Hero Overview

In the land of Hyrule, there echoes a legend. A legend held dearly by the Royal Family that tells of a boy... A boy who, after battling evil and saving Hyrule, crept away from the land that had made him a legend... Done with the battles he once waged across time, he embarked on a journey. A secret and personal journey... A journey in search of a beloved and invaluable friend... A friend with whom he parted ways when he finally fulfilled his heroic destiny and took his place among legends...
~ Majora's Mask Prologue
A sword wields no strength unless the hand that holds it has courage. You may be destined to become the hero of legend...but your current power would disgrace the proud green of the hero's tunic you wear. You must use your courage to seek power...and find it you must. Only then will you become the hero for whom this world despairs.
~ Young Link as The Hero's Shade to The Hero of Twilight
You have at last mastered all of the hidden skills. Although I accepted life as the hero, I could not convey the lessons of that life to those who came after. At last, I have eased those regrets. You who have marched through countless foes, each mightier then the last... You who now gaze to the future with vision unclouded... Surely you can restore Hyrule to its stature of yore as the chosen land of the gods...Farwell! Go and do not falter, my child!
~ Young Link's last words before he finally rests in peace knowing his descendant is ready to succeed him.

Young Link, or simply Kid Link or Child Link by the fans, is the younger incarnation of Link in The Legend of Zelda franchise.

He appears as the main protagonist in both The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask and also appears as a supporting character in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as the Hero's Shade and as a posthumous character in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Outside of the main series he has appeared as a playable character in both the Super Smash Bros. series (appearing as such in both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate) and the Hyrule Warriors series (being a DLC character in Hyrule Warriors Legends and an unlockable character in Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition.

He is voiced by Fujiko Takimoto (who also voiced Toon Link and Link from The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past/Four Swords and in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap) on the Game Boy Advance, the Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo 3DS respectively while his adult form and his Fierce Deity form are voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama who also voices the anti-hero BlackWarGreymon from the Japanese version of Digimon Adventure 02.

Biography

Ocarina of Time

Link is a young orphan who is raised as one of the “Children of the forest,” also known as Kokiri. Unlike the other kids, Link does not have a fairy companion and is an outcast because of it. One day the Great Deku Tree sends a fairy named Navi to retrieve Link and bring him to the tree. Link arrives at the Deku Tree and he asks link to break a cruse that has been cast on them. Link attempts to save the tree from monsters inside it but the tree was dying anyways. Upon defeating the monsters, the Deku Tree tells Link about the Triforce and tells him to go to Hyrule Castle. There, he meets Princess Zelda and she sends him to collect three Spiritual Stones to save Hyrule. Link successfully obtains the Stones and travels to the Temple of Time.

He enters it with the help of the Stones and the Ocarina of Time, inside Link was able to retrieve the Master Sword off of the Pedestal of Time. However, due to him drawing the Sword off the Pedestal, the temple imprisoned Link for seven years until his body matures more. Meanwhile Ganondor has taken control of Hyrule and the Triforce of Power. Seven years have gone by and the Sage of Light, Rauru, awakens Link who is now the Hero of Time. Link goes on an adventure to cleanse the land of Ganondorf by trying to awaken the Sages. Link later meets a character named Sheik who guides him for awhile during his quest. Link first returns to the Kokiri Forest to discover that his friends have not grown up yet. The Deku Tree reveals to Link that the Kokiri do not grow up and Link is in fact Hylian who was orphaned during the wars. Link’s mother had been wounded and fled to the Kokiri Forest and placed Link under the Deku Tree’s care who senses that Link is the child of destiny. Link later gains the ability to travel back and forth to two time periods that makes him either young or old with the Master Sword. He continues his adventure in searching for the seven sages and eventually returns to the Temple of Time. There, Shiek reveals to

Link that she is actually Zelda and she is also the last sage. She gives Link a Magical Light Arrow to defeat Ganondorf. Zelda is then kidnapped by Ganondorf, and with the help of the other six sages, Link was able to go after her. Link defeats Ganondorf and he and Zelda barely escape as the castle crumbles. Ganondorf transforms into a more powerful form calling himself Ganon. Link fights Ganon with the help of Zelda and the sages, they were able to imprison Ganon in the Sacred Realm. At the end, Zelda plays the Ocarina of Time and turns Link back into child form and Navi leaves him. Later Link sneaks into the castle to visit the young princess, the two look at each other and the game ends.

Child Timeline

Majora's Mask

TBA

Between Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess

What exactly happened to Young Link in between these two games is unclear however what is known is that he somehow passed away and was stuck living with many regrets, ultimately leading him to become a restless and regretful spirit looking for a chance to pass on what he couldn't in life.

Twilight Princess

In this game what's left of Young Link appears as a supporting character called Hero's Shade, a restless spirit who teaches his descendant (The Hero Twilight; this game's incarnation of Link) combat techniques that he never managed to pass on in life. After teaching Link everything he knows his spirit is finally put to rest.

Adult Timeline

Wind Waker

Young Link has passed away by the time of this game's events however he is viewed as a legendary hero by the generations that followed him and it has become a tradition for Hylian boys to wear the Hero's clothes (a green tunic and white tights in a similar vein to Young Link's Kokiri attire) when they come of age, as was such for Toon Link at the start of the game.

Other Media

Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Young Link is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee where he is unlocked by either completing Classic Mode or Adventure Mode with 10 characters, including two Zelda characters (i.e. Link, Princess Zelda or Ganondorf), or by completing 500 VS. Mode matches. Once the player has fulfilled these requirements they will face Young Link on the Great Bay stage. Victory means unlocking him.

His fighting style is a modified duplicate of Link's. His reach is shorter than adult Link's, but his arrows can set opponents on fire and momentarily stun them. Additionally, Young Link has more control over his boomerang than Link. His Hookshot is also shorter but can still grapple on to edges. His Spin Attack is faster than Link's, hits multiple times and draws in opponents close to it. Young Link uses a Deku Shield; however, it does not burn when it comes in contact with fire. Like Link, his shield can block projectiles when standing still. Unlike Link, Young Link can do wall jumps.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Young Link once again returns as an unlockable character in this game. He can be unlocked either by completing Classic Mode after unlocking Simon Belmont, by playing a certain number of Vs. matches or finally through the World of Light adventure mode where he can be found in World of Darkness section.

For his newly added Final Smash Young Link is given the Triforce Slash which originally belonged to Link himself in Brawl and 3DS/Wii U before having it replaced by Breath of the Wild's Light Arrows in Ultimate.

Hyrule Warriors

Young Link appears as a DLC character in Hyrule Warriors Legends however was instead added as an unlockable character in the Nintendo Switch released Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition where he can be unlocked in Adventure Mode by successfully completing the battle on G-9.

Young Link is a dark type warrior who uses Masks primarily as his move set gimmick while also wielding Majora's Mask rendition of the Kokiri sword.

Mask Transformations

Deku Link

As Deku Link, Young Link can fire bubbles at balloons or enemies from afar and can perform a spin attack to harm his foes or stun them for a certain period of time. He can also use Deku Flowers to achieve flight for a short time and drop Deku Nuts upon anything below him.

Goron Link

As Goron Link, Young Link assumes Darmani III's role by rolling to attack the enemies with spike attacks. He can also participate in Goron Race organized by Goron Elder's son.

Zora Link

As Zora Link, Young Link assumes Mikau's role after Mikau (in spirit form) encourages him to help Lulu to regain her voice again. He can attack the enemies, swim in the water, he can use his electric attacks to destroy these enemies.

Giant Link

As Giant Link, Young Link grows into a titan and can use his sword to attack Twinmold in the Nintendo 64 version of Majora's Mask. However in the Nintendo 3DS remake, Giant Link can destroy Twinmold and his baby insectoid monsters with his bare hands instead. Giant Link is used only in the Stone Temple Boss fight (as seen in both consoles).

Fierce Deity Link

As Fierce Deity Link, Young Link takes the shape of his adult self, but his size is much taller than normal, he is used in the Boss Fights and he can be used in the glitches in the consoles without an Boss Battle.
