To us, praise and rewards are a light drizzle. Even if we were underground thieves with no honor, we must stake our lives to prevent this murder.
~ Yukichi Fukuzawa to Armed Detective Agency members.

Yukichi Fukuzawa ,also known as the Silver Wolf, is a major character in the Bungo Stray Dogs franchise. He is the president of the Armed Detective Agency and a former assassin for the government. He is a fictionalized version of the Japanese educator, philosopher, writer, entrepreneur and samurai with the same name.

He voiced by Rikiya Koyama in Japanese and by Jamieson Price in English.

Appearance[]

Fukuzawa is a 45-year-old tall man who almost always has a stern expression on his face. He has long silver hair, which ends just above his shoulder, and metallic blue eyes, which appear to have small wrinkles and eyebags under them.

He is always seen wearing a green yukata under a black haori (a traditional Japanese thigh-length kimono-style jacket, commonly worn by men) with golden borders with a zigzag pattern, and zori (flat sandals) with white tabi (toe-divided socks).

Personality[]

As expected of a leader, Fukuzawa is a serious man who keeps a calm composure, even around his adversaries. As leader, he prioritizes the lives of his subordinates before anything else, like when he Atsushi was abducted by the Poet Mafia when a bounty was on his head, and he wanted the others to focus on saving him more than their work. He also threatened an assassin who attempted to kill him to only target him and him alone rather than involve the Agency.

As one-third of the constituents of the Tripartite Framework, Fukuzawa is willing to maintain peace and order in Yokohama. He's the type of leader that does not care for rewards and just sees them as "light drizzle" to their primary endeavor of preventing chaos to fall upon the city. Even when afflicted with the Cannibalism virus, Fukuzawa issued out the orders to his subordinates not to fight the Port Mafia in protecting him, lest it disrupt the balance and tranquility of Yokohama.

Despite rarely smiling, it's hinted that he has a soft spot for cute things. When Kyōka Izumi begged him to let her stay with the Agency with a cute face, he takes her in on the spot. His most noticeable soft spot is the one he has for cats; he even keeps treats for them under his sleeves whenever he comes across one. His former partner, Ougai Mori, is well aware of his fondness for them, even teased Fukuzawa during their confrontation if he was still "talking to cats".

In his younger years, Fukuzawa was still a serious person but seemed to show more emotion compared to now, especially towards Ranpo Edogawa. 12 years before the events of the series, he was being a bodyguard for Ranpo and their bond was forming into a father son relationship. When he saved Ranpo from almost being killed by the criminal group, V, he slapped Ranpo for being reckless and told him that despite how incredibly intelligent he is, he's still just a child who has a lot left to learn.

Likewise, Fukuzawa is the entire reason why Ranpo can act as a functional human being. Before he met Fukuzawa, Ranpo felt disconnected from society because of his extraordinary deduction skills, and it was until Fukuzawa told him he was an ability user that Ranpo became comfortable with himself.

Ability[]

All Men Are Equal: Fukuzawa's special ability, All Men Are Equal, allows him to suppress the abilities of those in the Armed Detective Agency. According to Dazai, it can "adjust the power of their abilities so that they may be controlled." In order for it to be activated, an ability user needs to pass a test to prove that they have the strength to save people, there for, they can become members of the Detective Agency and Fukuzawa can make sure their ability can be controlled.

Skills[]

Martial Arts: Fukuzawa's proficiency in martial arts since a younger age are unmatched, as seen at his past before founding the agency. He possesses enough strength and reflexes to take on a group of assassins. As such, he is noted to have never lost a match to his mentee, Kunikida, and keep a intense combat against Mori even facing his unpredictable fighting style.

Trivia[]

  • Much like his real-life counterpart, Fukuzawa is almost never seen wearing Western-style clothes, preferring traditional Japanese ones.
  • Fukuzawa has never been seen smiling in the manga until chapter 80. However, he does so in the anime directly at the end of the Cannibalism events after he congratulated his subordinates for their work.
  • When the President is in custody, Fukuchi reminds Fukuzawa about a countryside woman named Kin, an implied mutual friend of the two. The woman may be a reference to the real-life Fukuzawa's wife, Okin.
  • Fukuzawa was unaware of the fact that he had an ability before he founded the Armed Detective Agency.
  • Fukuzawa founded the Agency so he can make use of Ranpo's talent.
