Hero Overview

Those who tread the path of evil shall face judgement eventually.
~ Yoshimitsu

Yoshimitsu is a major character in the Tekken franchise. First introduced in the original Tekken, he is one of the few characters to return for all subsequent sequels in the series.

He was initially a cyborg ninja from the Manji Clan known for stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, having entered the first King of Iron Fist Tournament as a distraction to allow his clan members to steal Heihachi Mishima's funding. However, after the rest of the Manji Clan were slaughtered by Bryan Fury, Yoshimitsu dedicated himself to hunting him down.

He is voiced by Tomokazu Seki.

Appearance[]

Yoshimitsu's appearance throughout the series usually differs to mask his true identity, thus making him unknown to the public. In each game:

  • Tekken - Traditional ninja with Hannya mask.
  • Tekken 2 - Traditional ninja with Oni mask and farming hat.
  • Tekken 3 & Tag Tournament - The first true instance of the iconic skeletal cyborg ninja look he has now. His mask can only be described as a fusion of a Xenomorph skull and a mushroom, and he wields lightsabers.
  • Tekken 4 - A skeleton wearing insect-like armor resembling both a dragonfly (with long, slender translucent insect wings) and a rhino beetle (general armor and helmet motif).
  • Tekken 5 - A skeletal samurai, referencing his ancestors. His head resembles a skull encased in a transparent dome.
  • Tekken 6 - A skeletal demon wearing a straw hat.
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 - The first time he loses his skeletal aspects, going back to a more traditional demonic samurai look.
  • Tekken 7 - An alien-like octopus bio-armor, complete with tentacles sprouting from his head and shoulders.
  • Tekken 8 - A sleek fusion of his iconic Tekken 3 design with elements of his ancestor's design that embodies the term "past meets present". His new armor is undoubtedly a modified version of his armor from Tekken 3, but with much rougher and more intimidating features reminiscent of his ancestor's "demon" look from Soulcalibur VI, along with a red scarf.

Personality[]

Yoshimitsu's benevolence has not changed since the first King of Iron Fist Tournament. He enjoys helping people who are in need, as seen with Law and his family (Yoshimitsu's ending) in Tekken. He is also became the helper of Dr. Bosconovitch prior to Bryan's betrayal towards the Manji clan in Tekken 5.

Powers & Abilities[]

Fighting Style[]

Yoshimitsu vs

Yoshimitsu uses his ninjitsu skills to hold his ground against Bryan Fury in Tekken 8.

Yoshimitsu's fighting style incorporates a blend of Ninjutsu, samurai-style sword attacks derived from Kenjutsu and Battoujutsu, special stances, and supernatural moves.

Stances[]

Due to his fighting style, Yoshimitsu is one of the first characters to incorporate the use of stances, allowing him a variety of tactics and mobility for different fighters and situations.

One stance Yoshimitsu utilizes is Meditation, where he turns his back to his opponent and heals himself. Another is his Indian Stance, where he heals himself while sitting cross-legged on the ground, and yet another of his stances is his Manji Dragonfly, where he rotates his sword in his mechanical left hand like the blades of a helicopter to levitate in midair.

He also has a Flea stance, where he stands on his sword by placing the tip into the ground and wrapping his hands and feet around the hilt, and Kincho stance, where he will yell "Hissatsu" (meaning "Certain kill" in Japanese), and threaten to pull out his wakizashi. If a certain button is pressed, Yoshimitsu will take the wakizashi out of its case and inflict damage upon his opponent as he pulls it out.

Indian Stance was introduced in Tekken 2, Flea Stance and Meditation were introduced in Tekken 3, Manji Dragonfly was introduced in Tekken 5, and Kincho stance was introduced in Tekken 6.

From Tekken 6 onward, Yoshimitsu can now sheathe his sword and fight without it, and he can also use his second sword in some of his attacks.

Story[]

As the leader of the Manji Party, Yoshimitsu dedicated himself to providing food, medical assistance, and shelter to the ever-increasing number of political refugees around the world. Using advanced Manji Ninjutsu Arts as his fighting style, Yoshimitsu entered the first King of Iron Fist Tournament as a distraction, to allow the Manji to steal the tournament's funds unobserved. Kunimitsu was a former member of the Manji clan.

During the time of Tekken 2, Yoshimitsu learned that the scientist named Dr. Bosconovitch, who once saved his life, had been abducted by Kazuya Mishima. To rescue Bosconovitch, he entered the second King of Iron Fist Tournament, and was able to save his friend. Later in Tekken 3, Yoshimitsu entered the tournament upon learning that his friend, Dr. Bosconovitch, needs Ancient Ogre's blood to live.

Unfortunately, with a constant lack of necessary funding and manpower, Yoshimitsu was unsure about the future of his organization. When Yoshimitsu heard about the fourth King of Iron Fist Tournament, he envisioned a union between the Manji Party and the Mishima Zaibatsu. With this dream in mind, Yoshimitsu decides to enter the Tournament immediately. He must defeat Heihachi Mishima at any cost. At the end of the fourth King of Iron Fist Tournament, Yoshimitsu broke into the Mishima Zaibatsu vaults and stole the money for his own. During this operation, Yoshimitsu notices the fallen Bryan Fury and takes him to Dr. Bosconovitch.

Before the events of Tekken 5, Yoshimitsu manages to break into the Mishima Zaibatsu's vault, where he finds an injured Bryan Fury and helps him escape. One month later, when Yoshimitsu visits Dr. Bosconovitch's lab, he finds his comrades dead. This was Bryan's thanks. "He shall pay for what he has done," says Yoshimitsu. Learning Bryan will fight in the fifth King of Iron Fist Tournament, Yoshimitsu sharpens his sword and enters the fray.

Trying to avenge his fallen Manji clan comrades, while going after Bryan, Yoshimitsu realizes that his sword is weakening. His sword is a cursed blade. By killing evil doers and villains the sword would retain its power, otherwise the cursed sword will make the user go insane. Yoshimitsu realizes that he can no longer use his old sword and decides to use another blade that seals the properties of the cursed sword. He then decides to enter the sixth King of Iron Fist Tournament.

In Tekken 7, with Heihachi reinstated as the CEO of the Mishima Zaibatsu, Yoshimitsu sensed something bad was afoot, and so entered the seventh King of Iron Fist Tournament as way of confirming his suspicions. His infiltration point would be the Mishima dojo. It seemed like the perfect location for collecting intelligence, and even though the building would act as the arena for his tournament match, Yoshimitsu approached from the air just in case. When he entered the Mishima dojo, the place looked as though it had been hit by a typhoon. Waiting for Yoshimitsu in the gloom was a charming young martial artist. Yoshimitsu could not say for sure, but he thought he seemed a little "tense...". Though his looks were enchanting, he also seemed dangerous, so the ninja braced himself for battle.

In Tekken 8, Yoshimitsu is an inheritor of the Manji Ninjutsu and current head of the Manji Clan, a group of chivalrous thieves active since the Sengoku period. Six months ago, Yoshimitsu accepted a request from an investor of the refugee relief project. The task was to find archives that contained information on the past doings of the Mishima Zaibatsu. After analyzing information that his clan members had gathered, Yoshimitsu is led to an old, underground cave. Legend has it that the Mishimas once used it for exorcisms. He scans the area using the technology built into his reinforced armor and continues down a dilapidated path. In the recesses of the cave, Yoshimitsu discovers the archives he has been looking for. Just then, the faint demonic aura that had been surrounding the archives resonates with Yoshimitsu's cursed blade and causes a wave of evil to surge forth. The Cursed Blade Yoshimitsu, passed down between heads of the Manji Clan for generations, is corrupted with an unquenchable bloodlust that eventually drives its wielder insane. In the blink of an eye, the blade infiltrates Yoshimitsu's mind and amplifies his desire for destruction. Yoshimitsu quickly stabs himself with the blade so he can feed its thirst, yet the blade becomes even more uncontrollable. After he returns, the clan elders teach Yoshimitsu how to suppress the cursed sword's malevolent will, even if only barely. Still, his cursed blade has called out to him ever since that day."If the owner of the voice I hear is the source of the sword's uncontrollable nature, then I will cut it off at its root." Yoshimitsu's ally, Dr. Bosconovitch, provides him with the latest reinforced armor before sending him off on his journey out of Secret Manji Village to follow wherever his blade leads him.
