Hero Overview

Sometimes I feel like I'm just like a boat upon a winding river, twisting toward an endless black sea. Further and further; drifting away from where I want to be; who I want to be.
~ Wirt's poetry.
You don't want to help me. You just have some weird obsession with keeping this lantern lit. It's almost as if your soul is in the lantern.
~ Wirt discovering the Beast's weakness.
Are you?..
~ Wirt to The Beast as threatens to blow the Soul Lantern to threaten it’s weakness.

Wirt is the main protagonist of the 2014 animated television miniseries Over the Garden Wall. He is a teenage boy who is lost in the Unknown alongside Greg. Towards the end of the series, it's revealed that he and Greg are half-brothers and from the modern world.

He was voiced by Elijah Wood, who also portrayed Huckleberry Finn in the 1993 film adaptation of The Adventures of Huck Finn, Mark Evans in The Good Son, Stu Simmons in The War, Frodo Baggins from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jones Dillion in Try Seventeen/All I Want, Zak Knight in The Warrior of the Quest, Spyro in The Legend of Spyro 2006 version series, Mumble from Happy Feet, the title character in 9, Clint Hadson in Cooties in English.

Appearance[]

Wirt is a relatively short, thin boy with messy brown hair. He wears a red gnome hat, a navy blue cape with yellow buttons, a white shirt, and grey pants with suspenders. When he takes off the gnome hat, his hair sticks up and forms spikes. This outfit is later revealed to be a Halloween costume, and his daily outfit is an orange sweater over a white shirt and grey pants, which (excluding the sweater) are also used in his Halloween costume.

Personality[]

Wirt is a teenager who views the world in a serious way, unlike Greg. While he can come across as quieter and somewhat timid at times, Wirt can be very stubborn when others suggest things that he is opposed to and is capable of being sarcastic when he feels it’s called for. Despite this, he’s loyal to his friends (an example of this being Adelaide’s scissors, which he carried with him to eventually give to Beatrice.) At first, Wirt’s relationship with Greg appears to be more of a tolerance than a genuine bond, but throughout the series he grows to appreciate his half-brother’s optimism and humor. By the end of the series, he has matured significantly and taken responsibility for his own actions.

Biography[]

Wirt is a teenage boy who has a crush on his schoolmate Sara, and he made a tape to give to her on Halloween. He went to find Sara at the graveyard where she and her friends were hanging out, and his half-brother, Greg, tagged along. Because of Wirt's disliking towards his stepfather, he disliked Greg as well, although he was fairly tolerant of Greg’s antics until they started getting in the way. When Wirt was about to give his tape to Sara, he and Greg ended up running away instead, and when trying to avoid a train, the two fell into a lake and blacked out. When they woke up, they had entered the Unknown.

They would soon meet a talking bird named Beatrice, who, claiming she was “honor-bound” to Greg for saving her from a bush she was stuck in, directed them to the witch Adelaide to help them get home. Unbeknownst to Wirt and Greg, however, Adelaide actually enslaves children, and Beatrice has made a deal with her to turn in the brothers to be her servants in exchange for a pair of scissors that could turn Beatrice and her family back to humans. When Adelaide trapped the brothers, Beatrice managed to kill her by opening a window and letting in the fresh night air, melting her away. The brothers continued their journey, this time without Beatrice as Wirt lacks the full context of the situation and believes she betrayed them.

Upon learning that Wirt is about to have his soul claimed by the Beast, Greg let himself be claimed in his brother's place. When he woke up and saw that his brother was gone, Wirt went to search for him, once again aided by Beatrice. Wirt arrived right after a fight between the Woodsman and the Beast, and the latter tried to tempt Wirt to take the Woodsman's place as the new lantern-bearer to save Greg. However, Wirt realized that the lantern actually contained the Beast's soul, so he instead refused and rescued Greg, carrying him home. The Woodsman is then shown killing the Beast via blowing his soul out.

Wirt wakes up in a hospital, and is initially panicked before realizing that Greg is safe and busy telling their friends about their adventures in the Unknown. Wirt finally confesses his feelings to Sara, and she agrees to come over to his house to use his tape player.

Etymology[]

  • The name Wirt means "worthy, powerful, strong" in English and Anglo-Saxon.
  • The word wirt can be traced back to Proto-Germanic, in which it means "host." It also carries the connotation of "caretaker."

Trivia[]

  • Although he's older, Wirt is afraid of many things, and prefers to be by himself much of the time.
  • His secret passions are playing the clarinet and writing poetry.
  • In one of concept art Wirt's original name was Walter. This may be unintentional, but his name makes a pun out of the phrase 'Worry Wart', aptly capturing Wirt's disposition.
  • Wirt can play the bassoon quite well, as shown in "Lullaby in Frogland".
