Wilfred Mott is a supporting character in Series 4, the deuteragonist of the Christmas Special End of Time, and a minor character in the 2023 60th Anniversary Specials in Doctor Who.

Personality[]

Wilfred is very jolly and likeable, a skill he learnt during the war. He was a strong patriot and was loyal to England. He was a good friend of the Doctor, keeping his travels with Donna’s travels with him secret from her father. He was also very loyal in general, providing a good companion to the Doctor. He was willing to sacrifice himself to keep his friends alive, and was able to convince people very easily.

History[]

While underage he was willing to fight in the war, being disgusted by the Nazi camps - however, he was not willing to kill anyone, having not taken a life the entire time, which he was proud of. He was a private in the 6th airborne division of the British army.

At one point he married Eileen and had a child, Sylvia. He apparently never one shouted at Sylvia during her childhood, and would eventually have a great relationship with Sylvia’s child, Donna. In 2006 he voted for Harriet Jones to be prime minister. In 2007 he got spanish flu and could not attend Donna’s wedding. In 2008, as seen in Voyage of the Damned, he was the last person left in London as everyone else had fled to the countryside for Christmas, afraid they might have another alien attack. He shouted at the Titanic not to ruin the only Christmas Day without aliens invading. At this point he met the Doctor, and was quite friendly towards him.

He was an amateur astronomer and had a love for stargazing. One night he saw Donna wave at him from the Doctor’s TARDIS and felt happy for his granddaughter to be able to travel the universe, cheering for her. When Donna returned to Earth, Wilfred was the only person they told about ATMOS. He was locked inside an ATMOS car and began to suffocate but was freed by Sylvia. The next day Wilf promised to keep Donna’s secret and not tell her mother.

When Earth was moved into the Medusa Cascade, he and Sylvia tried to fight the Daleks, firing a paintball into the Dalek’s eyestalk. To his surprise, the Dalek disintegrated the paint, and attempted to exterminate him before being destroyed by Rose Tyler. They celebrated when the Earth was returned to its proper place, he and Sylvia celebrated. He was distraught when Donna had to return to her previous life due to her mind being wiped, and promised to look up at the stars every day on behalf of her.

On Christmas Day 2009, he had nightmares involving the Master laughing, and sought refuge in a church, where a mysterious woman told him a story about the Doctor. The next day, he and a group of other old age pensioners went off to find the Doctor, in which they succeeded. In a cafe, Wilf was informed of the Doctor being prophesied to die. He was warned by the same woman on the tv to take up arms so they Doctor could be saved. They next day he and the Doctor began work on fighting the master. In the following battle he freed someone from a radioactive booth, trapping himself in it, as he watched the Doctor defeat the Master and Rassilon. He knocked four times on the booth, accidentally fulfilling the prophecy, “he will knock four times”. The Doctor had to sacrifice himself to open the booth so that Wilf would not die of radioactivity.

At Donna’s second wedding, Wilf met the Doctor again, and was gifted a winning lottery ticket. Wilf and Sylvia gave Donna the ticket and Wilf tearfully saluted the Doctor as he took off.

2020s[]

Wilf had gotten too old to use the stairs and was now too weak to even walk. His family despaired at finding an affordable retirement home for him, but they lucked out in Kate Stewart was looking to repay Wilf for his helping in defeating the Master. Kate gave the cover that it was due to Wilf's past service earning him a good retirement; Sylvia knew the truth.

Meeting the Fourteenth Doctor[]

Alternate Timelines[]

In one alternate timeline, as seen in the comic Four Doctors, he was left in the booth and died of radiation. The Doctor of that world became the megalomaniac ruler of the universe.

In a universe where Donna turned left instead of right, as seen in Turn Left, he gained a winning raffle ticket and was out on the countryside when the Titanic crashed into london, causing a nuclear explosion. They had to move to Leeds, where they had to share a house with other families. He was upset when British citizens were deported to “labor camps” noting this had happened before.

Trivia[]

  • He is well known in the Doctor Who fandom for being one of the most quotable and loveable characters.
  • His actor, Bernard Cribbins, recently passed away, being remembered fondly.
  • Bernard Cribbins' failing health meant the role planned for him in Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle had to be reduced to one scene in Wild Blue Yonder. It was Cribbins' final role before his eventual death in July 2022, shortly after principal photography wrapped.Wilfred was portrayed by a stand-in The Giggle as Cribbins was unable to shoot the scene himself, with archival audio used for the character's one line. Following Cribbins' death, Russell T Davies briefly considered adding a scene to The Giggle where the Doctor alludes to Wilfred passing away off-screen. He was dissuaded by Phil Collinson, who convinced him to keep Wilfred alive "just off-camera".
    • The novel shows Wilf to still have his old energy, declaring "I'll never surrender to the mole!"
  • Before his role in modern Doctor Who as Wilfred Mott, he previously portrayed a human Police officer named Tom Campbell in the theatrical film Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. which was Bernard Cribbins very first Doctor Who related role.
