A young Yusuke appears in a flashback during the Dark Tournament Saga, voiced by Aaron Dismuke. He is voiced by Jonathan Charles in the English dub of YuYu Hakusho: The Movie and by Rik Nagel in YuYu Hakusho the Movie: Poltergeist Report. In the Netflix adaptation, he is portrayed by Takumi Kitamura. In the English dub of the Netflix adaptation, he is voiced by Khoi Dao.
Overview[]
Yusuke is an delinquent who dies in a tragically ironic manner: saving a child from being hit by a car. It gets even more tragically ironic when he is informed that not only did The Powers That Be never expect such an act of goodness from him, the kid would have survived anyway, without a scratch. Yusuke pushing him out of the way just gave him a few extra scrapes. Since there's no place for him in Heaven nor Hell, Yusuke is given the opportunity to return to life, but once he does — Koenma defeats him, and he becomes the Spirit Detective, taking care of supernatural problems that might threaten ordinary humans.
Appearance[]
Yusuke has black hair, which he usually slicks back with gel, with brown eyes. He has a peach to tan skin complexion and has a skinny but lean, muscular body.
He wears a green jumpsuit with gold buttons and black shoes (a substitute for the blue school uniform assigned by his school he should be wearing). At the Dark Tournament, he wears a red jacket (with yellow tinted cuffs and collar) over a white shirt, along with pale blue jeans and white sneakers. When actually fighting, he switches to a yellow sleeveless shirt and blue pants, with black shoes, a black karate belt and green wristbands. At the beginning of the Chapter Black Arc, he wears his red jacket look, replacing it with a dark green suit jacket. In his fight against Sensui, he was seen without the green suit jacket as his white shirt that he wears was now loose. During the final arc, he returns to the complete red jacket look. During his training with Hokushin and being given his inheritance by Raizen before dying, he wears the same outfit as in the Dark Tournament; his sleeveless shirt became light yellow and his black karate belt is replaced with a black obi and his blue martial arts pants became longer due to his current height. When fighting in the tournament, dons a fully white-clad karate uniform, complete with a green sash around the waist and black shoes. He is also seen wearing a complete dark blue suit with grey pants, black shoes and a white undershirt when visiting Kuroko Sanada.
In some episodes, his hair became messier when it is not slicked back, like when his body was taken care by Keiko until his revival, in his first fight against Chu in the Dark Tournament, getting too much pain from Genkai's Spirit Wave Orb as his final test, trying to beat Toguro after he swiftly killed Genkai and her dying words, being knocked down by Yomi which leads to his loss in the Demon Tournament and being treated his serious injuries and being washed up in the beach when Keiko had kissed him in the end.
When his demon blood is awakened, he has long black hair with dark brown highlights (white when possessed by Raizen in the anime) and demonic markings on his face, arms and chest.
In the Poltergeist Report movie, Yusuke wears two outfits; his first outfit is his primary attire in the Chapter Black Arc, only his suit jacket is replaced with a blue long sleeve denim blazer jacket and his white short sleeve shirt remains loose. His second outfit is similar to his red jacket look but wearing his blue blazer jacket from his first outfit and his white sneakers are replaced with black and gray high-top dunks.
When fighting against Yakumo, Yusuke had his short sleeve shirt folded to make it sleeveless much like his appearance during his battle against Rando in the Genkai Tournament until his shirt is destroyed when he uses the Power Sphere to fuse with his own powers to defeat him.
In the latest OVA 2018, Yusuke's hair is initially a little messier look with fringes before he combed it back to its slicked back style. When his mission to rescue Koenma from getting hostage along with the good demons, He retains his primary attire in the Dark Tournament saga and his red jacket look was replaced with a brown leather jacket and the color of his jeans are now blue.
Personality[]
“ | Yusuke Urameshi. He is like no man I've ever met. He's made alliances not through talk and treaties. But by connecting directly with the warrior spirit in each individual. | „ |
~ Yomi, on how Yusuke makes allies |
Yusuke is a juvenile delinquent who prioritizes fighting over the safety of the world more than once, but it's remarked upon several times that he's not as bad as he seems, and seeing his friends in danger is the fastest way to make him stronger. Likewise, he is more or less the leader of the group and the most balanced between idealism and pragmatism. He wants to save people and help as much as he can, but he'll still make the hard choices if he has to.
Yusuke is rather indifferent to death by the Chapter Black Saga; since he knows there's an afterlife, there is no point in being upset if someone dies, except that you cant talk to them anymore. He has taken a more neutral stance on demons and human differences; comparing a demon eating humans to how he would eat a hamburger. This mindset scared his predecessor as Spirit Detective, whom blamed the awakening of his demonic heritage; when, in truth, Yusuke simply saw the food chain didn't end at humans. Yusuke himself would never eat humans.
As Yomi notes, Yusuke typically wins allies through fisticuffs over talking, because fighters learn their opponents' character from combat alone, Kurama being an exception due to emphasizing with him over worrying about their respective mothers. Yusuke has fought Kuwabara (typical school brawls), Hiei, Chu and Jin; all of whom respect him for his honor as a fighter.
Yusuke was always close to his childhood friend Keiko, playfully annoying and sexually harassing her as teenagers; he takes her retaliatory slaps in stride, as her anger cools off by the next day. Despite this, Yusuke loves Keiko, even indirectly calling "my goddess" in the last OVA; asking her to marry him in the future. (Though he only MEANT it when they were teens; having used the idea to stop fights with her as children).
