Yasuke, also referred to by Portuguese Jesuits under the baptized name "Diogo", is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Fujibayashi Naoe) of the 2025 video game, Assassin's Creed: Shadows.

Once a slave to the Portuguese, he was brought to Japan and caught the attention of Oda Nobunaga, who made him a samurai. He serves as the game's more open combat-focused protagonist.

He is voiced by Tongayi Chirisa in English and Yuichi Jose in Japanese.

Story[]

Yusuke was an African samurai who served the Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga. In 1579, the Portuguese Empire brought him as a slave to the port city of Sakai. According to the Chronicle of Nobunaga, he entered into Nobunaga's service a few years later after capturing his attention as the first African man he had ever met and impressing him with his strong stature and intelligence.

In 1581, Yasuke and his lord invaded Iga Province as part of the Tenshō Iga War, devastating the region. Despite having destroyed Fujibayashi Naoe's home, Yasuke later allied himself with the young Igan Assassin, joining the Kakushiba ikki. As one of Naoe's most important allies, Yasuke often accompanied her on the field, assisting her in not just intelligence-gathering but also assassinations.

Personality[]

Yasuke was a pensive and clever man, who was able to learn the Japanese people's language, customs, and martial arts quickly upon arriving in their country. His respect for the local culture enabled his adaptation to his new environment. These qualities, alongside his physical prowess and aptitude in combat, were what made Oda Nobunaga develop an interest in him. His practical sensibilities complemented the fiery and passionate temperament of his later ally Fujibayashi Naoe.

Having personally experienced societies worlds apart from another, Yasuke nonetheless observed that they all shared common features no matter their cultural differences. Whether it was the world of his homeland, that of his Portuguese slavers, or that of the Japanese warlords, self-interest, power politics, and violence seemed to be the universal language. It was Naoe who challenged him to discover through his own choices that a world not dictated by these features was possible.

Skills & Equipment[]

Having lived a hard life, working as a slave all over the world in many different positions, Yasuke was a skilled survivalist and fighter even before training as a Samurai, which helped shortcut much of his training from the traditional 4-5 years to only a few months.

Trained by the legendary Samurai Master and teacher Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, Yasuke became well versed in swordplay and martial arts, as well as the Naginata and Kanabo. He was also an extremely proficient archer, being capable of shooting effectively even from horseback. He was also a capable marksman with firearms. Serving as an officer in the Oda Clan's army, Yasuke became an effective battlefield leader and a clever operative, though his strong sense of honor caused him to primarily avoid using stealth tactics prior to joining the Assassins. He easily outmatched most Samurai and elite soldiers that he confronted, and was equally capable of overpowering European soldiers as well, even the well trained Portuguese Templar enforcers serving under Nuno Caro. He was capable of defeating Nobutsuna's graduated students in single combat, even Yagyū Munetoshi, who had earned the title of "Sword Saint" for his immense mastery as a swordsman. He later faced his greatest opponent in the form of the Templar Diamyo Kimura Kei, who's skill rivalled Yasuke's own. He finally defeated his former enslaver Nuno Caro, outmatching the skilled fencer in a climatic duel.

Although not his preference, Yasuke was a skilled covert operative, being capable enough of stealth and espionage, though nowhere near the abilities of his comrade Naoe. He could crouch or go prone and hide in bushes, tall grass, in the shadows at night, and numerous hiding places, though his large build often impeded him from hiding as effectively as the small-statured Naoe could.

Yasuke was also multilingual, fluent in Portuguese, Japanese, and Medieval Latin. His fluency of Japanese surprising many native speakers of the language.
