Yukio Terada, born as Daejin Kim, is a supporting character in the Yakuza Saga of Sega's Like a Dragon (formerly Yakuza in the west) franchise.
He is a supporting character in the 2005 video game Yakuza (and its 2016 remake Yakuza Kiwami) and one of two main antagonists (alongside Ryuji Goda) of Yakuza 2 and (its 2017 remake Yakuza Kiwami 2), as well as a minor character in Yakuza Kiwami 2's Majima Saga.
Originally the Omi Alliance's chief of headquarters, at the end of the first game, he instead became the fifth Chairman of the Tojo Clan, as was granted by its fourth chairman, Kazuma Kiryu. In Yakuza 2, however, it is revealed he is in fact the leader of the newest branch of the Jingweon Mafia, a Korean mob syndicate who suffered a massacre from the hands of the Tojo Clan 26 years prior to the game, and so he wants to get revenge against the Tojo by planting 33 bombs around Kamurocho, the city where the Tojo mostly operate. However, when his Omi Alliance blood brother Ryo Takashima, whom he was conspiring with as they both had desires of abolishing the Tojo Clan, betrays him when he deems him no longer necessary to his plans, Terada instead gets one over on Takashima by activatiing another bomb, which is later revealed to be a red herring, on Kamurocho Hills, which scares Takashima and allows Ryuji Goda to kill him, which ends up saving Kiryu's life.
Biography[]
Past[]
Terada was originally part of the Korean organized crime group known as the Jingweon Mafia, when he was known by his birthname of Daejin Kim. On December 25, 1980, Kim and the rest of his Jingweon brethren were attacked in a raid orchestrated by the patriarch of the Tojo Clan's Dojima Family, Sohei Dojima, who had sent his two top officers, Shintaro Kazama and Futoshi Shimano, to carry out the massacre. While the vast majority of Jingweon was killed, mostly at the hands of the ruthless Shimano, Kim and another Jingweon man named Yeongmin Ji (who would later change his name to Wataru Kurahashi) were spared by Kazama.
Kazama begged the Omi Alliance's Fifth Chairman Jin Goda to look after Terada, after which Terada joined the Omi and eventually became their chief of headquarters.
Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami[]
At Shintaro Kazama's request, Terada probed his adoptive son Akira Nishikiyama after he had fallen into villainy and started to want to gain full control of the Tojo Clan by any means necessary. Terada told Nishikiyama about ten billion yen that has recently gone missing from the Tojo Clan. When Haruka Sawamura is kidnapped by Goro Majima, he frees her and tells her that her pendant was worth ten billion yen and told her to tell Kazuma Kiryu this.
Terada is seen entering a meeting between him, Shimano and Snake Flower Triad leader Lau Ka Long where they discuss how to split the ten billion yen once it is found, with Shimano offering to gvie Terada two billion for being the one to reveal to Nishikiyama about the ten billion in the first place.
Terada later appears when Kiryu and Haruka go to visit Shintaro Kazama near the end of the game, where Harka recognises him as the man who freed her. When Futoshi Shimano and his Shimano family attack the docks they are at, Terada assists in fighting them. When Shimano tosses a grenade towards Haruka and Kazama, Terada shoots Shimano dead, which also means he got revenge against one of the men who were responsible for wiping out his brethren over 20 years ago.
When Kiryu goes to face Jingu at the Millenium Tower, Terada arrives and tries to help Kiryu, but he is stopped when the Omi Alliance is revealed to be colluding with Jingu (this is later revealed in Yakuza 2 to be specifically the work of Ryuji Goda and his Go-Ryu Family). After Kiryu defeats Jingu, as well as his sworn brother Nishikiyama, and the former's plans are ultimately thwarted, Kiryu is posthumously requested by the Tojo Clan's Third Chairman Masaru Sera to become the clan's Fourth Chairman, but he retires on his first day and names Terada as the Fifth Chairman, with his sworn brother in the Omi Alliance, Ryo Takashima, taking his role as the chief of headquarters.
Yakuza 2/Yakuza Kiwami 2[]
Majima Saga[]
In 2006, Terada hosts the Tojo Clan Reformation project, where which ever family in the Tojo Clan brings in the most profits will have their family's patriarch be promoted to the clan's captain. The top two families are the Uematsu Family in first and Ibuchi Family in second, with Akinobu Uematsu looking to be next Tojo Clan captain. That is, until Goro Majima arrives and gets his men to bring in a whole load of cash that Majima gained, which blows both Uematsu and Ibuchi's families out of the water. Terada puts a halt to his project. Majima later expresses to Ryota Kawamura that he suspects the whole reformation plan was a nepotistic scheme on Terada's part to get one of his allies into the high ranks of the Tojo Clan.
After Majima defeats Kei Ibuchi, who had Kawamura murder Uematsu and an Omi Alliance executive for his own plans, Terada criticizes himself for failing to see Ibuchi's true intentions. He and Majima go to the Omi Alliance in order to make amends for one of Majima's men murdering one of their executives.
Main Story[]
Terada visits Kiryu and warns him about an upcoming war between the Tojo and the Omi Alliance, and states he wants to subvert it by sealing a pact of peace between the Tojo and the Omi. However they are ambushed by Omi men who shoot and seemingly kill Terada. In his "final" moments he hands Kiryu a letter which he later delivers to Jin Goda.
However, this peace oath was merely a scheme which Terada correctly predicted would lead to Ryuji Goda declaring a war between the Tojo Clan and the Omi Alliance, with him hoping to conquer both of them. He also reveals his history as a member of the Jingweon Mafia and his true identity as Daejin Kim. He reveals that he was behind the 33 bombs placed around Kamurocho and that he had planted a 34th on Kamurocho Hills after Yeongmin Ji was killed by Jiro Kawara. After Kiryu defeats Terada and his Jingweon men in a fight, Ryo Takashima comes in and reveals he had been working with Terada as they have both been wanting to destroy the Tojo Clan. However, Takashima betrays Terada by shooting him, saying that he is no longer necessary for his plans, and reveals his ultimate plan is to become the Omi Alliance's sixth chairman, absorb the remainder of the Tojo Clan, and use the Jingweon to spread into the mainland. Terada states he knew Takashima was shady and that he would betray him. He tells Kiryu to trust him as he activates the 34th bomb, which frightens Takashima and leads to him being shot dead by Ryuji. After Kiryu and Ryuji have one final fight, it is revealed the last bomb Terada planted was a fake as the fuse was already removed, leading Kiryu to believe he meant what he said about his feeling towards Kazama.
