“ | Shall we gamble? | „ |
~ Yumeko's catchphrase. |
“ | Gambling is fun because both people feel pain at the same time. So why did you try to make it so that you alone felt the pain in this game? You do not enjoy gambling. You simply wish to die. You're the type of person I hate the most. To speak frankly... you piss me off. | „ |
~ Yumeko to Midari Ikishima. |
Yumeko Jabami (蛇喰 夢子) is the main protagonist of the 2014 psychological thriller manga series Kakegurui and its 2018 anime adaptation.
She's a transfer student at Hyakkaou Private Academy and the classmate of Ryota Suzui and Mary Saotome. Yumeko’s family is aligned with the family of Kirari Momobami that challenges her for Hyakkaou Private Academy.
She is voiced by Saori Hayami in Japanese (who also voiced Shinobu Kocho as well Erika Harlacher did from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Yor Forger from Spy x Family, Himawari Uzumaki from Boruto - Naruto Next Generations, and Yamato from One Piece) and Erika Harlacher in English (who also voiced Kurapika from Hunter x Hunter, Elizabeth Liones from Seven Deadly Sins, also Shinobu Kocho as well Saori Hayami and Ann Takamaki from Persona 5). In the live-action drama, she's played by Minami Hamabe. In the Sentai English dub, she is voiced by Estelle Link.
Appearance[]
Yumeko is a beautiful young girl with long, waist length black hair styled in hime-cut. Her usually burgundy eyes become red whenever she becomes excited. She wears the standard female Hyakkaou Private Academy issued uniform. She also wears a ring around her left thumb, pink/peach tinted lip balm, and sports plain fingernails.
Personality[]
Initially she appeared modest, but shows a maniacal passion for high stakes gambling, as shown when her eyes glow red, which they often do. In spite of her dislike for games where the outcome is predetermined, she can quickly deduce how such games are being manipulated in her opponents' favor and, by doing so, she devises strategies that more often than not turn the tables on them.
She is also portrayed as a kind, intelligent, and happy girl when she's with her friends. She gets desatisfied by cheaters or by anyone she considers arrogant. Despite knowing when someone's cheating, she'll still gladly play with them with no hesitation in order to expose their deceptive tactics.
Her love for gambling is so intense that when she really gets into a game, her eyes are shown to glow red as she becomes insanely ecstatic and manipulative, psychologically and sadistically tormenting her opponents when they cheat. Despite her slightly disturbing behavior while playing, this doesn't take away from the fact she cares about her friends Mary and Ryota, as she's shown to be happy to spend time with the both of them.
Trivia[]
- Aside from her psychotic gambling addiction, Yumeko is a very pleasant person to be around. That is unless you anger her by tainting a gamble with trickery or try to back out before there's a winner. Then she simply ignores your existence.
- Yumeko states that she has very little stamina. Something she mentions when climbing the stairs in the Tower of Doors.
- The first volume of the manga reveals that Yumeko lives alone due to the fact that her parents passed away from unknown causes and her older sister is currently being hospitalized.
- It was also revealed in the same volume that despite having no other relatives and not being employed in a job, Yumeko was stated to be incredibly independently wealthy. As seen where she manages to easily pay for her sister's hospitalization along with her private treatment in a specialized university ward for a prolonged period of time. This heavily implies that Yumeko either possesses a large inheritance from her parents or acquired her wealth somewhere else.
- This is one of the fewest times where Japanese voice actor Saori Hayami and English voice actor Erika Harlacher voiced the same character. The other characters they voiced together were Emi Igawa from Your Lie in April and Shinobu Kocho from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
- Her live-action actor, Minami Hamabe, also played Emma, Mia Fey (as a child) in the live-action adaptation of The Promised Neverland and Ace Attorney respectively.
