Yorinobu Arasaka (Japan: 荒坂 頼宣) is a major character in the Cyberpunk franchise. He debuted in the 1990 tabletop role-playing game Cyberpunk 2020, where he serves as a major protagonist, and returns as the main antagonist of the 2020 action-adventure RPG video game Cyberpunk 2077.
He is the younger son of Saburo Arasaka and heir to the Arasaka Corporation who, in stark contrast to the rest of his family and other corpos in the company, disapproves of his father's vision and actively seeks to abolish the family's influence on the world.
He is voiced by Hideo Kimura in the English dub and Hiroshi Shirokuma in the Japanese version of the games.
Biography[]
Yorinobu was born into the Arasaka family, as second child of Saburo Arasaka. Initially ignorant to the outside world due to his sheltered life, this changed when he learned of his father's plan to dominate the world through the power he held using the family's company. In response, Yorinobu escaped to the streets of Tokyo, where he founded the Steel Dragons from a gang of nomads in order to dismantle the Araska Corporation and expose his father's heinous schemes. He was also involved in espionage during the Fourth Corporate War, having joined forced with both national allies and Militech to attack Arasaka's operations.
After the war concluded, Yorinobu realized that Araska could only be dismantled from within, and sought out the help of his sister, Hanako, to return to the family and subsequently rejoin the company. Here, Yorinobu took control of the Taka faction of Arasaka to rival his father's, gaining allies from both within the company and outside of it. He also employed Adam Smasher as a bodyguard and enforcer in his quest to take down the corporation for good.
Cyberpunk 2077[]
By the game's events, Yorinobu has fled his home to Night City after stealing a prototype of Arasaka's Relic, a device capable of uploading engrams into the bodies of others. When Saburo discovered his plans and confronts him personally, Yorinobu ended up killing him in a fit of rage and frames Saburo's bodyguard Goro Takemura, for the deed. With his father dead, Yorinobu was left with complete control of the corporation thanks to his status as heir, using his influence to instigate another Corporate War with Militech and remove executives loyal to his father.
Depending on V's choices, Yorinobu can either successfully destabilize Arasaka as a whole, or be overthrown by Hanako with the assistance of V. If the latter occurs, his consciousness is erased when his sister uploads Saburo's engram into his mind, allowing their father to retake control of his empire and secure its grip on the world that had previously been held by him.
In "The Tower" ending achieved by completing Phantom Liberty, Hanako and Takemura launch an assault on Arasaka Tower to depose of Yorinobu, as they do in the "The Devil" ending, but without V's assistance, the attack fails and Hanako is killed in the process; Yorinobu subsequently frames Takemura for his sister's murder as well. By the time V awakens from their two-year coma, Arasaka has retreated from Night City to refocus on its home operations in Japan. Yorinobu is mentioned to have lost his position as CEO of the company by the board of directors, and his ultimate fate is left uncertain.
