Personality[]
In the first half of the film, Yin Jiao is the most fanatical admirer and follower of his father Yin Shou. He regards his father as a perfect hero and a great king, and is willing to go through fire and water for his father, even at the cost of his life. His rash speech of "Please let my father pass the throne to me" is also motivated by the desire to share the burden of heaven's punishment for his father, which is an extreme embodiment of filial piety. As the crown prince of the Shang Dynasty and the chief of the royal guards, he is highly skilled in martial arts and is extremely brave in charging into battle. In the battle of Jizhou City, he led the way, reflecting his bravery and sense of responsibility as a soldier. Yin Jiao's emotions are very outgoing, he has a clear distinction between love and hate, and lacks political tact and scheming. His respect for his father, his love for his mother, his hatred for Daji, and his brotherly love for Ji Fa are all very direct and strong.Whether it is the eagerness to offer the Conferred God List to save his father, or the grief and anger of chasing Daji because of his mother's tragic death, and later shouting in despair "Please pass the throne to me", it shows that his behavior is dominated by strong emotions and is prone to impulsive and reckless decisions.
He has a deep affection for his mother, and his mother's suicide is the key fuse for his mental breakdown and personality change. The death of his mother made him waver and suffer great pain for his father for the first time. He and Ji Fa are like brothers and trust each other. Even in the moment of being hunted down and extremely desperate, he subconsciously sought help from Ji Fa. This friendship was one of the few warmth in his dark experience.
This was the core driving force behind Yin Jiao's character transformation. He witnessed the true face of his father Yin Shou step by step: his cold-bloodedness towards his grandfather and brother, his indifference to his mother's death, his desecration of the ancestral temple (burning), his cruelty to his uncle, and finally his ruthless pursuit of himself. This collapse of faith was devastating. When he finally confirmed that his father was not only unkind and unjust, but even wanted to kill him, his world was completely turned upside down. The once sincere loyalty and filial piety instantly turned into deep hatred and complete despair. His cry of "Yin Shou! I will never let you go even if I die!" marks his transformation from a loyal and filial prince to a grief-stricken avenger.
The tragedy of Yin Jiao is that the things he cherished and believed in most in his life were precisely the root of his ultimate destruction. He became one of the biggest victims of his father's desire for power and the evil of human. Facing his father's powerful power and cold scheming, his resistance seemed particularly tragic and powerless. His fate was full of a strong sense of fate, as if he was crushed by an invisible giant wheel.
