Captain Yami Sukehiro (ヤミ・スケヒロ) is one of the main characters in the Black Clover franchise.
He was a former fisherman from the Land of the Sun, before he was ship-wrecked to the Clover Kingdom. Since then, he became the first captain of the Clover Kingdom's Black Bull squad of the Magic Knights and a former member of the Grey Deer squad (now; known as Aqua Deer), formely led by the Wizard King Julius Novachrono.
Despite his lazy demeanor, he is heavily regarded as one of the greatest fighters in the series while also being one of the strongest in Clover Kingdom. He is also the mentor of the Black Bull new recruit Asta and the love interest of the Blue Rose Knights squad captain Charlotte Roselei.
In Japanese, he is voiced by Junichi Suwabe who also provided the voice for Bercouli Herlentz in Sword Art Online, Leone Abbacchio from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind. In English, he is voiced by Christopher R. Sabat, who also voiced Vegeta and Piccolo in the Dragon Ball franchise and All Might in the My Hero Academia franchise.
Appearance[]
A tall man with a very muscular build, Yami has grey eyes and black hair of medium length that is messily combed backward, making it stick outwards. Additionally, he sports a stubble mustache and beard.
Yami's attire is very simple and consists only of white A-shirt and black trousers. The trousers have an extra layer of tan leather that covers his outer thighs and down to his knees. The trousers are only supported by a belt around his waist. Yami wears another pair of belts, one of which he uses to carry his grimoire. Lastly, he wears black high boots that cover most of his calves.
As the captain of the Black Bull squad, he wears a black banner with the squad's insignia on it. He wears it over his right shoulder, and it is attached by two strings to his left shoulder. The banner also has tattered edges, seeming to have been ripped off from a bigger banner. After six months of training, Yami's black banner is now longer to where he now wears it over his right shoulder and under his left arm in a cape-like fashion.
In his youth, he wore the same thing, but his build was not as muscular as it is currently.
For the Star Awards Festival, Yami wears a simple robe over a fundoshi, and a twisted hachimaki tied in the front. He also carries an uchiwa. The fan and the back of the robe bear the kanji 祭 ("festival"), and the linings of his robe bear the kanji for "raging bull" 「暴れ牛 abare ushi, Viz: "Black Bulls"」.

Uncouth, reckless, slightly hypocritical, Yami is prone to delivering death threats at the slightest provocation. Nevertheless, he is a powerful and well-respected Magic Knight who was able to recognize Asta's merits when none of the other Captains would even give him a chance.
He is typically a stoic man who believes more in actions than in words. He is very hot-headed, who can be easily angered by small matters such as being bumped by another person or interrupted when talking. Yami also has a penchant for intimidation whether he uses threatening words or physically harms his target.
He also tends to immediately go straight for a more physical solution to any problems or confrontations, such as when he destroys a part of the squad's headquarters to calm his subordinates. Despite being very bull-headed, reckless, and unrefined, Yami is an experienced and perceptive warrior, picking apart his opponent's strategies with a glance and is constantly trying to come up with counters for them.
Furthermore, he also prefers instilling tough love to his subordinates by giving them dangerous missions. He believes that it is the best way for them to overcome their limits and grow stronger. Yami also does not discriminate people according to their social status or circumstances where he is willing to accept Luck Voltia, Noelle Silva, and Asta to join his ranks, even though he is aware of each of their problems. His concern for them is likely tied to his own circumstances, being treated as an outcast in his youth like they are.
History[]
A short and abridged version of Yami Sukehiro's life.
Yami Sukehiro was born as the son to a fishermen couple in the distant land known as the Hino Country or Land of the Sun. While out fishing one day as a child, Yami suddenly found himself shipwrecked and washed ashore in the Clover Kingdom. Alone in a strange land and unable to speak the language, he was met with troubles due to the culture shock and racial discrepancies. However, Yami was able to survive and adapt somewhat to his new surroundings and life as he frequently beat the crap out of anyone who attempted to mass with him due to his status as a foreigner.
Around his 15th birthday, Yami would receive his grimoire and display the rare magic attribute of Dark Magic which led to others to fear and hate him. Rumors quickly spread about him, which attracted the attention of Nacht Faust. The two got along as they enjoyed committing petty crimes together. Later around this period, Yami also encountered a Magic Knight captain named Julius Novachrono, who was fascinated by his magic and invited him to join the Magic Knights which he quickly refused but also quickly accepted after the strange man offered to buy him a meal. Months Later after taking and passing the Magic Knights Entrance Exam he was recruited into Julius's squad, the Grey Deer. Julius would also teach him how to read and write in the Clover Kingdom's language. During his days in the squad, he befriended Morgen Faust, his old childhood friend Nacht's younger twin brother, nearly killed Lotus Whomalt as he injured and scarred the Diamond Kingdom Mage during a conflict between their kingdoms.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Dark Magic: A extremely rare form of magic attribute, Yami can generate and manipulate the element of darkness. He primarily uses this magic by channeling it into his katana. This magic has the ability to draw in other forms of magic, namely Light Magic, absorbing it into the darkness, and can even affect the other world. Due to his Dark Magic's ability to affect the other world naturally, Yami is ranked as an Arcane Stage mage.
- Master Swordsman: Arguably the greatest swordsman in the Clover Kingdom, Yami has described himself as a magic swordsman. He is extremely skilled in swordsmanship; he easily fights on par with Patolli, the leader of the Eye of the Midnight Sun, with nothing but swordplay in conjunction with his Dark Magic, destroying the surrounding environment.
- Enhanced Strength: Yami naturally possesses tremendous physical strength which he further increases with magic. He easily threw Asta a considerable distance with just one hand.
- Enhanced Reflexes: Using his mastery of ki, Yami can predict and react to attacks that others cannot keep up with and nonchalantly counters these attacks without having to turn around. By combining Mana Zone with Ki-sensing, Yami can react to his opponents' movements before they make them, similar to Julius's future-seeing ability, though he states that it is not on Julius's level.
- Immense Durability: Yami is an extremely durable fighter, remaining unfazed when hit by Patolli's light blades, and emerges completely unscathed at his attempted cave in. His amount of durability let him still attack and remain standing after being hit by a huge pillar of stone created by Dante Zogratis.
- Enhanced Speed: Yami is extremely fast, able to keep up with and surprise someone as fast as Patolli with his speed. When Lotus Whomalt attempts to launch a surprise attack on William Vangeance, despite having to climb a massive tree, Yami arrives just in time to intercept him. He is also capable of dodging Marx's elf-enhanced arrows that are faster than normal. His enhanced reflexes from Mana Zone and Ki-sensing, as well as the power boost from Mana Zone, allow him to dodge devil-enhanced attacks for a short time.
- Immense Magic Power: As a captain of a Magic Knights squad, Yami possesses an immense amount of magic power, which is greater than all commoners and nobles, with only very powerful Clover royals, the strongest of elves, and high-ranking devil's surpassing him in this regard. Anti-birds flee as soon as they realize his presence, and the slightest release of his power intimidates multiple people. After Yami blocks and counters Patolli, Valtos wonders if the captain could rival the Magic Emperor. Gifso, the High Priest of the Seabed Temple, acknowledges Yami as being too powerful for his game. When watching his squad fight to the brink of death, he surpasses his limits to escape Abari's Different Dimension Sphere and becomes powerful enough to easily defeat Vetto. Julius Novachrono states that Yami has grown more powerful after he returned to the kingdom.
- Ki: A principle originating from his homeland, this skill allows him to use a sixth sense to perceive and react to unseen attacks and persons.
- Mana Zone: After training, Yami can control all the mana in an area around him to increase his spells' power and range, and to stand and maneuver in midair.
