Xianyun, commonly known by her title as Cloud Retainer, is a major and playable character in the 2020 video game Genshin Impact. Prior to her playability, she was seen as a bluish white crane.
Portrayals[]
- In the Japanese Version, she is voiced by Nakatomi Mana.
- In the English Version, she is voiced by Stephanie Panisello, who voices Claire Redfield from Resident Evil 2 remake and Fairy from Trials of Mana.
- In the Mandarin version, she is voiced by Qin Ziyi, who also voiced Shenhe in the same role, and Cleo Sertori from H2O: Mermaid Adventures series.
Appearance[]
Xianyun is a tall woman with long, navy high ponytail hair that has light blue undertones, secured with a hairpin resembling a crane. She has shorter eyebrows and wears red glasses. Although Xianyun seems to take the form of a human, her taloned fingers is shaped like crane claws. Her flowy dress mix whites, greens, blues, and yellows, and she adorns many pendants. She wears high heels and seems to be fond of accessories.
In her crane from, she is bodied in white with blue, gold, and black plumage. Underneath her eyes are red markings, similar to the human forms of Morax and Alatus.
Synopsis[]
Cloud Retainer is one of Morax's old allies, having been friends with him and the God of Dust, Guizhong, while the latter was still alive. Retainer and Guizhong had a shared interested in mechanics and were both compatriots and rivals in their research in the subject, though Guizhong eventually perished during the Archon War in the same battle that led to the fall of the Guili Assembly。
At some point in time, Cloud Retainer built her house above Qingyun Peak. Interestingly, the journal found there suggests that its writer speaks of the adepti as though she were not one of them, at least at the time the journal was written. Also notable is that unlike her fellow adeptus Mountain Shaper's domain sealed by a large adeptal talisman, the door to Cloud Retainer's abode is identical to other domains found throughout Teyvat.
Several yaers ago, Shenhe's father attempted an art known as "Fate Transference" to bring back his deceased wife, offering his daughter as a sacrifice to a malevolent god. Sensing the evil emanating from the art, she made her way to its source, where she found that Shenhe had defeated the entity and held her mother's dagger at her. She convinced her that she was friendly before the girl fell unconscious. Taking pity on her due to the circumstances she had endured and noting her talent, Cloud Retainer decided to adopt her as a disciple, believing that even if she had tarried, Shenhe would have still prevailed.
When the Traveler arrived in Liyue, they went to the Rite of Descension to speak with Morax but instead witnessed his "death". Facing the military expelling, the Traveler managed to get Cloud Retainer out by cooking some food for her; when she learned of the situation, she flew into a fury, but was calmed by the Traveler when he reminded her of her contract with Morax. She later assisted her fellow adepti and the Liyue Qixing in fighting Osial, which result in Osial's defeat under Jade Chamber.
In the third year, she told the Traveler about Shenhe's past and watched the fight against Beisht. When Beisht fled, Cloud Retainer approached the group and remarked to Keqing on how Shenhe had contributed significantly but was pleased with how the mortals were fending for themselves.
Two years later, Cloud Retainer decide to come to Liyue to visit Ganyu and Shenhe with Traveler and Paimon and adopt human name as Xianyun. While at Wanmin restaurant, they meet an old woman name Yuandai and her granddaughter name Shuyu. Yuandai have an amnesia problem so Cloud Retainer decide to help her by go to the locations of legend nameless hero that use to help her.
After go to many locations they finally relize that Yuandai was an disciple of Cloud Retainer who was just a crane like her that gain human intelligent from the process of "cultivation". She was train with Cloud Retainer until one day she fall in love with a man. However, because her training is not yet complete, she is still not a true adepti so she didn't have immortality and can't stay in human from for long and she only be able to be in human from because Cloud Retainer potion. She decide to force herself to stay in human from so she can married him, the side effect of not return to her crane from is she will lose her memory while she was a crane and in the end, she will transfrom into a monster. For many decades, a nameless hero has give their family medicine that will slow down the side effect, that nameless heroes was Cloud Retainer all along, using her own blood to save her old student.
Xianyun say she never feel angry or resentment for Yuandai choice, because eventually all parents/teachers must let their children/students go so they can growth up and made choices by themselves. Xianyun say Yuandau body is and soul is already at her limit and only way to save her is she must revert back to her crane from, which will cause her to lose human intelligent, and she will need to restart her cultivation process from zero. Yuandai say goodbye to her Shuyu before revert back to her crane from and fly away which make Shuyu crying. Xianyun say to Traverler, Paimon and Shuyu that crying is natural emotional respone and they should take a nap after the problem is solve. While naps, Xianyun use her adepti power to make them have a good dream. Traveler has a dream of reunite with their sibling in the dream. When Traveler wake up, they cried that they have to wake up from dream. Xianyun say that she believe their dream can become real and if they ever need to break, she's always ready to welcome them, because it is an elders duty to take care of the younglings.
After that Shuyu ask Xianyun to become her disciple so she can become adepti to help people. Paimon warn that Shenhe and Ganyu only eat flower and grass, but Xianyun say that's unnecessary as long as they keep their spirit pure and everyone has a diffrents way to be teach. Xianyun decide to permamently move to Liyue Harbor so she can teach Shuyu and meet with Shenhe and Ganyu easier, ask Paimon and Traveler to not reveal their true identity to the public.

- Her full adeptus name in the original Chinese versions, Liúyún Jièfēng Zhēnjūn (Chinese: 留云借风真君) translates to “Perfected Lord who Retains the Clouds by Borrowing the Wind,” is shortened in most non-Sinitic translations to “Cloud Retainer” or a variation thereof.
