Do you remember the first time when you were a child that you stood up and walked on your own? If you don't remember doing it, and yet you did it, it means that you weren't conscious of it at the time. So how did you know how to do it? The answer is all humans are born already knowing how to stand up. Just as birds are born knowing how to fly, and fish are born already knowing how to swim. It's because of what we call instinct. All living creatures use instinct to obtain their natural powers when the time comes that they need them.
~ Yoruichi Shihoin
People discover their true, inner powers when they want to protect something. Their own lives, status, honor, loved ones, a principle...a fierce desire to protect is the key.
~ Yoruichi Shihoin

Yoruichi Shihōin, also known as the Flash Goddess, is a supporting character in the Bleach franchise. She is the former captain of the 2nd Division of the Gotei 13, as well as the former commander of the Onmitsukidō. Having abandoned her command of both positions, she works with Kisuke Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi, based in the Urahara Shop out in the Human World.

In her human form, she is voiced by Satsuki Yukino in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Wendee Lee in the English version of the anime. In Bleach - Thousand Year Blood War, she is voiced by Anairis Quiñones, who also voices Rumi "Mirko/Miruko" Usagiyama from My Hero Academia, but for only episode 388, after which subsequent appearances reverted to her original English dub performer Wendee Lee, with her also voicing child TK in the original Digimon series, Chisato Hasegawa in The Testament of Sister New Devil Shinmai Maou no Testament and Faye Valentine in Cowboy Bebop.

In her cat form, she is voiced by Shirō Saitō in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Terrence Stone in the English version of the anime.

Origin[]

Yoruichi was born many centuries ago in the Soul Society as a princess of the Tenshiheisōban (天賜兵装番, lit. "House of Godly Gears") and lived in the Shihōin Clan Mansion. Her only friends from a young age were Kisuke Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi. Some years later, Yoruichi was positioned as the 22nd generational head of the Shihōin family, and selected to become the Corps Commander of the Onmitsukidō, the Special Forces of the Soul Society. She then went on to make history by uniting this faction with the 2nd Division of the 13 Court Guards.

As the 2nd Division Captain, Yoruichi took on a young Soi Fon as her protege. When an opening came in the 12th Division, she recommended Kisuke. Soi Fon objected, but Yoruichi only teased Soi Fon about liking him when she followed him to write a report.

After several of the Captains and Lieutenants had gone missing in the Soul Society, it was later discovered that those commanders had been attacked and infected in some way by Hollows. Unknown to her at the time, they were the victims of a wicked trap set by Sousuke Aizen, the then Lieutenant of the 5th Division. When She learned that Kisuke and Tessai had been framed for the attacks, Yoruichi wore a mask as she rescued them both during the trail. They then fled to Earth with the Hollowfied Soul Reapers. Soi Fon was left behind so she wouldn't be implicated.

Powers & Abilities[]

Yoruichi Cat

Yoruichi's cat form

Yoruichi is a very diverse character, and she possesses many powers and abilities that set her apart from others.

As a soul reaper, Yoruichi has a number of natural advantages over human beings and other creatures from the living world. Firstly, souls such as hers don't age like mortals do, and are capable of staying in their physical prime for at least a thousand years. Secondly, as a soul, Yoruichi is completely undetectable by any of the senses that regular humans possess.

Transformation[]

It's unknown when Yoruichi adopted this skill, but she has been the only Shinigami who has the ability to transform into a black cat and still retain her ability to speak. She lived in this form on Earth for as long as she has been on the run after she and Kisuke left the Soul Society. While in this form her voice deepens and she is mistaken as a man. This skill makes it difficult both identify or track her movements. Due to her habit to be in cat form, which is nude, when she shifts back into her true form, she can forget or disregard about the fact that she is still naked. But rather than embarrassed, she is often shameless.

Yoruichi's Techniques[]

Growing up as the head of the royal Shohoin clan, she has been trained in combat skills of the Shinigami. She still prefers to more hand-to-hand style fighting.

  • Hakuda (白打, hakuda): Hakuda is one of the four forms of martial-arts that is taught within the Soul Society. Only masters of this technique are accepted among the Onmitsukidō. Being the former Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukidō, she has mastered all the skills to the degree of being able to fight armed Shinigami and giant Espada level Arrancar.
  • Kidō (鬼道, kidō): Kidō is a form of demon magic that is used in combat by the Soul Reapers. There are two forms of Kidō. Hadō for direct attacks, and Bakudō for support.
  • Flash Step (瞬歩, shunpo): Flash Step is a high speed technique used by the Soul Reapers. Soifon is most likely the fastest captain currently in the 13 Court Guard. Yoruichi talent with this skill is legendary in the Soul Society, and it earned her the name of "Flash Goddess" (瞬神, shunshin).
  • Utsusemi (空蝉, utsusemi): She can use a variation of Flash Step called Utsusemi. This creates such a sudden burst of speed that it leaves a tangible after-image behind. Though she has taught these skills to others, no one has ever matched her speed.

Trivia[]

  • Yoroichi seems to have either misplaced her zanpukto or had Kisuke put it away. Either way she seems to prefer hand-to-hand combat over swordsmanship.
  • In the English dub, Yoruichi's true form was voiced by Wendee Lee, but she was recast with Anairis Quiñones; however, after only one episode, the decision to recast was reversed due to some unclear reason.
    • There was controversy at the perception of dismissing a woman of colour for the benefit of a Caucasian woman for a role that was interpreted as a woman of colour, although Yoruichi herself isn't actually a woman of colour in the sense of American standards.
