Zia Rashid is a magician of The House of Life, Carter Kane's girlfriend and a character from the Kane Chronicles series.

Biography[]

Zia's first appearance was in The Red Pyramid where she along with Michael Desjardins followed Julius Kane along with his children Carter and Sadie to The British Museum where she became the host of the Egyptian river goddess Nephthys. She was then hidden away and replaced by a shabati. In the second book The Throne of Fire, Carter found the real Zia and she at first disliked him because he was a Kane (as the Kane family were seen as traitors to The House of Life) but eventually befriended him and Sadie. In the end of the final book, The Serpent's Shadow, after helping in defeating Apophis, Zia became Carter's girlfriend.

Personality[]

Zia is highly intelligent and can be harsh, determined, and single minded, making her an excellent combatant and strategist. However she is also passionate, holding those close to her heart whom she holds dear. She also possess a warm, soft, and vulnerable side that throughout the series only Carter gets to see. Despite her strength she can be scared, frightened, and intimidated, such as in "The Serpent's Shadow" she confides in Carter that she fears she is unworthy to host Ra. After kissing Carter, she tells him that she's scared to make connections with people because everyone she's ever loved (i.e. her parents, Iskandar, etc.) have all died but she's working through that fear with Carter's help.

Appearance[]

Zia is described as beautiful with vaguely Arabic features. She had straight jet black hair that ended at her jawline. By "The Serpent's Shadow" her hair has reached her shoulders. Her skin is caramel colored and she has amber colored eyes lined with kohl. When furious, Carter says her eyes look like they might ignite. She often wears linen clothing and Egyptian perfume. In "The Serpent's Shadow" she can oftentimes be seen wearing either white linen or camouflage clothes. Carter has described her as beautiful and dangerous. Carter also compares her to Queen Nefertiti, noting both women's high cheekbones and bright red lips. Ra gives her the last Khepri beetle and Zia wears it as a necklace and even when Ra merged with Khepri and was reborn Zia continues the wear the necklace.

Powers and abilities[]

Zia is an incredibly powerful magician, working her way up to become the Scribe of the First Nome, the most powerful position in the House of Life, right behind the Chief Lector, the Great Wife, and the Pharaoh. At the end of the series, Carter becomes Pharaoh, and Zia, being his girlfriend, becomes the Great Wife of the House of Life, the most powerful position in the House, right after the Pharaoh.

• Fire magic: This is Zia's specialty. She can cast the Pillar of Fire, the strongest spell a fire mage can cast

• Hieroglyphic spellcasting: Zia is considered a good enough spellcaster to teach Carter and Sadie the skill

• Portal summoning: Zia opens portals three times during "The Red Pyramid"

• Vitakinesis: In "The Serpent's Shadow" Zia tells Carter that Anne Grissom taught her healing magic

• Comet summoning: Channeling the power of Khepri-Ra, Zia can summon a small comet of fire

• Nephthys's Host: Zia gets the same powers as Nephthys's host as Carter and Sadie do as Horus and Isis's hosts

As the Eye of Ra

• Controlled ba travel: As she sleeps she can keep her ba in her body or at the very least prevent it from visiting enemies
