~ Zeetha to Agatha (Vol. 12 p. 72) |
Zeetha, Daughter of Chump is a supporting protagonist in the print-and-web comic series Girl Genius by Phil & Kaja Foglio.
Coming from the faraway land of Skifander, Zeetha found herself lost in Europa. It was there that she met Agatha Heterodyne, who she adopted as trainee and accompanied with in their adventures.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Zeetha was born in the faraway lost city of Skifander, as the daughter of Warrior-Queen Zantabraxus and a European adventurer known there as "Chump" (all but stated to be a younger Klaus Wulfenbach). "Chump" left Skifander when Zeetha was but a month old.
Later, a few years before (Vol. 4 p. 17) the events of the comic, a European expidition led by Prof. Guylian Consolmango and financed by Lady Ariadne Steelgarter (Vol. 18 p. 83) reached Skifander. Consolmango convinced Queen Zantabraxus to send someone from the lost city back with them, and they chose Zeetha with the intend that she'd return to Skifander with news of the outside world. Zeetha went with them on their airship, catching a sickness on board. But suddenly the ship was attacked by pirates, who killed everyone aboard except for her with the intent to sell her into slavery. Zeetha recovered from her sickness by the time she reached the pirates' base. She quickly took the chance to break out of her cell, kill the pirates, and use their machine guns to blow up the pirates' base.
Though the expidition crew was avenged, Zeetha soon realized that anyone who might know how to get back to Skifander was dead. She then wandered the land looking for a way home. Two years (Vol. 4 p. 19) before the comic's start, she joined a traveling theatre troupe known as Master Payne's Circus of Adventuere. She performed acts of sword-play on stage when traveling with the circus.
First Journey with Agatha[]
Two years (in Vol. 4) after joining the circus, she would meet another traveller named Agatha Heterodyne. Zeetha introduced herself to Agatha as being from Skifander (Vol. 4 p. 15), which Agatha knew of from stories her uncle Barry told her as a little kid. Zeetha was greatly distressed when she learned Barry disappeared and then ran away. But later she calmed down, talked with Agatha, and agreed to adopt her as her one in a lifetime student for warrior training. After doing so, Zeetha continues traveling with Agatha in the circus.
In Sturmhalten (Vols. 5-6), Agatha splits up from the main party after Prince Aaronev invited Agatha for dinner. After hours of Agatha gone, Zeetha and another companion named Lars suspect something is wrong. Zeetha goes with a few others to sneak into the castle. They reunite with "Agatha" - unknown to them, possessed by Lucrezia Mongfish's personality-copy - who pretends to have lost some memories. Klaus catches them, and there's a brief moment (Vol. 6 p. 112) where Klaus recognizes Zeetha as being from Skifander and tries talking to her in her native language. This converstion is interrupted as Klaus gets infected with a wasp, Agatha regains control of her body, and a fight breaks out between the circus and the Baron's troops. The circus (including Zeetha and Agatha) escaped from the fight, and the two figured out (Vol. 6 p. 148) how to hold back Lucrezia's influence.
Zeetha accompanied Agatha when she went to Mechanicsburg (Vol. 7). Agatha and Zeetha agreed (Vol. 7 p. 110) that Agatha would go to Castle Heterodyne alone while Zeetha cares for an injured Gil Wulfenbach. Zeetha met up with Gil (Vol. 8) at Mamma Gkika's to help him heal up, where she explained the situation to him. Gil arranged to go to Castle Heterodyne, and after much interruption he enters the castle (Vol. 9) with Zeetha by his side. After a while working undercover residents, Zeetha met back up with Agatha (Vol. 10). She helped her repair the castle and fight off enemies like Zola (Vol. 11). Injured in a fight, she is taken by Axel Higgs back to Mamma Gkika's to heal up. She soon (Vol. 11) got better with Higgs' help (p. 58). Much later in the comic (Vol. 20 p. 98) it's explained that Zeetha was healed with Jägerdraught.
Once all fixed up, Zeetha got back with Agatha (Vol. 12) right in time for the Siege of Mechanicshburg. Zeetha worked with several of Agatha's other companions to organize various repairs and the like on the battlefield. By the time the siege started to be lifted (Vol. 13), Zeetha and Higgs had fallen in love with one another. Higgs confessed his love right as he was leaving Mechanicsburg, and Zeetha kissed (p. 39) him on their way out of town.
Post-Timeskip Adventures[]
After the siege of Mechanicsburg, the Baron froze the city in a time-bubble. Zeetha was outside of the town at the time so she wasn't frozen. Over the next two years, Zeetha lived among the Clays, a pack of Jägers, and various other refugees in a hidden base. Though Higgs was in the service of the new Baron Gilgamesh Wulfenbach, he was able to keep in touch with Zeetha.
For all everyone knew, Agatha was still trapped in Mechanicsburg, but two years after the siege she had re-appeared by jumping through a portal able to skip forward in time. Zeetha reunited with Agatha not long after (Vol. 14) and continued to journey with her company.
She accompanied Agatha in fighting the Beast of the Rails. She also traveled with her to Paris (Vols. 15-17), where they thwarted a plot by Zola and the Other to take over the city.
Following this, Zeetha went with Agatha to England (Vols. 18-21), where she also met back up with Higgs. She worked in the Queen's Dome, where (among other things) she fought off the Other and helped remove Lucrezia's essentia from Agatha's mind. Aftwewards, she and Higgs danced together at a ball hosted by Queen Albia of England. It was around this time that Higgs explained his true nature to her, which Zeetha wasn't put off by. It was during this time that Zeetha also learned that she was given Jägerdraught in Mechanicsburg.
Later, it was arranged (Vol. 21) that Zeetha would go with Agatha, Higgs, and a few others to retrieve Prende's Lantern from Lucrezia. They went to an untamed island (Vols. 22-23) and defeated Lucrezia there. During the expedition, when tampering with Lucrezia's mirror-portals, they figured out a way to make Skifander show up; but unfortunately Zeetha couldn't go through and they needed to leave before they could figure out how to get there.
Appearance[]
Zeetha is easy to recognize for her green hair, which barely any other characters possess. Her hair is waist-length and her skin is somewhat gold-tinged. Her canine teeth look a little bit like fangs. She is quite tall and physically fit compared to other women in the comic.
Personality[]
Zeetha's personality changed quite a bit since her introduction. When Agatha first met her, she was quiet, solitary, and somewhat on edge. Being isolated from Skifander for years made her wonder if her home country even existed or if she was simply insane.
However once spending more time with Agatha, she's become far more willing to open up to others. Meeting a person who had at least heard of her home country gave her a sense of relief she had never felt before. From that point on she was much more willing to be adventurous and to enjoy herself for a bit.
Zeetha is shown to be somewhat boisterous over the course of the comic. She likes getting the chance to battle someone, she mostly enjoys her adventures with Agatha, and she rather likes cake. In the post-timeskip volumes, this side of her is shown even more, to the point (Vol. 14 p. 27) that Violetta thinks she spent too much time with the Jägers.
Relationships[]
Agatha Heterodyne[]
“ | Zeetha: In this life I am allowed to train one other besides my own daughters. I have chosen you. The bond between us will be stronger than that of friends, of family, of lovers. As of now, we are "Kolee-dok-Zumil." Agatha: What does that mean? Zeetha: Ah - kind of hard to translate. Sort of like "teacher and student." Sort of like "cause and effect." Mostly, like "grindstone and knife." |
„ |
~ Vol. 4 (pp. 63-64 in print, unnumbered in web)) |
Zeetha adopted Agatha Heterodyne as her student in training. Zeetha considers herself a "Kolee" or mentor, with Agatha as her "Zumil" or student. In Skifandrian culture, the bond between "Kolee" and "Zumil" is considered more personal than even familial or romantic bonds.
The time Agatha and Zeetha had together changed both of them. On Agatha's side, Zeetha taught her to be more compitent, capable, and willing to stick up for herself. On Zeetha's side, her time around Agatha made her more willing to make friends and open up to others.
The Wulfenbachs[]
Zeetha seemingly does not know Klaus Wulfenbach to be her father "Chump". She was surprised when Klaus was able to speak Skiff to her (Vol. 6 p. 112), but didn't get much of a chance to continue talking to him.
She befriended Gilgamesh Wulfenbach in Mechanicaburg. Gil doesn't know who his mother is and so doesn't know he and Zeetha are related. However at one point (Vol. 9 p. 27) they get awfully close to the topic.
Axel Higgs[]
In Mechanicsburg, Zeetha fell in love with the airman Axel Higgs, first meeting him at a bar fight in Mamma Gkika's. They confessed their love for each other near the end of the siege, and they keep in contact in the two years following it. However, outside circumstances led to in-person meetings being rare.
When they reunited in England, Zeetha was elated to see Higgs again. It is also in England that Higgs revealed his true identity to her, which didn't put her off. They danced at a ball hosted by Queen Albia.
Abilities[]
Zeetha isn't a Spark, nor is she (at least in her earliest appearances) bio-modified. This doesn't stop her from being very capable.
- Physical combat skills: Zeetha is shown to be very athletic. She was trained as a warrior in her youth in Skifander, and she seeks to give this training to Agatha Heterodyne as well. Zeetha is able to hold her own in fights with capable opponents like Bangladesh DuPree and a Lucrezia-inhabited battle-clank. There are times where she took serious damage, usually in fighting much stronger opponents (e.g. Klaus) or ones willing to fight dirty (e.g. Zola), and even then she was able to survive in such fights.
- Effects of the Jägerdraught: After being gravely wounded by Zola, Zeetha was fixed up by being given Jägerdraught. This doesn't fully transform her into one of the Jägers, but it did make her more durable.
- Sword expertise: Zeetha owns a pair of Skifandrian swords - called Quata'aras in her native tongue (noted in Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess) - that she brought with her to Europa. They're currently stuck in Mechanicsburg, but she's able to make-do with other blades in the meantime.

Trivia[]
- The information that "Chump" is actually Klaus Wulfenbach came to light around August 21, 2010 when GITP forum user "datalaughing" posted a sketch he got from Phil (reposted in the "Klaus Defence League" LiveJournal group); he requested a sketch of "Chump" and recieved a portrait looking just like Klaus.
