Biography[]
Past[]
Yuri was born in 1160 in a poor village in Faerghus, West. His mother was a prostitute, and his father's identity was unknown.
At some point in his childhood, his family invited an old man to nurse him and regain his health. As a token of gratitude, he taught him how to read and write, the memories he kept in his notebook. Shortly thereafter, he died of the plague, almost sweeping the entire village, but was rescued and healed by the same old man, who died of natural causes shortly afterwards. This series of events inspired him to sympathize.
In 1174, he was noted by Count Rowe and he accepted Yuri as his adoptive son, where he was given the name Yuri. He reveals to Byleth that "Yuri" was the name given when he was adopted by Count Rowe throughout their supports. He still kept his real name, but he was forced to conceal it. Although he tells Byleth his real name on their S-support, it is never revealed to the player.
At one point, Yuri was hired as an assassin by an unknown supporter to kill Bernadetta, the young daughter of Count Varley, who bore the Crest of Indech. He infiltrated the valley by working as a gardener assistant and believed he could do it only if she gained her trust, and he befriended Bernadetta. She considered him her first friend and they ran around the garden, and he thought she was the first person he had to take care of often. Once sufficient trust had been established, Yuri sneaked into her room to kill her but could not. He claimed this was his biggest mistake at the time. This short hesitation enabled Count Varley to seize him at the scene, where he survived, but beat his men severely. Bernadetta mistakenly believed she was responsible for his death and was not informed of the assassination attempt.
In 1178, he entered Garreg Mach's Officers Academy, but was expelled due to a scandal. When he and other knights were tasked with killing people from gangs, Yuri recognized them as old friends and killed fellow knights during the debate over their duties. Yuri was expected to face the death penalty, but Aelfric said he should be pardoned and sent to Abyss. In fact, Rhea ordered Yuri to keep an eye on Aelfric because of his recent suspicious behavior. Because Aelfric was expelled from the church long before Yuri ended up in Abyss, his life seems to have been spontaneous without mentioning any crimes against the church.
Cindered Shadows[]
Yuri and the other Abyssians have dealt with unusual amounts of surface contact, all of which have been aggressive. He is seen planning with Balthus when Byleth, Edelgard, Dimitri, Claude, Linhardt, Ashe and Hilda find a hole in the surface leading to Abyss. They flee to Yuri and meet an Abyssian, who announces their existence. Yuri decides to meet them as they are not knights, not intended to attack with their meager numbers, but they are still working with the Church.
The Abyssians meet them and challenge the arrivals, but are immediately defeated. Balthus and the others inform them of their tribe, and Byleth agrees to help them. They were able to drive out invading mercenaries thanks to the traps set up by the glass to attract all mercenaries.
When Aelfric was captured after recovering the Chalice, Yuri and others rescued him. However, once Aelfric was rescued, he showed his sincerity, and it appears that Yuri also sided with Aelfric. Yuri teleports with other members of the Ashen Wolves, but tells Byleth to save him and the others.
Yuri, who returned to Abyss, reveals his true colors to Aelfric, but later struggles with fellow members. He and the others survived because Byleth and the students arrived just in time as Yuri had warned them beforehand. He and the others topple Aelfric, who has turned into an Umbral Beast after an improper ritual.

Quotes[]
“ | Yuri: I know you... You're the one Lord Lonato adopted, isn't that right? Ashe: That's right. Wait, I recognize you too! You're Count Rowe's adopted son! I don't know how you ended up here, but your house is no doubt worried sick! Let's get you home, OK? Yuri: You really think I'd choose to go back there? Haha! Better watch yourself—you might lose a limb...or your life. |

“ | Yuri: Do you truly intend to forfeit your life for House Rowe? There's still time to change your mind. Ashe: I finally understand Lonato. He knew the price of standing for his beliefs...and he paid it gladly. I WILL DO THE SAME!! Yuri: I like you—don't be an idiot. Or maybe I'll just have to smack some sense into you. |

~ Yuri and Ashe's battle dialogue in Ambush at Ailell |
“ | Once, I used a clever name—and my charms—to become the attendant to the head slug of a noble house. Yet another time, I took a name befitting the Kingdom. That landed me in the academy as a noble's adopted son. That's how I've gotten this far and earned my fortune. In doing so, I've spread my wings of protection further, to help those who need it most. | „ |
