Zang Ba is a character in the 14th-century Chinese classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by the late Luo Guanzhong, and its multiple adaptations. He is a military general who lived during the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period of China.
History[]
After the Yellow Turban Rebellion, Zang Ba and his subordinates Sun Guan, Yin Li, Wu Dun, and Chang Xi joined the provincial governor Tao Qian. They fought against Xu's Yellow Turban remnants and defeated them, but they did not return to Tao Qian but declared independence.
Later on, when the late warlord Dong Zhuo's foster son, Lu Bu controlled Xu, he and his people would attack Lu Bu's ally Xiao Jian in Langye and the city of plunder. They were called Taishan gangsters and Lu Bu sent out his general Gao Shun to destroy them as well. Zang Ba and his soldiers repelled Gao Shun, but because of the fear of Yuan Shu's trickery in Huainan, Zang Ba agreed to formed an alliance with Lu Bu, and together they repelled Yuan's attack on Xu.
Zang Ba fought against Cao Cao's troops in Puyang and fought with Yue Jin. He later fought with Yuan Shu's forces under the command of Zhang Liao and surrendered to Cao Cao after Xiapi. However, during Liu Bei's attack on Xu, he was sent by Cao Cao to harass the Qing Province. During the Battle of Chibi, many generals worried that Ma Teng and Han Sui attacked the rear.
While Xu Shu proposed to travel to San Pass and defend any potential intruders. Cao Cao agreed to send Xu Shu and Zang Ba to San Pass. This is part of Pang Tong's plan to ensure Xu Shu's safety.
