorm was the only cat she trusted (apart from Fireheart) and he spent a lot of his time checking on her mental state. He later felt terribly guilty for her death.
Snowfur and Thistleclaw[]
Whitestorm didn’t get to know his own mother very much but he loved her and was shattered by her death. As for his father, he was once close to him but Bluestar did her best to preserve him from Thistleclaw’s brutality, especially when she learned that the warrior was teaching his son combat moves while he was still a kitten. When Thistleclaw became Tigerpaw’s mentor, he had less time to spend with his son, which enabled the latter to grow closer to his aunt instead of him.
Tigerstar[]
Tigerstar had been Whitestorm’s denmate since their time in the nursery. As they were two single kits, they often played together despite their age gap and Tigerkit’s recklessness got the two of them in trouble several times. When they were given their apprentice names, they became rivals, often fighting to see who was the best warrior-to-be, probably because Whitepaw’s father, Thistleclaw, was the mentor chosen for Tigerpaw who was desperately in need of a father figure. As senior warriors, they shared prey quite often and seemed to respect each other. After Tigerclaw’s treason, Whitestorm considered him as an enemy and a threat to ThunderClan, showing how their friendship only lasted the time of their youth.
Brindleface[]
Brindleface was Whitestorm’s foster sister (along with Frostfur) and therefore one of his childhood’s friends with whom he played most of the time. She later became his mate, even though they were not seen together so much.
Willowpelt[]
Willowpelt was Whitestorm’s second mate and he seemed to be fond of her, looking proud of her expecting their kits.
Sorreltail[]
Sorreltail was Whitestorm’s only daughter from his litter with Willowpelt. After she was fed deathberries by Darkstripe, he spent a lot of time checking on her despite his duties as a deputy, showing how he cared for her.
Firestar[]
Whitestorm was Firestar’s first deputy and one of his closest advisors. The white tom always respected the young warrior in spite of his kittypet origins and he was among the first to recognize his new role as ThunderClan’s deputy, congratulating him and proposing to help him without any second thought. He was one of the first cats Fireheart turned to when he needed advice and even felt vexed when Fireheart took difficult decisions without asking for his support. The orange tom admired his nobility and wisdom and looked up to him, being confident enough to let him take care of important matters for the clan. Whitestorm even opened up to him about his insecurities concerning BloodClan and Firestar mourned him as he died in battle.
Trivia[]
