James "Logan" Howlett, also known as Wolverine, is the titular deuteragonist of the 2024 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Deadpool & Wolverine. He is a variant of the original Wolverine from another universe who failed both his teammates, the X-Men, and their world - thus going into a depressive spiral as a result.
However, he was taken from his universe by Deadpool in the latter's attempt to replace his own reality's version, though the two were banished to the Void by Paradox's rogue faction of Time Variance Authority agents. The two Mutants formed an initially very uneasy alliance to try and escape the Void, which they did with the aid of the Resistance. Now together as best friends, the pair was able to stop Paradox's plan to destroy Deadpool's timeline and eliminate Cassandra Nova to save the entire Multiverse, eventually allowing Logan to come to better terms with his past mistakes and live peacefully in Wade Wilson's universe.
He is portrayed by Hugh Jackman, who also played the original Wolverine in the X-Men film series, Gabriel Van Helsing in the 2004 film of the same name, Charlie Kenton in Real Steel, Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, Keller Dover in Prisoners, P. T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman, and voiced Roddy St. James in Flushed Away, Memphis in Happy Feet, Bunnymund in Rise of the Guardians and Sir Lionel Frost in Missing Link.
Personality[]

~ Paradox explaining Wolverine’s reputation and past to Deadpool. |
Similar to many variants of Wolverine, he can be temperamental and highly reluctant to dedicate himself to a cause. A significant element of his reluctance is due to his longevity, with his 200 years of life including endless loss and pain making him unwilling to commit for fear of experiencing grief again.
Despite his obstinance, exceptionally compassionate people can sway his opinion, such as Professor Charles Xavier; even so, he merely half-heartedly joined the X-Men, which led to one of his greatest losses, as they were killed by anti-Mutant forces. Whenever unnaturally caused loss occurred, he falls into savage rage, hunting down and killing all who murdered his friends, yet his frenzy making him kill innocent people along the way. He felt self-loathing for failing to save the X-Men, and the bloodshed he caused in response enhanced this feeling, compelling him to spend his time drinking heavily to block out the pain.
Another factor that makes him avoid entering heroics is a negative ego, as he believed himself unworthy and incapable of actually being a hero like the X-Men. When Deadpool dragged him into his mission, his response was violence, although could be reasoned with, making him agree to a partnership, despite his doubts. If deception is revealed, Wolverine can be extremely scathing in reaction, which can result in further violence, since it felt like his true nature that he could easily fall back into. Regardless of his pessimism, he can display moments of optimism, such as being willing to extend mercy and compassion, if only on behalf of Xavier, who was a greatly inspiring figure even after his untimely death.
Regardless of his blunt demeanor, brutish/savage tendencies, harsh opinions, and negative outlooks, he is at heart a kind and heroic person, thus if given the chance, would quickly decide to gladly risk and sacrifice his life if it were to protect and save innocent and good people.

Background[]
James Howlett was born over 200 years before 2024 in Canada; due to being a mutant, he experienced persecution from the beginning and throughout his life. He had a brother, Victor Creed, who would become his archrival, Sabretooth, periodically battling over the decades. Before they became bitter enemies, they presumably enlisted in every major war across modern history.
As Wolverine, he was invited by Professor Charles Xavier to join his team of superhero mutants, the X-Men; Wolverine agreed, but would often be negligent in his duties due to his self-loathing and failure to believe in his heroic qualities that Xavier said that he had. While fighting villains in the team, he refused to wear the yellow super suit, despite the pleas from his teammates, especially the leader, Scott Summers.
As a coping mechanism for his centuries of pain, Wolverine would disappear to drink alcohol to dull the pain, before returning to the X-Manor to help the team again. However, after one such drinking binge, he returned to find that a militant anti-mutant group had sieged the Manor, and killed everyone in it. In his grief and rage, Wolverine hunted down and slaughtered the killers, however, became lost to bloodlust, so killed many who weren't guilty. This led to the world loathing the X-Men even more than before, which drove Wolverine into drinking even more; he would spend his days drifting from bar to bar, as anti-mutant sentiment spread, which would force him to move to the next liquor hole.
Another result of his grief was that he now wore the super suit that his team hoped he would wear, although kept it hidden beneath civilian clothes.
Deadpool & Wolverine[]
During his search for a new Logan to be his universe's replacement Anchor Being, Deadpool passed through a TemPad doorway into the bar in which Wolverine was drinking. Deadpool requested that he join him, and when he refused, then threatened him; in response, Wolverine drank a bottle of whiskey, but before the fight could start, he passed out from intoxication.
Deadpool stripped the civilian clothes to show Wolverine was wearing the super suit; he brought him back to the TVA section run by Paradox. Deadpool proclaimed that he had found a replacement Anchor Being, although Paradox dismissed that as ever being an option, while also declaring that he had found the worst Wolverine possible. When Deadpool argued that he was willing to discuss it with the hierarchy, he realized that Paradox's plans with the Time Ripper was unsanctioned. Before Deadpool could make a doorway to headquarters, Paradox used a Time Stick to prune him; Wolverine demanded to know where he sent his kidnapper, which Paradox retorted as the garbage heap, which he would and as Wolverine jumped at him, the mutant was similarly pruned before making contact.
Wolverine found Deadpool lying on the ground, and instead of complying to his request for aid, he attacked him out of anger for his banishment. The two brutally fight for some time, but Deadpool convinced him to stop by claiming that since the TVA could destroy realities with a Time Ripper, they could also have the power to undo the damage done to Wolverine's world. They are warned of a coming convoy by someone who appeared to be Steve Rogers. The convoy of salvaged vehicles stopped near the three; "Steve Rogers" then activated his flame powers, revealing he was actually Johnny Storm/The Human Torch. When the Torch began raining fire, it was all absorbed by Pyro, who continued to absorb the flames until Johnny was left without his powers, leaving him to painfully fall. Another member of the convoy was Sabretooth, who challenged Wolverine; after they dash past each other, it was revealed that Wolverine managed to decapitate his brother.
Pyro had Toad activate a powerful magnet, which pulled Wolverine towards it, squishing Deadpool between him and the magnet, which allowed the villains to tie them in strong cables and put them in the prisoner cage with Johnny. The duo asked for answers, thus Johnny informed them that they were in the Void, a realm beyond existence where troublesome or unwanted people, and dead worlds are discarded, with the people eventually serving as food for Alioth, the entity born from damaged realities that was harnessed by He Who Remains to win the Multiversal War. Johnny warned them about the leader of the villains, with Cassandra Nova being the primary danger in the Void due to her psychosis and godlike powers. Although, Johnny also said that there was a resistance made up of heroes, and he was a member of their group.
When they are brought into the skeletal Giant-Man fortress, Deadpool believed he saw Xavier, however, it was Cassandra Nova. She introduced herself as Xavier's twin sister, and she had tried to strangle Charles with her umbilical cord in the womb; she also explained that she was sent to the Void before she could walk, but had come to love the chaos and freedom she felt in the reality. Deadpool relayed a prolonged and insulting soliloquy that he claimed to be quoting from Johnny; while Nova seemed unoffended, she used her psychic powers to instantly skin Johnny, leaving his internal components to slop out on to the ground. When Wolverine tried to attack Nova, she buried him underground, and before Deadpool could do similarly, she phased her hand into his head to read his mind and memories. When Nova altered a memory, Deadpool called her out, which she retorted by saying that Vanessa was probably thinking the horrible thing that the alteration said; as she was distracted, Wolverine stabbed his claws into her back, while Deadpool stabbed her with a knife.
Despite seeming to best the lunatic, Nova revealed that her psychic powers could also allow her to regenerate from injuries. As Alioth approached, she nonchalantly noted that they will be the beast's food today; however, as Alioth caused mayhem with powerful gales, the distraction allowed Deadpool and Wolverine to use a pruned Sentinel's leg to fly far from the compound, crashing a safe distance from Nova and Alioth.
The duo make their way to a nearby diner; while Deadpool ate spam, Wolverine found the only available alcohol, which was rubbing alcohol, yet he drank it all the same. Deadpool playfully asked if he wanted to talk about the suit, but Wolverine rejected his questions. Deadpool offered his own past of failure, such as ending the relationship with Vanessa out of insecurity and failing to be accepted into the Avengers, although Wolverine merely spat a derisive remark about the team.
When walking through the Void, Deadpool revealed details about his world's Logan, who died a hero to save X-23, a girl that was essentially his daughter. Suddenly a hideous little dog approached, and was taken lovingly into Deadpool's arms. Another Deadpool approached, although he wore no mask and was handsome without scars, who identified as Nicepool. After discussing the dog, who was Mary Puppins AKA Dogpool, Nicepool mentioned that there were many Deadpool's in the Void, and he warned about the Deadpool Corps. When the duo requested transport, Nicepool took them to his Honda Odyssey, which was to Deadpool's disgust, but Wolverine accepted it as adequate for their needs. Deadpool reluctantly returned Dogpool to Nicepool.
As they were driving, Deadpool made an unintended confession, which Wolverine demanded that he repeat; the confession being that he doesn't actually know if the TVA can fix Wolverine's world. Wolverine furiously stopped the car; he gave an enraged and demeaning speech, condemning Deadpool and noting that he deserved his failures, and was like Nova said, unable to save a world, since he couldn't even save a relationship with a stripper. Hurt, Deadpool announced a fight, then struck Wolverine, who struck him back, before it escalated into a brutal bloody brawl in and around the car. By nightfall, they were both asleep, with Deadpool tied up in a seatbelt. While they were asleep, a mysterious figure drove them in their car to a new location.
Wolverine had awoken first, and had been chugging whiskey when Deadpool regained consciousness. They learn that they were in the safe haven of heroes that defied Nova, but all that were left were Elektra, Blade, and Gambit. When Deadpool asked if they have a Magneto, he was told that he had already been killed, but the final survivor was X-23, who preferred her real name of Laura, the child that Logan had sacrificed himself to ensure she had a future. Deadpool rallied the team to storm Nova's lair to make her take them home, but Wolverine dismissed the plan as pointless and suicide and went outdoors to drink alone.
When by the fire, Wolverine told the approaching Laura to leave, but she joined him on another seat. Laura revealed that Wolverine reminded her of her father, noting the similarities such as poor temper and alcoholism; however, she also noted that they were alike in that they were helpful to those in need. Laura explained that a lot of children got to live because of her Logan, while Wolverine countered that a lot of children didn't live because of him; Laura, however, explained that she was grateful for her father's sacrifice, and even now, appreciated the life she was allowed. Wolverine confessed the reason why he wore his super suit, revealing that one day he left, and anti-mutant militants stormed the X-Manor; while Laura said that she knew how it would end, he pleaded that she allow him to finish. Wolverine revealed that Cyclops and everyone on the team wanted him to wear the suit, but he never did because he felt it looked ridiculous and he feared doing so would reveal how he really needed them; he also noted how Xavier never gave up on trying to help him belong. Ultimately, they died when they needed him most, thus he wore the suit to honor his friends and remember his failure. Wolverine said that he was the wrong man for the job, but Laura noted that he always was, with the implication that he could save people regardless.
When the Legacies and Deadpool storm Nova's compound with the Honda Odyssey, Wolverine also emerged from the trunk, as he had been inspired by his variant's daughter. While they all battle the supervillain army, Deadpool and Wolverine work their way into Nova's headquarters. Nova admitted that she could have accepted their escape, but found their return unreasonable; she flung Deadpool so hard that he was knocked out, while Wolverine's attacks were merely redirected into his own body. Nova phased her fingers into Wolverine's head to read his mind; she communicated with him in a mental plane, offering sympathy for his lifetimes of agony. Wolverine revealed that he took revenge on those responsible for murdering the X-Men, but it solved nothing, and in his rage, he ended up killing innocent people, too, thereby desecrating Xavier's memory. Nova offered that she could silence his guilt, and allow him to be the savage animal she believed he wanted to be, however, he revealed that he was a distraction, since Laura had got Juggernaut's helmet to Deadpool, who planted it on Nova's head, nullifying her abilities.
Deadpool demanded that Nova help them get home, but she laughed, mocking them by clarifying that she could only do it with the helmet removed, but if they remove it, she would kill them painfully. They are interrupted by gunshots that hit Nova's torso, which were fired by Pyro, who exposed his duplicity, while also complaining about how tiring it had been dealing with her insanity, although he was knocked out by Wolverine. As she was bleeding to death, Wolverine brought up her brother, Charles, who wouldn't have abandoned her, and if he knew about her, he would do anything to bring her home; although, Nova argued that the Void was her home. Even so, Wolverine explained how he wanted to kill her, yet Xavier would always support mercy if possible, and since Xavier took a chance on Wolverine, he would in turn take a chance on her.
Despite Deadpool's doubts, Wolverine had him remove the helmet; with her powers restored, Nova healed her bullet wounds. Nova revealed that she had obtained a way to escape years ago when she found a wizard, whom she murdered and wore his skin for 4 days, before discarding it, but keeping his sling ring, thereby Deadpool realized she killed a variant of Dr. Strange. While being momentarily helpful by creating a portal to Deadpool's Earth, Nova made it a game by noting they had to race Alioth, as the gaseous monster was nearing; before Alioth crashed into the compound, Deadpool and Wolverine made it through the portal.
Detecting the arrival from the TVA outpost in Deadpool's street, Paradox rushed to intercept them, angrily chiding them for interfering with things that they don't understand. Before further confrontation, another portal opened, from which stepped Pyro, who warned Paradox, before Nova broke the mutant's neck. Nova conveyed that she learned from Pyro about the deal with Paradox, and was annoyed that Paradox would try to assassinate her. Nova phased her hand into Paradox's head, reading his mind and learning about the Time Ripper; she revealed her intent to use the machine to not destroy Deadpool's timeline like Paradox planned, but every single timeline, destroying all existence except the Void, which would make her a god of it. Nova psychic blasted Deadpool and Wolverine far down the street, while dragging away Paradox to learn more about the Time Ripper's logistics.
As the duo recover, they are greeted by the ugly Dogpool, shortly followed by Nicepool, who warned them of the approaching Deadpool Corps, the hundred strong appearing from the portal. Deadpool tried to reason with them by pointing out that they would all die if Nova destroyed reality, although he went on a tangent, criticizing the whole notion of multiverse stories, saying that only Wizard of Oz got it right, and everything after was a mistake. Despite his efforts, Ladypool and Cowboypool explain that they took a contract from Nova, and would always fulfill a contract. The Deadpool Corps fired upon them, with Deadpool using Nicepool as a human shield. Wolverine harshly criticized Deadpool for hiding behind his variant, making him suffer the damage; Deadpool dismissed it as fine, since Nicepool would shortly regenerate, however, Nicepool's confusion showed that he lacked the healing factor.
Even knowing Nicepool lacked a healing factor, Deadpool used him as a shield again to reach a donut cart, out of a claim that they were typically ERs. Although, Deadpool stopped still exposed, either ignorantly or intentionally allowing Nicepool to endure multiple more hits; while telling his kind self to believe in his recovery, Nicepool's head exploded. Wolverine casually made it to the donut cart, using Dogpool as a shield, since none of the Deadpool Corps were willing to risk the dog's safety. Wolverine chastised Deadpool for how he handled the Nicepool situation, but he decreed it, claiming that he would honor his variant by using his gold-plated Desert Eagles.
Deadpool and Wolverine emerge from cover; Wolverine pulled his cowl over, revealing that his costume was more comic-accurate than it already appeared. The two slash, kick, punch, and shoot their way through the Deadpools, leaving a bloody trail through the street, ending with a stylish dismount for Wolverine, whereas Deadpool fell on his face. When they wondered why Babypool was laughing at them, they realized that unlike Nicepool, the other Deadpools did have the extraordinary healing factors. Before battle could break out again, they are joined by Peter, Deadpool's friend and coworker, who had donned the spare suit. Violence was prevented as the Deadpools reveal that they each have a Peter, too, and are so thrilled at finding another Peter, they completely forsake their contract to hang out with him.
When Deadpool and Wolverine enter the TVA outpost, they found Paradox still alive and despondent about Nova gaining mastery over the Time Ripper, so he believed they were too late. Wolverine aimed his claws at Paradox to force him to think of a solution, which he achieved by explaining that the machine was powered by two power sources, one of matter and antimatter, but if a circuit were to be made below the machine, it would create a feedback loop that would overcharge it, causing it to explode; however, the person that became the circuit would be annihilated by the antimatter.
Deadpool and Wolverine pause outside the Time Ripper's power generation room. Wolverine revealed that he wished to be the sacrifice, as he had nothing left in any reality, but if he would finally become the hero that Xavier had believed he could. Wolverine told Deadpool to send his regards to his friends; just when Wolverine entered the chamber, Deadpool sucker-punched him with a fire extinguisher, slamming and locking the door, leaving Wolverine outside of the chamber. Wolverine demanded to know what he was doing, to which Deadpool answered that he was answering the need of his universe, although briefly delayed to tease Wolverine and due to his admitted fear.
As Nova's power combined with the Time Ripper, the stability of Deadpool's universe became unstable; while he grabbed wires from one power pillar, he couldn't reach the other, allowing Nova's plan to advance. However, Wolverine had successfully broken through the door, grabbed Deadpool's hand, and shoved his claws into the other pillar, completing the circuit, which also made his shirt explode. The collision of matter and antimatter caused them immense pain, but created the additional power that started to overload the machine, until it disintegrated, taking Nova with it.
A TVA squad led by Hunter B-15 arrived to inspect the unsanctioned use of a Time Ripper. Paradox attempted to feign innocence, as well as claiming that Deadpool and Wolverine were his friends that he sent to stop Nova. However, the Canadian duo reveal that they survived, frustrating Paradox as he ceased hiding his responsibility; Peter unintentionally interrupted by arriving, and having an intense attraction with B-15, to Paradox's disgust. Paradox condemned the TVA for failing to understand his vision, as he was escorted through an astral doorway to face consequences. Hunter B-15 was surprised by their survival, though Deadpool explained that one person would have died, but two with insane healing factors would only be hurt. From the clout of saving the multiverse, Deadpool requested that the TVA rescue their Legacy friends from the Void; he also asked that they fix Wolverine's home universe, but B-15 noted that changing the past would prevent Wolverine's rise to heroism that saved all reality, so it was a necessary series of events.
Deadpool and Wolverine eat shawarma, since the Avengers did at the end of their first adventure together. Dogpool appeared to Deadpool's delight. Wolverine bid farewell, replying to Deadpool's question of ever meeting again with a negative. Yet when Wolverine walked away, Deadpool called out to him, and invited him to meet his friends.
At a party to celebrate their triumph, Wade's friends in the universe are in attendance, as is Laura, who sat next to Wolverine; other Legacy survivors are possibly nearby or home. When Wade met Vanessa's eyes, Wolverine made him surrender Dogpool to him, so he won't be distracted and encouraged Wade to talk to Vanessa to finally reconcile their relationship.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Superhuman strength: Wolverine has demonstrated very impressive feats of immense strength, as he effortlessly lifted Deadpool in the air and even hurled him through concrete barriers, as well as hurling a minivan with just his own bare body with enough force to trigger its airbags and even send it backwards. Wolverine is also able to deform and break down a metal blast door with just his bare hands.
- Nigh-Invulnerability: Like his original counterpart, Wolverine's body is nearly indestructible. He can withstand the most extreme physical punishment, including bullets, explosions, and energy blasts, without sustaining any injury.
- Superhuman speed: Wolverine's running speed is higher than a peak human athlete, and he is able to move faster by running on all fours like his namesake animal.
- Superhuman agility: Wolverine can traverse any kind of landscape, engage in parkour, and jump much higher and longer than should be possible with his muscle mass.
- Superhuman stamina: Wolverine's musculature is considerably more efficient than that of normal humans and other mutants. As a result, his muscles produce practically no fatigue toxins during physical activity compared to those of humans and mutants. His virtually inexhaustible stamina enables him to exert himself at peak capacity for an undefined period of time without tiring at all, allowing him to fight Deadpool and other enemies for extended periods without tiring.
- Superhuman reflexes: Wolverine has demonstrated the ability to effortlessly dodge melee attacks at a greater rate of success than a normal human being.
- Enhanced senses: Like his original counterpart, Wolverine has heightened senses such as enhanced smell and hearing, allowing him to hear subtle sounds, and see the slightest shifts in enemy movement. His sense of smell is strong enough to detect even canned food from a vast distance.
- Regenerative Healing Factor: Like his original counterpart, Wolverine's rapid regeneration ability allows him to recover from any injury, including complete regeneration from a single cell. He can resurrect himself if necessary, making him functionally immortal.
- Longevity: Like his original counterpart, Wolverine does not age and can live indefinitely.
- Self-Sustenance: Wolverine does not need food, water, or air to survive.
- Contaminant Immunity: Wolverine is immune to poisons, toxins, and diseases.
- Retractable claws: Like his original counterpart, Wolverine has a pair of three, 12-inch, razor-sharp, retractable adamantium claws in each forearm which extend between each of his fingers' knuckles.
- Adamantium skeleton: Like his original counterpart, Wolverine's skeletal structure is coated in adamantium, one of the strongest metals, which allowed his bones even greater endurance than already granted by his superhuman abilities. The downside is that it prevented him from achieving his originally higher limit of speed due to the weight of the material.
Abilities[]
- Master combatant: Logan has many decades of experience in fighting, as he has overpowered and almost decapitated Deadpool, who served in the Special Forces, in their first fight in the void. Despite his aggression, Logan is able to strategize and even counter specific opponents, as he slashed Deadpool’s Desert Eagles in their first fight in the void and even retracted his claws to free himself from Deadpool’s swords and continue his assault. In their second fight, Logan has fought a much more serious Deadpool for many hours and there was no winner. Logan has also killed an alternate version of his brother as soon as they fought each other in the void.
- Master martial artist: Having years of combat experience, Wolverine is a master combatant; capable of fighting Deadpool on equal terms.
- Knife mastery: To be added
- Master acrobat: With his agility, Wolverine is able to fight in mid-air without any difficulty and even land devastating attacks, as seen with the raid on Nova's headquarters.
- Extreme Pain Endurance: He is highly resistant to pain due to his healing factor.

Trivia[]
- The appearance of Wolverine's suit in the film marks the first time he has been depicted with a design faithful to the comics in live-action, with the exception of full-length sleeves throughout the first half of the film.
- The reason for this change was because Hugh Jackman, who has dealt with skin cancer caused by sun exposure, could be more covered up to protect his health. The sleeves are eventually torn off when Deadpool destroys them during their fight in the Honda Odyssey, and the rest of the torso is blasted off in the last part of the film, which took place when the sun wasn't out and when they were indoors respectively.
- Deadpool described Wolverine's cowl as like Batman, but being able to move his neck, which is a reference to how the Batman costume restricted neck movement in the Tim Burton-Joel Schumacher tetralogy and Batman Begins, although was rectified in The Dark Knight onward, with the correction being maintained in subsequent franchises/versions.
- A cup for the movie was featured with Wolverine’s cowl that came out before the movie.
- Despite the toy of Wolverine to promote the movie, had him with both the cowl and sleeves on, in the movie, Wolverine loses his sleeves after the car fight, and Wolverine only puts his cowl on before him and Deadpool fight the Deadpool Corps, making him more comic accurate.
- Deadpool's adamantium katanas and Logan's skeleton allow the first appearance of adamantium in the MCU, which had previously used Vibranium, another fictional Marvel metal, but used it in cases that were originally adamantium (such as Ultron's body) because Marvel Studios had not yet acquired the film rights for the other metal.
- He has a low opinion of the Avengers, although also believing the X-Men had low standards for recruits.
- Although he is not the same Wolverine as that of the X-Men Movies, when Cassandra enters his mind, archive footage from the previous films is used as a flashback, despite these events being part of the other Wolverine's life. This implies that Logan had a similar life to his counterpart. However, one of the stock images was from the movie Logan, which only depicts the life of the original Wolverine who at that time was old and weakened due to genetically modified substances that (almost) completely suppressed mutant genes, in which it had also compromised his healing factor, thus causing Adamantium poisoning to be taking place in his body.
- It is also noted that this Wolverine is over 200 years old, meaning that his reality took place in post-2032s, while the original Wolverine from Earth-10005 died at 197 years old in the movie Logan that took place in 2029. Traditionally, Wolverine's accepted birth date is 1832.
- The scene showing Logan's mindscape is a reference to the 2005 comic House of M, where there's a panel showing Wolverine remember his whole life.
