Hero Overview

That is a dead end. That is the final destination of all fate. There is nothing beyond. That person is the only thing standing in the end, because it is the end. The end of everything in the form of a person.

~ Yogiri when using his ability

Yogiri Takatou is the main protagonist of the light novel, manga, and anime series Instant Death. He is a teenaged boy whose class gets transported to another world, where they are tasked with gaining enough power to become Sages. Once he wakes up to the situation, he ends up traveling alongside his classmate Tomochika Dannoura with the goal of returning to Earth. Since birth, he's had the supernatural ability to inflict death upon someone by simply thinking about it, as well as the ability to sense others' intent to harm him, and passively eliminate the source of said harm before the source is able to act on it. During his childhood, he was heavily surveilled and referred to with the classification "ΑΩ".

In reality, he is the avatar for what embodies the end of all existence, an incomprehensible and absolute being. Despite his immense power, he doesn't like using his ability unless someone is wishing harm against him or Tomochika. He has three gates in which he contains his powers. The first gate restricts his power completely and unsealing it allows him to inflict instant death on anything including objects, immortal beings, and spirits. Unsealing the second gate allows him to kill laws of physics and concepts. Unsealing the third gate allows him to kill beings who are required to exist for reality to exist.

He is voiced by Koki Uchiyama in Japanese and by David Matranga in English (who also voiced Shoto Todoroki in My Hero Academia and Wave in Akame Ga Kill).

Appearance[]

As a child, Yogiri wears traditional Japanese clothing. In his current image, he wears a white dress shirt with black stripes around the collar, and a black tie that has a white stripe on it. Occasionally, Yogiri will wear a grey coat which is brown in the light novel. He has dark brown hair (Black in the anime) with two cowlicks that appear blue.

Yogiri's true form has been implied to appear as true darkness. An all-encompassing void that is completely incomprehensible, even to the most powerful gods of the Instant Death multiverse. Fan depictions of the true form usually include all seeing eyes. Despite these eyes being stated to be conceptual, the anime's opening does include the eyes when depicting Yogiri's true form.

Personality[]

Yogiri is reserved and speaks bluntly and sometimes sarcastically. He is rational and will even get upset when someone refers to him as a psycho or a killer, as he has his own moral code he sticks to. Even in apparently dangerous situations, he's always fairly calm, even sleeping through things sometimes.

As a child, Yogiri was more outgoing and cared deeply for his mother-figure Asaka Takatou. Yogiri was extremely oblivious as a child, not knowing how dangerous he really was. He didn't even seem to notice that countless people that were trying to stop him were dying as soon as they thought about harming him.

Trivia[]

  • Yogiri means Night Fog and is based on Asaka's dog's name.
  • His last name is Asaka's last name she gave to him.
  • If someone were to somehow damage Yogiri's human form, it wouldn't do anything to his true form.
  • In the spin-off novel, Yogiri and Tomochika are dating.
  • Throughout the series, it is stated that Yogiri is rapidly approaching omniscience. He seems to have achieved this by the end when his very existence defines the ultimate set of worlds.
  • Yogiri has killed the QnA section of the novel.
  • Yogiri is canonically more powerful than the plot of the series itself.
