Worms are the central protagonists of the Worms video game series.
Information[]
Worms can be either player-controlled or CPU-controlled. The games consist of two or more teams battling each other in a deathmatch type of game, unless a training mission is being played, which may only feature just one team or one worm attempting to accomplish objectives, instead of killing other worms.
Worms have a large variety of weapons and gadgets to fight with, and are more than capable in using all of them. The weapons range from being standard weaponry to being unrealistic and comical - this ranges from having bazookas, grenades and air strikes, to using explosive flying sheep, explosive old women and explosive bananas. The gadgets used by worms are devices that don't necessarily do damage, but assist in other ways, with examples such as a jet pack with limited fuel that can fly over obstacles, the ability to see the contents of supply drop crates, turning invisible to enemy teams (which is only available in online games) and placing girders around for easier travel.
Teams of worms are differentiated by colors, which show as different colors of names and health values. Teams can be highly customized, such as choosing a team name for them, a name for each individual worm, a favorite weapon, flags, gravestones, speech soundbanks, winning fanfares, etc.
In every Worms game to date, the gameplay is turn based, and the game will go in order when choosing a worm when it's a team's turn to play, though some games may allow selecting which worm will move. This can also be done by using a "Worm Select" utility, if one is available. A turn ends once a worm uses a weapon, takes damage or dies instantly went touching water. Depending on the type of mission or game being played, the objectives of worms may differ. The most standard type of game is for opposing teams of worms to simply kill each other, however, when playing missions, other objectives may be introduced. As mentioned before, some missions may just involve from getting from point A to point B, or act as a training session to teach the player how to use certain weapons and gadgets.
One of the most prominent and dangerous hazards to a worm is water, which is featured in every Worms game to date. Once a worm touches water, it will die immediately, sinking to the bottom and losing all of its health. Despite the Worms being seen with hands, they are always unable to swim out. Depending on the game, it is possible for a worm to skip across the water and land safely in there's any reachable land in the worm's path. This depends on the angle the worms hits the water and how fast it was moving. There are weapons and game settings that can raise the water every turn, making gameplay even harder as time goes on.
Another common hazard that Worms can suffer is being poisoned, which turns them into a sickly green color, and makes them lose a small amount of health every turn. Poison will never kill a worm by itself, but can reduce a worm's health to 1, leaving them extremely vulnerable. Poison can be cured by collecting a health crate.
Appearance[]
Worms seem to be a bit humanoid. They have large eyes, they have a tail and no legs (obviously), they have a mouth and they have floating eyebrows, they are all pink, they have hands but no arms, etc. However, the original Worms design looked quite different. They were a red-ish color instead of pink, they were skinnier and taller, they had arms, a large nose, their eyes were smaller, and they had lines on their body.
The Worms' appearance has quite changed throughout the years. There was especially a big change in 1997 (Worms 2). In Worms: Revolution, there are 4 different types of Worms with very different appearances. Anyways, the Worms seem to be quite homicidal (and suicidal), as seen in gameplay, and in many cutscenes of the game. The most well-known Worms characters are Boggy B, Spadge, and Clagnut, who appeared in the Wormsongs.
Personality[]
The personality of the Worms are somewhat complex and random. In every game, the Worms speak in a militaristic and straightforward way, though at the same time, this is mixed with comedic silliness and immaturity. The responses they give depend on what has transpired at a specific moment during a worm's turn. This includes a worm feeling disoriented when hanging upside down from a bungee cord, gloating about revenge when damaging a worm that harmed it in a previous turn, showing fear when a nearby stick of dynamite is seconds from going off, and expressing happiness when collecting a crate.
The videos that come with Worms 2 show off the aforementioned silliness and immaturity of the worms. The videos show the murderous and wrathful nature of the Worms, but often in a cartoonish and buffoonish sense. There are many times where Worms may embarrassingly get themselves killed due to their own incompetence.
Each team of Worms have their own soundbank that can be easily customized. These soundbanks generally come in different accents and nationalities, though some may just be a specific dialect, such as l33tspeak, speaking in memes, rapping, southern redneck English, etc. These soundbanks can provide some personality of a Worm's team, combined with how the player or AI chooses to control them.
Designs[]
- At first, they appeared to be quite weird compared to real life earthworms. They had a humanoid, muscular build in their upper body, a defined neck and a long bottle shaped nose. The worms would slowly change over the years to look like we know them today.
- In the cover art of Worms: The Director's Cut, the worm looked more ugly than in Worms Reinforcements, Worms United and the first Worms game, as its body was even more defined, it had an even longer nose, crooked teeth, a long tongue and a furious expression.
- In the cover art of Worms 2 and Worms Armageddon, they started to look a little more like the current worms, but not quite. Now their bodies were no longer defined and muscular, instead short and squished, as how the worms standardly look. However, they still have noses, now small and squished noses showing their nostrils, instead of the bottle-shaped nose, and the humanoid arms, while shorter, are still present.
- In the cover art of Worms World Party, the picture was better than before. The noses are now gone all together, but it's still not quite there. The arms are still attached, albeit a little shorter now, and some have more realistic human teeth. When you see the back group of the worms, they look similar to them in tribute mode.
- Worms 3D was the first game to have the worms completely as we know them today, with short, squished and chubby light pink bodies, no noses, detached arms that appear limbless like Rayman, floating eyebrows and hands, and a large, white toothy, cartoony smile.
- In Worms Revolution, the worms were given a slight redesign, giving them a different body shape. They were also separated into different Classes. The Soldier retains the original look, the Scout is slightly smaller than the other classes, the Scientist is a bit small but bigger than the Scout, and has a large brain, and the Heavy is big and bulky, with a different eye shape compared to the other three.
- In Worms W.M.D., the worms changed their style. They now look more mean-looking, have dotted eyes and sharp teeth, and a toothy grin. They still appear limbless, though their heads are slightly flatter than before.
