~ Wrys to Marth and many others. |
Wrys (リフ, Rif) is a supporting character of the Archanea series of the Fire Emblem franchise. A modest curate of Talys, Wrys was one of first civilians who volunteered his services to Marth during the War of Shadows. Later Wrys would assist Marth once again during the War of Heroes.
Wrys is voiced by Kentarō Tone in the Japanese and D.C. Douglas in English, who also voices Barst in the same game series.
Appearance[]
Wrys is an elderly man with a bald head. He wears a blue cloak fastened with ropes over a black monk's habit. Wrys also wears simple brown boots.
Personality[]
A trained healer, Wrys is a generous individual more than willing to use his talents with staves to help the suffering. He holds an appreciation for the friendships that develop between people. Wrys has a particular fondness for children, and is fascinated with their ability to learn and grow. In spite of his compassion, he prefers not to heal children unless their wounds are truly grave, for Wrys believes that experiencing danger and minor injuries are important for healthy growth.
Biography[]
War of Shadows[]
Born in a small village south of Talys Castle, Wrys lived a long and humble life as a curate. When the War of Shadows resulted in Prince Marth of Altea's exile to Talys, however, Wrys' magnanimity compelled him to assist Marth in the reclamation of his homeland. Such resolve was strengthened when Galder Pirates led by Gazzak besieged Talys, and Wrys told his fellow countrymen to let him know if Marth set foot in his village. During his campaign to rout the pirates, Marth did indeed reach Wrys' village, and the curate immediately offered his healing abilities to the prince's cause.
After defeating Gazzak, Marth's retinue travelled to Galder Harbor, where Wrys healed wounded soldiers as the slew the pirate captain Gomer and ended the pirates' threat to Archanea. Wrys then travelled with Marth as he undertook a lengthy campaign to free Altea and the rest of Archanea from the tyranny of the Dolhr empire. Upon the War of Shadow's conclusion with the slaying of Dolhr's emperor Medeus, Wrys moved to Altea and constructed a monastery to watch over children orphaned during the war.
War of Heroes[]
One year after the War of Shadows, Wrys helped support a new generation of Altea's knights. Early on in this regimen, he was assigned to the 7th Platoon (which consisted of Kris, Katarina, Luke, Roderick, and Ryan) as their healer, much to the dismay of the womanizing Luke, who hoped for a cute female cleric instead. In spite of Luke's disappointment, Wrys proved a faithful curate through the 7th Platoon's remaining trials. In the coming months, the hundreds of recruits dwindled down to 20, including the 7th Platoon. Ultimately, they overcame their last challenge and received their final score, which varied depending their performance in each mock battle. Nevertheless, the platoon did well enough to graduate to full knighthood. However, on the day of the 7th Platoon's graduation ceremony, an unknown number of assailants besieged Altea castle. It was then that Katarina revealed her true identity as Reese, an assassin sent to kill Marth. As Wrys played an important role in the 7th Platoon's success, he was present at the graduation ceremony and healed them as they successfully fended off Reese. With Marth's safety insured, Wrys announced his plans to embark on a long journey, but told Kris that they may meet again.
Wrys' travels took him to the mountains of Macedon. Unfortunately for the humble curate, a group of assassins led by Clarisse ambushed him. Wrys resigned himself to death, but Marth and Kris happened to be in Macedon stopping a coup on the orders of the cruel Lang, occupying leader of Grust and general of the reconstructed Holy Empire of Archanea. After defeating the usurper Lykke, they received intel from Jagen about Wrys' predicament, and drove Clarisse's forces of in the nick of time. A grateful Wrys offered to shave Kris' head, and rejoined Marth's army regardless of their decision. Meeting with Lang, Marth was ordered to retrieve the royal children Jubello and Yuliya, who Lang previously imprisoned but were rescued by the mercenary Ogma. Marth, who by this point was disgusted with Lang's insolence and lack of conscience, refused to follow any more of the general's orders. Lang declared Marth's defiance an act of war, but fled when challenged by Jagen. Wrys helped search for Ogma and Grust's heirs, finding the three surrounded by bandits. Wrys healed the wounded as they helped fend off the rogues, but Marth was interrupted by Princess Caeda's arrival. She explained that was one of the few people that managed to flee a surprise attack on Altea led by the Archanean Empire and its emperor, the formerly benevolent Hardin who had secretly become corrupted. Deciding to liberate the Grustian people, Marth's army marched on Lang's stronghold, Ostern Keep. After healing Marth and the others who assisted with Lang's defeat, Wrys followed Marth through the rest of the War of Heroes, which concluded when Marth slew a resurrected Medeus. With the war's end, Wrys returned to his monastery in Altea. When not watching the orphaned children, Wrys served as a curate for future prospective knights of Altea.
