“ | Call me Woody... WiIiIiIiIiIiIiLd Woody!!! Golly, I- I know my name but, it seems that's all I know. | „ |
~ Wild Woody's well-remembered first lines to Low Man. |
Wild Woody is the titular main protagonist of the 1995 Sega CD video game of the same name. He was a ordinary pencil that was brought to life by Low Man of the Totem Pole to round up his Totem brothers who had escaped his control and created parallel universes, and in order to gather the scattered heads of the totem pole in order to save the world and save the universe.
He is voiced by Joe Kerska. Since his body movements were animated via Motion Capture, Donald Hom is who also portrays as him in the cutscenes.
Beginnings[]
A man brings a totem pole home with him, which turns out to have the power to destroy the universe, but only if many extremely specific conditions are met: it has to be the third Wednesday of July, there has to be a full moon, and there must be snow falling.
By coincidence, all of these things end up happening at once, causing the entire universe beyond the room to disappear and the totems to come to life. Each head enters a different picture within the room and turns it into their own personal universe, with the exception of Lowman, the lowermost head on the pole and the token good guy of the totem's heads.
To retrieve his evil brothers to prevent them from causing too much trouble, Lowman brings a pencil of all things to life that he named Wild Woody.
Role[]
“ | My good man, as of fifteen seconds ago; I was BORN to save the world! Where do I start? | „ |
~ Wild Woody to Low Man. |
Wild Woody serves as the game's titular protagonist; an rescuer of the Life-Saver type, who travels into several dimensions to retrieve and gather Low Mans' totem pole heads in order to restore peace and balance to the world.
In the games, however, he's a perpetually smiling, side-scrolling platformer who has the typically heroic thrill with defeating enemies he comes by, and exploring around the dimensions he jumps into so he can rescue the Totem Pole heads while having fun with the adventures he dives into.
Powers[]
“ | "See you in a jet, low boy! It's time to start SKETCHIIIN!... Yahooo!!" | „ |
~ Wild Woody, asserting his excitement to Low Man. |
Woody can erase enemies by jumping onto them and "rubbing one out", he can also use his butt as a eraser to erase certain walls and floors that impede his progress, which wipes them out of existence (which he seems to be A-Okay with doing). Woody is also capable of creating living beings on a whim from collectible sketches to destroy enemies or create any form of transportation through the levels by drawing something from the tip of his head.
Appearance[]
Woody is a tall, yellow N.2 sentient pencil with two cartoonishly bulging white eyes, a wide mouth with white teeth and four black limbs. Sporting with a pair of white gloves that his fingers stick out of and a pair of shoes.
Personality[]
“ | "'Ability' and Chance! Has got, NOTHIN to do with it, bright boy! And the name's not 'Pencil Neck'! It's Woody!! WIiIiIiIiIILD WOODY!!!" (Screams hysterically) | „ |
~ Wild Woody asserting himself to Tombstone by hamming it up. |
Woody is simply a well-intentioned nutcase. In the cutscenes, he's prone to lots of talking, yelling, spastic and energetic movements, sometimes having subtle mannerisms in his voice while generally shouting most of his lines as well as hamming it up, all with tons of enthusiasm with his noble intentions. On top of having a huge level of charisma, hysteria, and altruism, he has a playful sense of humor. He also likes to crack jokes every now and then, often fourth wall breaking, and tends to spout out lots of goofy one-liners on occasion.
His extroverted, sassy, silly and energetic personality traits just scream "charisma" in the similar veins of Jim Carrey's The Mask; this is due to his confidence, exuberance, optimism, highly exaggerated body language, and his loud way of speaking very enthusiastically and speaks with an assertive approach.
He seems to have a small case in Attention-deficit/hyperactivity personality disorder (and possibly a mild case of Histronic personality disorder). Which does explain why the way he behaves in overactive, overdramatic or impulsive manners, this would also explain his fidgeting, gesticulating, constant movement, showing lots of emotion and him talking very much. This would also explain the reason why he's abnormally (and easily) excitable or exuberant whenever he talks or tends to shout his name like it's a witty catchphrase for no reason.
He tends to think highly of himself, often spouting out his name in a needlessly loud and boisterous manner after he mentions a part of his name "Woody" and if a task calls for him, and he is also really obsessed with specifically yelling out his full name by forcing in the line "WIIIILD WOODY!" as if it's his catchphrase when he is called in for a task before performing any action (often for no reason but for his own enjoyment).
He can also sometimes be violent before he places the totem heads back on the totem pole like a madman, these include slamming a totem head onto the ground several times before throwing it onto the pole and then using a last totem head like a basketball before launching it to the totem pole as if it's a basketball hoop.
However, despite his heroic actions, he seems to show some level of perversion; as he feels okay with rubbing his butt, which is an eraser, onto anyone or anything, and one of his sketches he brought to life was a jolly mermaid with revealing cleavage (as well as wishing for a pink female paintbrush with cleavage in the cutscenes as his prize for saving the world and the universe).
Despite how manic, jaunty, perverted, goofy, eccentric, over-the-top, prideful and hammy he is, he proves himself to be very competent, dedicated, selfless, cooperative and helpful as the titular hero of the game. Where he, overall, did do a well enough job at saving the universe from Low Man's evil totem pole brothers in multiple dimensions, and he did this all in a rather cheerful and adventurous way, making him a honorable thrill-seeker.

Trivia[]
- Despite being a supposedly kid-friendly character, many things and implications about him are very adult-oriented, explicit, vuglar and sexually suggestive for a kids' game that was rated E (kids to adults), meaning that the game isn't as family-friendly as the rating claims.
- His very name, is a innuendo joke/euphemism for a penis and penile erections (Ex. To get a "woody", is a form of slang that defines this). The fact he's a pencil doesn't help the implication.
- Even though to "rub out" means to erase or to wipe off, the manual says Woody has to "rub one out", which is (usually) a vulgar term for masturbatating a male body part and ejaculating.
- One of his sketches he brought to life, a topless mermaid with hanging boobs can be unlocked from a convoluted hack of the game, which became infamous over the years upon discussion over the game. This was first brought up in SEGA's Tips and Tricks 100th Issue magazine as of 2003 (8 years later after the game was released).
- At the end of the game's cutscenes; Woody's wish for completing his mission in saving the universe was bringing a female pink paintbrush to life with a realistic, womanlike body with the topless cleavage being again uncensored. Woody's first reaction was getting a excited "horndog" expression, run up to it and wink at the camera upon the unnamed paintbrush making a cheery sound and giving a hug position.
- When Low Man praises Woody for retrieving the Totem heads, Woody says "Yeah, all I did was, bust a GUT!"; despite this quote being form of slang meaning "working very hard trying to achieve something" and "develop a pain in the side from laughing hard", this could also be misinterpreted for a pun based on ejaculation due to the game's adult-oriented aspects like Woody's very name as discussed above.
- He appears as a playable character in the game Shady Lewd Kart.
