Biography[]
Wolverine participated in an attack on the Red Skull's stronghold as a member of Sgt. Fury's Howling Commandos squad during World War II. He fought alongside Captain America and Bucky in this conflict. Fury referred to him as "Howlett" at this point, therefore it is assumed that he was aware of his entire identity.
After this, James was chosen to join unit X, a top-secret mutant black ops unit supported by the Canadian government, along with his best friend Victor Creed, Mystique, and Deadpool. Things were going nicely for a while. James and Mystique even got romantically involved.
He carried out a number of tasks, one of which was to kill Nord. Wolverine was unable to complete the task after learning the man had a child, so Sabretooth was brought in to complete the task. Later, Wolverine's memory of the operation was limited to stumbling into flames to save the man's daughter and discovering the man was vanished.
Then, when a new scientist was added to the team's command structure, everything changed. The ideas of this scientist included both surgical and genetic methods of enhancing the mutant agents. James went on a rampage and assisted Mystique in escaping as Victor and Professor Thornton attempted to perform one of the operations on a reluctant Mystique... only to be discovered and subjected to an experiment on himself. The experiment erased the majority of his own memories while also bonding the unbreakable metal alloy Adamantium to his bones.
James, now going by the name Logan, escaped from being a brainwashed assassin after an undetermined period of time and started to wander aimlessly in search of some indication of his past.
Logan once had a romantic relationship with Mariko Yashida, a stunning young woman. However, because Harada was a member of the Yakuza Crime Circle and a member of Japanese nobility, her father wished for her to wed him. For Mariko's hand, Harada challenged Logan to a samurai duel. No abilities; only swords. Although Logan defeated Harada, Mariko still went with him. It turns out that if she hadn't, Logan and her would have been immediately executed by the clan. He left Japan bewildered and broken-hearted.
He joined the X-Men at an unspecified moment during this period. He and the other X-Man Rogue grew close. Because the two of them were so similar and she did not get along well with the other team members, she may have had a crush on him and considered him as a father figure. Unfortunately, he kept leaving and entering, much to Rogue's annoyance. Jean Grey was captivated by Logan when he initially joined the X-Men, much to the chagrin of her boyfriend Scott Summers. There would be competition between Logan and Scott for Jean's love.
Wolverine was wishing the X-Men and the Xavier Institute farewell. Unfortunately, just as he was ready to bid Charles Xavier farewell, an explosion decimated the institute and Jean Grey vanished.
Later, Department H contacted Logan to look into murder and destruction committed by a reportedly American-born beast at the Canadian border. Logan was transported in a helicopter to fly above the location he was believed to be in and jumped from it after smelling the region to collect its scent.
After exploring the creature's damage to the forest, Logan came upon a man who was confused and sobbing beside a creek. He quickly realized that the monster and his scent were identical, so he questioned him. The man, however, became enraged and changed into the Hulk, a gigantic green monster, exposing himself as the monster and starting to assault.
In the middle of the forest, Wolverine and Hulk engaged in a vicious fight. The Hulk was badly stabbed on his back and in other places by Logan, who exploited his quickness, but the latter's pure wrath and might eventually overcame him. Logan's face was repeatedly slammed against the rocky ground by Hulk, who initially thought he was dead.
Logan, however, got back up and started attacking the Hulk again, this time successfully stabbing him in the chest. Suddenly, Logan's erstwhile Weapon X allies began to shoot both Wolverine and the monster repeatedly with tranquilizer bullets.
After a botched attempt to clone him, the entire team was gathered around Logan when he awoke imprisoned and being probed at a facility run by the crew and the Professor. His comrades also informed him of their desire to kill him as each of them mockingly professed their excitement at having him back and within their grasp.
While the others departed to carry out the cloning experiments, Deadpool remained to insult Logan. Soon later, Logan fell asleep, and when he awoke, he discovered Deathstrike tearing at the capsule that was keeping him alive. While the Professor said in the background that they needed him alive in order for the cloning experiments to succeed, she corroborated Deadpool's comments about her loathing for him and her wish to murder him. However, Sabretooth killed him by stabbing him in the back, freeing them up to kill Wolverine.
Logan's capsule was broken by Deathstrike, who also stabbed him in the back with her nails. Sabretooth grabbed him up and held him so he was immobile. Deathstrike, on the other hand, rushed to kill him and stabbed Logan in the torso, passing through Sabretooth as well to liberate Wolverine. He engaged Deathstrike in combat and severed his cybernetic limbs before dispatching the several soldiers in the hallway with ease.
Logan entered Bruce Banner's laboratory, where he used to go by the name Hulk, and destroyed the capsule he was in. The two then made an attempt to flee, but Weapon X, who was now free to murder him, stopped them in their tracks. While Omega Red strangled Logan with his metal tentacles, Deadpool held Banner at gunpoint. After some time, Logan managed to escape the hold and disarm Deadpool of his weapon.
Logan fought back as the rest of the team rejoined them in their altercation with him. While Logan and Deadpool fled, Banner grew angrier and furious before resuming his Hulk form and attacked the others. Hulk was enraged when Deadpool tried to kill him by putting a grenade in his mouth. Nevertheless, the two were able to travel further because Hulk was preoccupied with Deathstrike and Omega Red. He eventually caught up to them and sent Wolverine flying out of the structure while also demolishing it. When The Hulk touched down next to him, they got into another fight, but this time it seemed like neither had won because they both made it out alive.
Wolverine managed to save Spider-Man from three dinosaurs by killing them, something the latter did not like, until Kang started calling his armies from the past and future. He initially believed that the communication from Iron Man was intended for the webhead after hearing it. Despite this, he replied and joined the New Avengers, who eventually used a divide-and-conquer tactic to defeat Kang. Logan replied to Code: White when Galactus arrived, and he then went to his designated location. He then walked away from the location.
In one of his flashbacks, he wakes up next to a road. He runs to the scene of the explosion as it occurs as he leaves. A youngster is engulfed in a burning pileup of a railway and many RVs. Just before saving the child, Wolverine leaps into the turmoil and is obliterated by an explosion. Despite being informed that the MRD is approaching, the child's family decides to take Logan in. Logan is still recovering from the explosion when the MRD show up and take the family into custody. Logan puts up a valiant battle, but the MRD are better equipped than he is, and they buy enough time for the family to be removed.
Wolverine and Beast break into an MRD compound on a whim and liberate the family and the captive mutants. Logan thinks that it is time to revive the X-Men in order to save mutant kind after seeing the MRD's full potential. Cyclops, Magneto, and Rogue are among those who have doubts about Wolverine's ability to serve as the X-Men's leader. There are no protests from the group, however, when Charles Xavier arrives with a message from the future stating that Wolverine must lead the X-Men in order to stop a future where mutants are hunted.
Wolverine is asked to assist Nick Fury of SHIELD in bringing down the Hulk, who has run amok in the Canadian wilderness. Wolverine is threatened by Fury, who names all X-Men present in the new Institute and warns him that if he refuses to cooperate, he would hand them over to the MRD. Wolverine naturally cooperates and goes in pursuit of the Hulk, only to discover that Bruce Banner had been asked to bring in a "monster" that SHIELD had actually produced. Logan has strong enmity toward SHIELD for whatever reason. He warned Fury that if he ever pulled the same ploy again, he wouldn't aid him the next time and would instead let Hulk come out and say "thank you" to Fury.
