“ | I will kill Yuji Itadori myself. | „ |
~ Yuta Okkotsu's famous quote as he declares his intention to "kill" Yuji Itadori. |
Yuta Okkotsu is the main protagonist of the manga/anime Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and a major character in its sequel series Jujutsu Kaisen. Initially joining Jujutsu High in order to gain strength to exorcise his childhood love interest Rika Orimoto, who has been haunting him ever since her accident, Yuta is revealed to be far more important later on, as he possessed an incredible amount of skill and cursed energy.
He is among the potential students to surpass the strongest sorcerer himself, Satoru Gojo, who is also revealed to be his distant relative. He eventually gains immense recognition from the Jujutsu Society following his victory against the powerful curse user Suguru Geto during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons.
As of Jujutu Kaisen, he's currently an second-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High, and had traveled to Africa to further train his abilities with the assistance of Miguel, until he returned to Japan to aid his teacher and friends in their fight against Kenjaku and Ryomen Sukuna.
He is voiced by Megumi Ogata in Japanese and by Kayleigh McKee in English. Ogata has also voiced Shinji Ikari in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Sailor Uranus in Sailor Moon, and Kurama in Yu Yu Hakusho.
Personality[]
Jujutsu Kaisen 0[]
Yuta is introduced as a kind-hearted and timid teen who doesn't want others to suffer due to Rika Orimoto's vengeful spirit, despite it also being his bullies and tends to be lonely a lot, due to his curse hurting a lot of people. He is also willing to die if it means Rika won't harm anyone else, although talked out of it by Gojo, who instead wanted him to harness her powers.
Eventually, following his time with Gojo, and his classmates Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda, Yuta became more social and interacted with people more normally. He was rather scared of Inumaki until he realized how truly kind he was and established a friendship with him. It was thanks to the bond he made with them that he eventually became more confident in himself and further strengthened his goal to help free Rika.
Yuta is also an excellent learner, grasping the concept of Jujutsu despite being a newcomer. He was even able to understand the level of danger a cursed spirit could be, as best seen when facing down a semi-graded curse, knowing full well that the only way they could win was with Inumaki's cursed speech. He was even able to use cursed abilities that he didn't really train with, such as the cursed speech, which he use against Geto.
Jujutsu Kaisen[]
Following the events of 0, Yuta is no longer timid and shy around others, has full confidence in himself, and still remains as the kind-hearted boy he was back when he joined Jujutsu High. He still remained loyal to Gojo, as he decided the Jujutsu council into thinking that he would kill Yuji Itadori, but he instead saves him and vows to protect Itadori from his enemies.
Biography[]
Background[]
Yuta Okkotsu (born in March 7th, 2001) is the descendant of Michizane Sugawara, formerly a highly reputed Jujutsu sorcerer and currently one of the Three Greatest Vengeful Spirits in Japan. He is distantly related to Satoru Gojo, but is unaware of his heritage.
One day while playing in a park, Yuta witnesses his best friend Rika Orimoto get killed in a car accident, traumatising the boy. Yuta will witness Orimoto haunting him in the subsequent years. Rika would harm several bullies in order to protect him, traumatising him even further.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0[]
One day, Rika nearly killed 4 bullies, drawing the attention of Jujutsu Society. Yuta surrendered to them when they came to capture him, and accepted getting executed if it meant Rika won't harm anyone else. Fortunately for him, Satoru Gojo brought a stay order for his execution by convincing the higher-ups that he will train Yuta to exorcise her.
When Yuta meets three new classmates, they both notice that Yuta is cursed and all of them decide to attack him, confusing Yuta. However, Gojo reassures his students by warning Yuta is protected by Rika, then explains to Yuta what Jujutsu society is and how they learn their skills.
After learning about their new class, Yuta and Maki were taken by Gojo to the elementary school to kill the cursed one who kidnaps children. Yuta, although she works with Maki, has a problem with her relationship, and they argue. Gojo explains to Yuta where the cursed spirits come from and why they must be left to solve the problem after the screen is placed. When three cursed spirits appear, Yuta gets scared but Maki defeats them and they kill them all. As they enter the school, Yuta feels terrified when he enters the school because he feels the spirits will attack again. However, the spirits do not attack Yuta and Maki, which makes Maki wonder why they are not attacking them and if it is because they are afraid of Yuta, Maki asks Yuta to show her school ID.
After Suguru Geto declares war against Tokyo Jujutsu High, Yuta is retained at Tokyo due to Rika's unreliability, with Maki agreeing to guard him.
Unbeknownst to Tokyo Jujutsu High (but correctly guessed by Gojo), Geto's intention was to let the school's guard down so that he could personally retrieve Rika Orimoto using his Uzumaki technique.
Geto soon arrived, incapacitating Maki with his technique. Angered seeing this, Yuta decides to accept Geto's challenge to beat him, summoning Rika. After a tenuous battle, Rika used one of her strongest techniques, which successfully defeats and fatally injures Geto, who is mercy killed by Gojo soon enough.
Gojo then informs him that Rika is tethered to Earth due to him subconsciously cursing her death, with her actually using his Cursed techniques due to Yuta's ancestry. Horrified, Yuta summons Rika and begs for her forgiveness and asks her to kill him. However, Rika, now completely freed of malice, immediately forgives Yuta and thanks him for allowing her to spend some time on Earth, before departing to the afterlife.
Miguel then decides to train Yuta, on the behest of Gojo.
Powers and Abilities[]
Immense Skill Level[]
As a descendant of Michizane Sugawara, one of the greatest sorcerers to ever live, making Yuta a distant relative of the Gojo clan, Yuta Okkotsu wielded extraordinary potential, to where Satoru Gojo classifies him along with Kinji Hakari and Yuji Itadori as one of the three students with the gifts needed to rival, if not surpass him, the strongest sorcerer. It was his potential that allowed him to cast an unfathomably powerful curse on Rika Orimoto, transforming her into the second most powerful cursed spirit in history under only Ryoumen Sukuna himself.
While being haunted by Rika's vengeful spirit, Yuta was immediately registered as a special grade due to Rika's immense power, making him the most recent person to receive the ranking. While he naturally had absolutely no fighting skill and relied on Maki during their first mission, when they were swallowed by a curse and it came down to Yuta to rescue everyone inside, Yuta demonstrated already his strong determination despite his depression to protect others and was able to tap into his emotions and fully manifest Rika, ripping the other curse apart and freeing everyone. Despite having little physical strength and stamina, with sheer will, he was able to barely carry everyone outside the barrier and finish the mission, proving he had the will and the potential to be a powerful sorcerer indeed. With the realization of his weakness, Yuta proceeded to throw himself into a three months training, particularly under Maki for armed combat, and managed to make remarkable improvements and put up a decent fight against Maki in their training. It was in their second mission that Yuta finally demonstrated how he was able to acquire a noteworthy amount of skill despite at first relying on Toge when a semi-grade 1 curse ambushed them, Toge was injured saving Yuta, where he was able to maneuver through the onslaught of the cursed spirit and even successfully land a counterattack, giving him the opening needed to heal Toge.
Yuta continued to steadily grew stronger as he threw himself into more training. By the 2017 Goodwill Event, Yuta completely dominated all of the Kyoto Jujutsu High competitors, including Aoi Todo, while leaving only little traces of his usage of Rika's power. By the time of December 2017, when Suguru Geto invaded the school and injured his friends while targeting Yuta, Yuta finally demonstrated the full extent of his growth as he was able to dramatically increase his physical abilities through his emotions and unlock more of his talent, unprecedentedly not only able to copy cursed techniques using Rika's bottomless cursed energy to be shaped into them, but even cast the exceedingly advanced Reverse Cursed Technique, allowing him to fight on par with and push Geto to his limits when he couldn't use the majority of his curses, with Geto admitting that he would have had little chance of victory even at full strength had he targetted Yuta when he had already mastered his powers, before ultimately defeating Geto by attempting to sacrifice his life to protect his friends and overpowering Geto's Maximum: Uzumaki by removing the limiters on Rika.
With Rika gone and the revelation that Rika was the manifestation of his own abilities, Yuta continued to hone his prodigious abilities and within only 3 months, he regained his special-grade ranking as he was tutored by both Miguel and Satoru, boasting extraordinary power and special abilities that could only be surpassed by modern-age sorcerers by Satoru Gojo. When he returned to Shibuya from overseas, Yuta effortlessly dispatched many powerful cursed spirits and earned the trust of the higher-ups to execute Sukuna's vessel in order to save Yuji.
As soon as he arrived, Yuta was recognized as a major threat to everyone. Yuji, Choso, and Naoya, three strong jujutsu users, were all briefly stricken by Yuta's unsettling cursed energy, so much so that Naoya, who especially prides himself on his abilities, was quick to ally himself with Yuta in order to avoid any potential conflict, and Choso, a special grade, told Yuji to run away immediately because he could feel Yuta's overwhelming strength is on a scale similar to Satoru Gojo's, ensuring death. Yuji himself acknowledged Yuta was far more powerful from solely his own cursed energy levels. Easily pursuing and continuing to engage Yuji despite the best efforts of his enemies, Yuta overwhelmed him with even greater cursed energy than the strongest sorcerer fueling an impeccable reinforcement techniques far beyond not only the average sorcerer, but even easily handling Yuji's own extraordinary physical prowess reinforced, and masterful close-range combat skills that made him more than a match for Yuji. Although Yuji was not able to fight seriously and was burdened by a desire to just die, Yuta himself was also holding back, which was the only reason why Yuji could break his katana at all, and even then Yuta simply responded by summoning Rika voluntarily to restrain Yuji before proceeding to reveal his mastery over reverse cursed technique that has surpassed even his own mentor, as Yuta instantly restarted his heart by outputting reverse cursed energy into him.
It was during the Culling Game, where Yuta was matched up against some of the strongest players the deadly battle royal had to offer, that the second most powerful sorcerer in the modern age finally displayed just how far his abilities have advanced. He effortlessly dispatched Dhruv Lakdawalla, an incarnated sorcerer who once conquered Japan, single-handedly shattering the four-way deadlock in the Sendai Colony. While holding back and handicapping himself against Kurourushi, he overpowered the cockroach special-graded curse in multiple exchanges and when he was cornered, he still managed to exorcise the curse using a calculated maneuver that blasted Kurourushi's head with reverse cursed energy, an ingenuity that left Ryu Ishigori impressed and Takako Uro seeing him as a worthy opponent. Even against their fierce onslaught, Yuta was able to hold his own remarkably well against Takako Uro and Ryu Ishigori directly after defeating Kurourushi, using reverse cursed technique and his cursed energy manipulation to survive Takako Uro's unique abilities and proving capable of contending with Ishigori from the start well enough to make him believe Yuta could be his dessert.
Still outmatched, Yuta responded by finally giving his best, utilizing Rika and his full skillset. He proceeded to calmly and efficiently gain the upper hand over his opponents as he completely took over the momentum of the battle using a comprehensive mastery of the copied cursed techniques and control over Rika, even confidently countering their domain expansion with his own, before proceeding to excel even when the domain struggle resulted in everyone being unable to use cursed techniques for a limited time by eliminating Uro with his advanced cursed energy controland Rika's and Kurourushi's offspring with his reverse cursed energy. Yuta then finally defeated Ryu in their fierce one-on-one match, despite Ryu having the strength needed to truly endanger Yuta with his cursed energy output and blasts. His growth as a fighter was displayed most abundantly as he was able to overcome his 400 years more experienced opponent using misdirection and ability to comfortably take him on directly, turning Ryu's own destructive force against him after single-handedly matching his enemy even after Rika was defeated, with Ryu admitting Yuta had finally given him what he most wanted, displaying that not only is Yuta one of the most powerful sorcerers still around in the modern age, but also in the entire history by defeating some of the jujutsu world's most hardcore past warriors and earning their acknowledgment.
Close-Range Combat Skills[]
While first training as a sorcerer, Yuji was given a katana mainly as an object to stabilize his cursed energy. Through vigorous training with Maki, the most proficient cursed tool user at Jujutsu High, Yuta became decent with a sword. In addition to proving himself as a competent sparring partner for Maki in a sword fight, he could take on a powerful cursed spirit with his skills using a sword, and with his physical abilities super-charged and Rika's assistance, was able to even match up with the exceptionally physically skilled Geto.
In his long training, Yuta dramatically improved his skills in close-combat, not only dramatically improving his swordsmanship, but also acquiring a remarkable mastery over martial arts, along with apparently mastering a wide variety of weapons, as he stored cursed tools inside Rika, indicating he's confident in his ability to wield them if he wished to. When fighting with a sword, he perfectly balances his greatly refined swordsmanship with his enhanced cursed energy manipulation, the superhuman swordsmanship prowess amplified by his own genuine skills, and could comfortably use unarmed techniques whenever necessary. During his fight with Yuji, he easily managed to push him into the defensive with decisive attacks that Yuji could barely avoid and easily landed a kick to the sternum, delivering a vicious cut before having his katana broken, despite holding himself back from dealing a truly ending blow as to be able to revive him later. He defeated a large cursed spirit with a diving stab so powerful it cracked the ground beneath them.
During the Culling Game, he used his katana to dispatch Dhruv Lakdawalla, presumably easily cutting down his shikigami before ending his life, before disarming Kurorushi with ease and hitting him with a powerful backfist. Once disarmed of his sword, Yuta was still able to fight back against Takako Uro and prove to be equally matched with Ryu Ishigori in martial arts. Using a steel arm attachment, Yuta pummeled Takako Uro badly.
Intelligence[]
With time and experience, Yuta eventually developed a remarkable amount of intelligence and cunning, able to calculate various scenarios and think ahead in battle, as well as able to deduce weaknesses in his enemies and quickly form the proper counter plans to them. This was displayed when he was faced with exceptionally strong fighters in the Culling Game: First targetting the protection of civilians, Yuta quickly managed to rescue the innocents from Druv's barrier by besting and slaying the ancient sorcerer and successfully ensure their protection when Kurorushi arrived without showing any signs of stress. Within a single exchange with Takako Uro, Yuta quickly grasped the basics of her complex innate technique, and when Ryu interrupted their battle, Yuta proceeded to close the distance by resourcefully using a hole in the path towards his opponent that he created early to trick Ryu into believing he had been struck down. Upon deciding to finally bring out Rika, Yuta immediately managed to outstrategize Takako Uro by immobilizing her first to prevent her from redirecting his attacks and tricking her with Dhruv's shikigami, before proceeding to defeat her after the failed Domain struggle as soon as he let her guard down out of concern over Kurourushi. He also successfully got close to Ryu by propelling himself with a blast from Rika, taking advantage of Ryu not knowing Rika could launch a blast of her own, unveiled his ability to use Uro's technique to catch him off-guard, correctly anticipating Ryu had previously thought he and Rika had different cursed techniques, before finally decisively overpowering Ryu by luring him into the spot where his own blast could be redirected back at him, an attack Ryu never saw coming.
Even outside the field of battle, Yuta proved to be skilled in strategizing and deceiving others, as he was able to create a carefully-woven plan to save Yuji by pretending to be his executioner, using his own exceptional abilities as a natural basis and displaying anger at Yuji for what happened in Shibuya as the motivator to make the higher-ups agree to grant him that right. He even anticipated that they would enter a Binding Vow, and already had the countermeasure as to kill and then simply revive Yuji with Reverse Cursed Technique, which successfully fooled them and made them announce his death. He also took advantage of Naoya's poisoned state to force him into a leverage where he could coerce him into declaring Yuji's execution as complete.
Cursed Energy Control[]
- Immesurable Cursed Energy Levels: Yuta possessed phenomenally enormous levels of cursed energy as a descendant of Michizane Sugawara, proclaimed to be above even Satoru Gojo in terms of cumulative cursed energy. His power was such that he transformed Rika Orimoto, a loved one, into a vengeful spirit of such unparalleled power that even the likes of Suguru Geto, an avid collector of powerful cursed spirits, dubbed her as the "Queen of Curses." and believed Yuta's power, channeled through Rika, could destroy the Jujutsu Foundation. In the present, he is able to exert an aura of cursed energy as potent as that of his own mentor, as displayed by Yuji and Choso comparing him to Satoru, even describing it as more ominous. His reserves were sufficient to participate in the most battle-torn Sendai Colony for a prolonged period of time against some of the most powerful players in the Culling Game, where he managed to use numerous high-level reinforcement and reverse cursed techniques consecutively even while pressured, with Ryu Ishigori describing Yuta's cursed energy as nearly bottomless, before having to recharge and use Rika's own cursed energy. Yuta can also unleash exceptional levels of cursed energy in the form of blastwaves and beams, with the output of his overwhelming cursed energy able to almost rival that of even Ryu's unmatched record of constant destructive cursed energy output. A single swing of his cursed energy charged katana created a blastwave so powerful it completely annihilated an entire swarm of Kurourushi's cockroaches.
- Cursed Energy Control: At the beginning, Yuta's control over cursed energy was quite limited, to where simply stabilizing his cursed energy by channeling Rika's power into his ring and then into his katana was difficult enough to require constant help from his peers. While fighting Geto, Yuta was running on lots of adrenaline and more cursed energy than he had experienced up to that point, which did allow him to fight with exceptionally reinforced flesh, but his poor control broke his katana as he imbued too much cursed energy into it. However, his prolonged training overseas have dramatically improved his cursed energy control, to where he was able to develop his own form of reinforcement, vastly superior to most sorcerers, and master Reverse Cursed Technique.
- Reverse Cursed Technique: Faced with the dire injuries of his friends, Yuta, despite having no training or practice in it, was able to subconsciously tap into the core of his cursed energy and unlock the ability to heal their injuries, acquiring reverse cursed technique, a feat very few could do even with enormous dedication and training. His mastery over reverse cursed technique has since grown significantly: He can cast a reverse cursed technique even with his sword still impaled on the heart of Yuji so as to resuscitate him as soon as he stopped his heart, and could heal Naoya of the poison of Choso's blood, something that required a higher level of reverse cursed technique. He is also able to cast it repeatedly without issue to heal himself of any significant damage he took from the attacks of Takako Uro and Ryu Ishigori. He could even output reverse cursed technique, a feat few could perform, as displayed when he easily exorcised Kurourushi with a single blast of reverse cursed technique from his mouth.
Reinforced Physical Abilities[]
With his significantly improved cursed energy control, Yuta was able to constantly strengthen his weak body in battle with massive amounts of cursed energy, allowing for feats of high-level superhuman physical prowess. His reinforcement technique is far above even elite sorcerers, as his control makes his attacks unpredictable, and he is able to ensure his offense carry enough power to end a fight with every single attack while his defense is dense enough to restrict all incoming damage to a minimum.
- Superhuman Strength: With his cursed energy, Yuta's physical strength is enhanced to levels where he could easily match and damage even someone as physically strong as Yuji, as displayed by his ability to casually throw a car back at Yuji when he threw it at him, easily send Yuji reeling back with a single kick to his sternum, and would easily have been able to slice through even Yuji's tough skin with his katana. He also easily knocked out a weakened Choso with a single backhand. During his scuffles in the Culling Game, he displayed the strength to effortlessly rip a steel railing and throw it at Kurourushi and send the special-grade flying with a single punch. He could also match Ryu Ishigori, an individual with the highest amount of cursed energy output in history, in terms of cursed-energy reinforced strength, delivering and blocking blows equally while also harming him even with Ishigori reinforcing himself as well, at one point destroying the ground with a punch even with Ishigori blocking it.
- Superhuman Speed and Agility: While reinforcing himself, Yuta's speed, agility and maneuverability is able to keep up with Yuji running at superhuman speeds even with a drawn katana and easily pressure him in close-range combat. He also proved proficient in acrobatic techniques, as displayed by how he could easily maneuver through Ryu's cursed energy beams using skillful acrobatic spins and parkour moves.
- Superhuman Endurance and Durability: With the fortification afforded by his cursed energy reinforcement, Yuta displayed nigh-invulnerabilty and tremendous stamina levels even when faced against high-caliber opponents, as displayed by his ability to withstand and ultimately come out victorious over the exceptionally strong enemies of the Sendai Colony despite being pressured noticeably. Blastwaves from Takako Uro only minorly injured him without causing him to show any signs of pain, and he was unaffected by Takako's regular punches aside from surprise over her unique cursed technique. While he was injured by Ishigori's destructive beams and reinforced punches, Yuta was still able to weave them off without suffering too significant of injuries. He even managed to deflect one of Ishigori's beams with his bare hands.
Innate Technique[]
The result of his cursing of his childhood love, Rika Orimoto, granted him access to an immensely powerful vengeful spirit that symbolized his enormous latent abilities and extraordinary cursed energy levels, allowing him to mold his cursed energy into any cursed techniques. The strength of Rika meant even imperfect manifestation could casually harm both sorcerers and non-sorcerers, while her full manifestation could effortlessly tear huge cursed spirits and dispatch all the cursed spirits thrown at her by Geto. She also proved capable of fully supporting Yuta outside of simple brute-force attacks, as she could easily help him maneuever through Geto's cursed spirits and block attacks for him. It was when Yuta finally unleashed the fullest extent of his power inside her that she could utterly overpower Geto's Uzumaki and Tamamo-no-Mae-Incarnate with a single beam of cursed energy.
Even after Yuta broke the curse on Rika and unbound her soul from him, while her soul passed on, her cursed spirit form remained and became his innate technique. His training dramatically increased his control over Rika, to where he could partially manifest her with ease in an instant and command her to perform tasks independently of him. His ring remains the connection between him and Rika and he could fully manifest her fully for five minutes while simultaneously recharging his cursed energy.
- Storing Cursed Energy Tools: Using Rika, Yuta can store a wide range of cursed tools for convenience's sake as to bring them out whenever he needed to without carrying an abundant amount on his person.
- Copying Cursed Techniques: His innate technique's other functions seems to be copying virtually any technique by using his immesurable cursed energy to be shaped into any form of technique. There appears to be no limitations to the copied cursed techniques, as even hereditary cursed techniques could be perfectly copied, and he could master those techniques and use multiple of them in quick succession.
- Cursed Speech: Replicating Toge's Cursed Speech, he at first performed the technique by creating a microphone with the Snake Eyes and Fangs symbol on it, and was able to command every single one of Geto's swarm of lower-grade cursed spirits to die. In the present, Yuta has mastered the technique to where he could activate the Cursed Speech by just speaking commands, as he was able to manifest the Snake Eyes and Fangs symbol on his mouth.
- Shikigami Summoning: Copied from Dhruv Lakdawalla, Yuta could summon shikigami using his hair as an intermediary in the form of small bats with heads like Rika's, which fly around the enemy to form a sphere and the orbital trajectory constitutes a domain to slash anyone inside it.
- Sky Manipulation: Replicating Takako Uro's ability to "control the sky", with the power to turn the sky into a tangible space for manipulation, Yuta can redirect the attacks of others. He could also break the surface of the sky like thin ice to strike his opponents with a focused shockwave.
- True and Mutual Love: Yuta's domain expansion creates an environment of wrecked buildings and tied knots with katanas littered across the ground. Its sure-hit affect can manifest through any of the techniques Yuta has copied. He first tried to use it against Uro and Ishigori, but failed due to Kurourushi's disruption, though he later opened it successfully against Sukuna.
Trivia[]
- Yuta gets the 7th place with 7,934 votes in the first poll of the series.
