"Dino Slash! Parasaurolophus, bloom!"
~ Zoe Drake summoning Paris
"Look! It's the old lady."

Zoe Drake (Tatsuno Malm) is one of the two tritagonist (alongside with Paris) in the anime and video game series Dinosaur King. She is a spirited and determined young girl with a deep love for dinosaurs and a strong sense of justice to collect as much as she can many dinosaur cards as possible.

She is one of Max Taylor's best friends along with Rex Owen.

She is voiced by Tomoko Kobashi in the Japanese version, and by Kether Donohue in the English dub.

Appearance[]

There are noticeable variations in her appearance when comparing her portrayal in the arcade and DS Game to her depiction in the anime.

This character's fashion sense extends beyond her everyday attire. In various episodes of the anime, she can be seen in a range of different outfits. For instance, she effortlessly pulls off a vibrant green swimsuit with delicate pink trim, showcasing her confidence and style even at the beach. On another occasion, she dons a sleek and stealthy pink ninja suit, highlighting her versatility and ability to adapt to different roles. And during the festive season, she delights her fans with a charming Christmas outfit that is sure to spread holiday cheer. These are just a few examples of her diverse wardrobe, which can be explored further in the Gallery section. In the world of anime, this character is known for her distinctive appearance. Her hair is a soft, delicate shade of pastel pink, perfectly complementing her captivating violet purple eyes. She likes to experiment with her fashion choices, and one of her signature outfits consists of a midriff-baring top in a mysterious ebony-black shade. The top has short sleeves and is worn under an unbuttoned safari-vest that combines vibrant mustard and scarlet tones. To complete the ensemble, she opts for matching shorts, which are accompanied by a stylish leather fanny pack. The shorts perfectly mirror the colors of her vest, creating a harmonious and eye-catching look. Overall, this anime character's fashion choices are an integral part of her identity. From her pastel pink hair to her captivating violet eyes, every element of her appearance is carefully curated to create a unique and memorable look. She fearlessly embraces bold colors, interesting accessories, and playful hairstyles, making her a true fashion icon in the world of anime. When it comes to hairstyling, she prefers to wear her hair in pigtails, which are secured by adorable yellow scrunchies. These scrunchies not only keep her hair in place but also add a touch of whimsy and charm to her look. To add a touch of functionality to her fashion choices, she also dons sunglasses that cleverly double as a camera, allowing her to capture memorable moments wherever she goes. When it comes to footwear, she chooses to wear thigh-length, jet-black socks that add an edgy touch to her overall appearance. Her sneakers, on the other hand, are a delightful combination of vibrant lime and flacken tones, adding a pop of color to her ensemble. But her attention to detail doesn't stop there. She adorns her neck with a stunning emerald-green choker and a unique necklace made from a dinosaur's tooth. Additionally, she wears lime wristbands that add a playful and youthful element to her outfit.

In both the arcade and DS Game versions, her hair is a vibrant hot pink color with a hint of red, and her eyes are a captivating shade of violet purple. Her outfit consists of a black tank top that is concealed by a stylish yellow-and-red vest, which is fastened by buttons. Notably, the sleeves of the vest are longer in comparison to the anime version, while the tank top itself is slightly shorter than the shirt she wears in the anime. However, her shorts remain the same as they appeared in the anime. As for accessories, she opts for goggles instead of sunglasses, and although she still wears her signature green choker, she does not sport a dinosaur-tooth necklace.

Personality[]

Despite her caring nature, she can sometimes exhibit a bit of bossiness. Zoe tends to have a cheerful and carefree attitude, but she also maintains a rivalry with Ursula, whom she often refers to as "the old lady" (as seen in episode 1 and subsequent episodes). This particular comment greatly annoys Ursula, who is able to hear it no matter where she is. Additionally, Zoe takes on the role of bossing the boys around whenever Max's mother is not present, particularly when they fail to clean up after themselves. There is speculation that Zoe may have feelings for Rex, although it remains uncertain if she reciprocates those emotions as she has only shown an interest in famous individuals in the original series. Furthermore, Zoe displays a tough side, as she forcefully pushed Rex and delivered such a powerful smack to Jim that it sent him flying into the air, setting the stage for the following episode. As the series progresses, she may also begin to show a growing interest in the boys and attempts to persuade Max that a small kiss is insignificant, even leaning in to kiss him. Additionally, she becomes visibly irritated when the two boys develop crushes on Zahrah.

In the world of the arcade game, Zoe stands out as a character who exudes independence while simultaneously displaying a deep concern for her companions, Max and Rex, almost as if she were their older sister. What sets her apart is her ability to articulate herself using more refined and mature language, as if she were an adult. Zoe possesses a remarkable personality, one that is bold and unafraid to express her opinions and viewpoints. Moreover, her vivacious and cheerful demeanor adds an extra layer of charm to her character, making her truly unforgettable.

Biography[]

Dinosaur King[]

As the story unfolds, Zoe's presence becomes more significant, intertwining her fate with Max and the extraordinary world of the dinosaurs. As fate would have it, Terry and his notorious A-Team showed up in an attempt to capture Chomp, the awe-inspiring dinosaur that Max had summoned. But to their surprise, Max and Zoe stood their ground, witnessing the incredible power that Chomp possessed. Max's connection with his loyal dinosaur proved to be an impenetrable force against Terry and his accomplices. The sun had just begun to rise when Zoe made her entrance the morning following Max's encounter with the meteor. She was not pleased, to say the least, about being awoken so early. However, her displeasure quickly faded as they reached the crash site of the meteor. In a stroke of fate, Zoe stumbled upon the Grass stone and in that very moment, she became the chosen one to command the mighty Grass Dinosaurs. Adding fuel to the fire, Zoe couldn't resist taunting Ursula, a member of the A-Team, by referring to her as an "old lady." Of course, this remark did not sit well with Ursula and only fueled her annoyance further.

The following day, the members of the D-Team excitedly gather at the D-Lab, an impressive facility where Zoe's talented sister, Reese, has been diligently working on creating innovative gadgets. These gadgets have the remarkable ability to summon their beloved dinosaurs. As they step into the lab, the team is greeted by Dr. Owen, who has an exciting announcement to share. He proudly reveals that during a recent excavation in Alberta, Canada, he stumbled upon a monumental discovery - two dinosaur cards. One of these cards is for a magnificent Grass Parasaurolophus, while the other represents a formidable Wind Carnotaurus. The significance of this find is further heightened by the fact that accompanying these dinosaur cards are two equally valuable Move Cards, each tailored specifically for the abilities of their respective dinosaurs.

Mesozoic Meltdown[]

As the time-traveling group prepared to depart, Max and Zoe stood at the forefront, their hearts filled with a mix of sadness and gratitude. They waved goodbye to their dear friend and his entourage, knowing that this farewell marked the beginning of a new chapter in all their lives. They watched until the future group vanished from sight, cherishing the memories they had shared and hoping for the day when they would reunite once again. The weight of this revelation fell heavily upon Max and Zoe, leaving them crestfallen. They understood that their time together had come to an end, at least for now. However, they couldn't bear the thought of their beloved dinosaurs being left behind without their care. So, with a genuine plea, Max and Zoe entrusted Rex with the task of looking after their prehistoric companions, urging him to take good care of them in their absence. With mixed emotions, Zoe mustered up the courage to ask Rex if there was a possibility for him to come back and visit them. However, her hopes were shattered when Rex sadly explained that it was simply not feasible. The Backlander, their trusty time-traveling machine, had suffered irreparable damage to its engines, rendering it unable to make the journey back. On the other hand, the Spectral Space Pirates' ship, while capable of returning home, had limited energy that needed to be conserved for their own voyage back to their time. As the time came for Rex, his parents, and the Alpha Gang to embark on their journey to the future, both Max and Zoe couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness and longing. They realized that this farewell would be a heartfelt one, knowing that they might not see Rex again for a long time.

Trivia[]

  • On NagoyaTV's website, Zoe's age is mentioned as being 12 in the context of Mesozoic Meltdown. However, considering that Rex celebrated a birthday in the first season and the timeline of events is not clearly defined, it is possible that Zoe was also 11 at some point during the series, although this detail is not explicitly stated.
  • Both in the anime as well as the DS and arcade games, only she and Ursula possess noticeably distinct appearances compared to the other characters.
  • In the Official Anime Saimoe Tournament 2009, she competed in Group 5 and secured the 71st position with a total of 12 votes.
  • Her position in the Dinosaur King Ranker was 48th.
  • Zoe's attire for her arcade and DS game activities bears a striking resemblance to the fashionable ensemble worn by Runo Misaki in Spin Master's Bakugan Battle Brawlers.
  • Zoe's hairstyle is a popular and frequently observed type of hairdo often depicted in various anime series that feature characters with a domestic personality. One particular anime where this hairstyle is prominently showcased is Shugo Chara, especially when the protagonist Amu Hinamori undergoes a transformation with her guardian character named Su.
