Heroine Overview

I don't need to be at peace. I don't care if I have to bloody my hands. Even if it means living a life that could end at any moment... Even if it means having to leave the Forger family... I think Loid would respect that. He would understand. That's why I won't give up this fight!
~ Yor Forger to herself, during her fight with the Swordsman.

Appearance[]

Yor Forger is a very beautiful woman and is noted as such by many characters such as Loid, Yor's brother Yuri and Yor's female coworkers. She has light skin, black hair, reddish eyes and a slender yet curvaceous figure, deceptively hiding her immense strength. Her hair has a headband and is split into two-part ways which crosses over her head. She has a pair of dangling earrings.

She usually wears a red sweater that exposes her shoulders and back along with a red skirt. Her lower body outfit consists of black leggings and a pair of brown ankle boots. As the Thorn Princess, Yor dons a black dress that has a red rose pattern underneath along with a pair of fingerless gloves and black thigh boots. Her gold-colored headband contains a golden rose and two long horns on each side. She wields stiletto-like daggers as weapons.

Personality[]

Despite being beautiful and extremely powerful, Yor is rather shy and introverted, coming across as a somewhat aloof individual, interacting minimally with her coworkers and being described by Camilla as a robot. Similarly, Yor is remarkably collected, able to keep her composure in the midst of combat. She is incredibly polite to the point of asking her assassination targets if she may take their lives. After becoming a family with Loid and Anya, Yor becomes more expressive and opens up to her coworkers, asking for help on being a better wife or cooking. She is protective of her faux family, especially towards Anya whom she has no trouble defending with extreme violence.

Due to spending most of her life as an assassin, Yor's ways of thinking are often highly deviant. She is frequently inclined to solve problems through murder, such as imagining killing everyone at Camilla's party after the latter threatens to tell Yor's brother that she came without a date in order to prevent him from knowing. She also daydreams about assassinating the parent of an Eden Academy applicant, so Anya is ensured a place. To this extent, she has an affinity towards weapons, being captivated by a painting of a guillotine and a table knife. Although, she does often realise that the assassination solutions would be unacceptable in civilian life, thus argues against her instincts while chastising herself.

Despite her job, Yor is a genuinely kind person, with a strong maternal and big sister instinct. She's very protective of her adopted family and her younger brother. Indeed, she became an assassin to provide for her younger brother when they became orphans, and now her goal is to kill evil and vile people to make innocents' lives better.

In a complete idiosyncrasy, Yor is extremely gullible, being easily fooled by the ridiculous lies Loid tells her to hide his identity. Yor has a startling lack of common sense, asking Camilla if boogers made coffee taste better in response to her suggestion that they put one in their superior's coffee. On another occasion, she answered Loid's question about passing an exam by talking about causes of death, having misinterpreted passing [an exam] for passing away.

Yor is shown to be insecure about herself and her abilities, believing she is not good at anything apart from killing or cleaning, and she constantly worries that she's not being a good wife or mother. After the interview at Eden Academy, she tries to be more of a normal mother to Anya by trying to cook and asking Camilla for cooking lessons.

She shows an inability to properly understand the emotional states or opinions of others, unless they are explicitly explained to her, but even then, she can misinterpret their meaning. When Anya shows distress - most commonly from reading Yor's mind to see her recent violent job - Yor feels like she had done something wrong to her recently or in the moment; granted, this is a more understandable confusion due to not knowing her step-daughter's powers, but she still blames herself nonetheless. Yor also displays ignorance about her brother, Yuri's quite intense sister complex, mistaking his often frenetic devotion and desire for her attention as merely an innocent familial love. She also habitually mistakes some of Loid's states of mind as dissatisfaction with her performance in their faux relationship, which perhaps is also indicative of her insecurity and/or paranoia.

While understanding that the arrangement she made with Loid is a false marriage to protect them both from governmental suspicion of single people in their age group, Yor often ponders if she should be taking the marriage more seriously; despite her consideration of treating the marriage more romantically, Yor's significant naivete and lack of experience sabotages her composure, which results in unintentionally violent reactions to Loid's mistaken interpretation that he should act more romantic. She does, however, show innate talent at motherhood, thus is able to provide a genuine maternal kindness and nurturing for Anya; yet despite her acceptance and compassion for Anya, occasional misunderstandings cause her to doubt her place as her mother. Therefore, she feels inferior as both wife and mother, sometimes believing and even expecting she would and should be replaced; even so, she remains dedicated for as long as she thinks her limited time has left.

Abilities[]

Yor's incredible strength and fighting skills.

A trained assassin, Yor Forger is a formidable combatant, specifically in hand-to-hand situations.

  • Assassination: Earning the title of "Thorn Princess", she is an expert in assassination arts, learning at an early age. She can effortlessly fulfill her missions issued by her superior, the Shopkeeper. While she predominantly uses her needle blades, she can turn almost any mundane object into a lethal weapon. She utilizes her cleaning skills in taking care of the aftermath of her assassinations. Yor has intimate knowledge, knowing the lethal points of the human body such as the jugular vein.

  • Master Martial Artist: Yor Forger is a master of martial arts, proficient with the use of her knives. Her amazing prowess are demonstrated when she easily knocks out a delinquent who took over Anya Forger, almost overwhelmed Loid with her series of swift hand-to-hand attacks that even Loid commented that she might kill him.
  • Immense Physical Attributes: She boasts an immense human physique on par with her own husband, Loid. She can muster enough strength to break through wooden doors, destroy a pumpkin with a single blow with using only her bare hand, or even impale a human skull with her knives. Yor's advanced durability includes surviving a bullet wound, resistance to poison, and so on. Her agility and reflexes are on point where she can easily knock out a raging cow with her hands, perform swift consecutive punches against Loid Forger during their "Spy Wars "play, or catching a hot tray of food thrown by Camilla with using only her feet. She is also capable of inhumanly fast bouts of speed, allowing her to catch up to a fleeing target, or even a moving vehicle. Despite her amazing feat physical prowess, Yor has troubles controlling her strength that she may accidentally demonstrate it in unwilling situations such as in a tennis game where she diced a tennis ball with her precise swing or slap Yuri Briar to the point he bleeds out.
  • Parkour: She is able to swiftly and with minimal effort traverse through, around, and over any composition of city buildings, streets, and landscapes.
  • Intimidation: She displays a fearsome presence when taking care of her targets where they even tremble in fear upon spotting her.
  • Pain Tolerance: Yor was capable of handling the pain that she had in the butt, caused by the wound received from a bullet caused by a surviving member of a criminal organization, Red Circus. However, she struggled alot at displaying her usual attitude due to the pain. She got back to normal when she drank pufferfish poisons, which healed her thanks to her immunity to poison. But this only lasted one night as the next morning the pain is back.
  • Tactical Intuition: While she is often granted intel of a target's location and forces, so she can plan out her attack, there are increasing occasions in which she is drawn into combat spontaneously - most typically opposing threats against Anya - and yet she is still able to expertly navigate and use the environment to benefit her assault and ultimately lead to her overcoming any opponent, either due to specific application of her raw strength or improvised weaponry (such as surpassing Type F's impenetrable armour by using her lipstick as an incendiary to kill him with fire)

Weaknesses[]

  • Poor intellect: Despite being a dangerous and well-trained assassin, Yor is demonstrated to have very poor academic intelligence and social skills, often times zoning out whenever she's in a situation that requires thinking (such as helping her daughter with schoolwork). This was likely caused to her sheltered youth in poverty, where she couldn't afford to go to a school herself. This also causes her to demonstrate her immense prowess in unwilling situations.
  • Cooking: Yor is consistently bad at cooking and usually leaves the task to Loid. When she does attempt to cook dinner, she is unaware of what ingredients to buy and opts to get one of everything instead (including random objects such as cacti), thinking that she can make something as long as there are meat and vegetables. Her attempt at cooking breakfast for the family resulted in meals consisting of messily chopped fish parts and other borderline-inedible substances, prompting Anya to call her a terrible cook. Even the prospect of Yor cooking or tasting her cooking is terrifying to most. Yor's dishes cause any taster, even Loid, to collapse (in one case, sending Loid to the toilet for an entire day). The only individual shown to withstand Yor's cooking is her brother, Yuri, but he violently throws up between bites and even recalls seeing his life flash before his eyes. Despite this, Yuri grew up with no significant health issues; albeit, since Yuri grew up eating her food, his body may have developed a resistance that nobody else would share. This issue affects even Bond, who saw himself die at the hands of Yor's cooking in one of his future visions; her cooking ineptitude transcends simply tasting bad, since regardless of ingredients (even if harmless), if left unsupervised, she turns them into a toxic concoction that can cause illness or even death. The only dish Yor successfully cooked was her late mother's southern stew after Camilla gave her several cooking lessons and helped her recreate it. Her skills with handheld weapons are completely inapplicable in cooking, as while using a knife, she sliced meat razor-thin and destroyed a cutting board. Yor has also badly injured herself using a potato peeler. Despite all this, Yor has a strong desire to improve at cooking, regularly having Camilla teach her despite her frequent injuries and crying in relief when Loid and Anya enjoy her stew instead of immediately collapsing on the floor.
  • Alcohol: Yor has an incredibly low tolerance for alcoholic beverages, becoming intoxicated quickly on a single glass. While she struggles to hide her strength at the best of times, she can become an unintentional destructive force to anyone unlucky enough to be within reach should she strike. She also becomes more emotionally unstable, with the most common consequence of her feeling embarrassed for showing "unladylike" behaviour.

Trivia[]

  • Originally, Yor was going to be named "Yolanda", which is an Eastern European name, but it eventually got shortened to "Yor" as shorter names work better in text bubbles. This means that her full name could possibly be "Yolanda Briar". Likewise, since her brother Yuri has a name of Russian origin, it's likely her and Yuri might be of Russian descent in some capacity.
    • Her name is also similar to "Yoru", the japanese word for "night", which many fans interpreted as a connection to her husband's codename "Twilight". Endo has stated that this was purely a fortunate coincidence.
    • Originally, Endo considered naming her "Eve Tolliver" and "Nei Tolliver". Her codename was always intended to be "Thorn Princess" from the beginning, although Endo would consider giving her the codename "Foil" at one point, but the idea was scrapped.
    • Initially, Yor's job was supposed to that of a janitor, but was later changed into an office job at the City Hall.
    • An early concept Endo had for the character was that she would eventually become madly in love with Loid and attempt to kill Anya as she'd feel she was "getting in their way". The idea ended up getting scrapped in favor of Yor becoming an actual mother figure to Anya and grow to genuinely love her as her daughter.
  • Her rose-themed costume and assassin name, alongside her maiden surname "Briar" may be a reference to "Little Briar Rose", the original German name for the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, and a nod to the rose/flower motif of her alter-ego.
  • Yor was partly inspired by Endo's love for fighting heroines, particularly, Alena from the Dragon Quest series.
  • Yor's stilletos are a nod to the character Henry "The Needle" Faber, from Ken Follett's novel Eye of the Needle, who, likewise, uses the same weapons as her.
  • Tatsuya Endo stated that he finds Yor a difficult character to write due to her status as an assassin, as he has a hard time depicting her as a contract killer while still making her a sympathetic character to the audience. He says wrote the Cruise Adventure Arc in order to make the readers further sympathize with her and highlight the overall moral greyness of her job, pondering what it means to kill during times of war.
  • Yor's earrings are a reference to the earrings worn by Ashe Talton, the main protagonist of Tatsuya Endo's previous one-shot manga, Rengoku no Ashe, whose overall design was also served as a base for Anya.
  • She and Loid were added to the video game Street Fighter 6's for the new Spy x Family crossover.
  • The chair that she sits on the cover of Volume 3 is a La Chaise chair, designed by the designer couple, Charles and Ray Eames, which was chosen by Endo as he thought the curves would fit with Yor's grace and feminity. The chair also features bloodstains on and underneath it, referencing her job as an assassin.
    • In the official music video for Season 2's ending song, "Todome no Ichigeki", the female assassin featured in the video can be seen sitting in the exact same model of chair, possibly as a reference to the cover.
    • Ironically, in Tatsuya Endo's initial rough drafts for the cover, Yor was going to be sitting in a Heart Cone Chair, by Verner Panton, the chair that would, eventually be reused for, her love rival, Fiona Frost's cover in Volume 6.
