Zubeia, also known as the Dragon Queen, is one of the three overarching protagonists (alongside King Harrow and Leola) of Netflix‘s The Dragon Prince franchise.
She is Avizandum's mate and the mother of Azymondias, who became depressed after both of them seemingly died, but after Team Zym were able to bring Azymondias back to her, Zubeia would become more hopeful and would grow to become a great ally of Katolis and Team Zym and aided them in their quest to stop Aaravos, even giving her life to stop him.
She was voiced by Nicole Oliver, who voiced Princess Celestia in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Carlita, Princess Ashlyn, Twyla, Queen Calissa, Lilliana Roxelle, and Lady Anne in the Barbie series, Sorceress of Castle Grayskull in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Meiling Li in the English Version of Cardraptor Sakura, and Zoe Trent in Littlest Pet Shop.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
At least 300 years before the story's events, Zubeia would fall in love with Avizandum. During his time fighting to become the king of the dragons, Zubeia would appear in the reunion between the dragons and Queen Aditi, but Aditi was killed by Aaravos before she could make the decision, which almost lead to a war between elves and dragons, as the former species believed that the dragons were behind Aditi's murder.
However, a human girl was able to find out about Aaravos' actions, and Zubeia and Avizandum were able to trick Aaravos and imprison him. Before the show's events, she was best friends with Domina Profundis, but after the death of Domina's loyal friend, the Empress of the Deep, she decided to isolate herself and dedicate her time to protect the ocean, with not even Zubeia begging her not to changing her mind.
Sometime later, Zubeia and Avizandum became parents to an unhatched egg, which they would call the future dragon Azymondias. However, her mate was killed by King Harrow and Viren and her egg was seemingly destroyed (in reality, Viren stole the egg to use to get more powerful), Zubeia became broken over these events, and ordered a group of Moonshadow Assassins to murder King Harrow and his son Ezran, with Harrow's assassination being successful, although Ezran's was unsucessful. Zubeia would then fall ill and fell in a deep slumber.
The Dragon Prince[]
Despite this, Ezran, his brother Callum, and one of the Moonshadow Assassins named Rayla would find out that the egg was still intact and went on a quest to return Azymondias to his mother, and during this, the egg hatched and the dragon was born. When they got to the Storm Spire, however, they find Zubeia, still in her slumber, but she awoke from it after the battle of the Storm Spire against Viren's army was over, and was happy that humans and elves brought her son back.
After this, Zubeia would try to walk through a storm, but after being unable to find its heart, decided to land to when she felt she could not fly any longer. She then had an illusion of Rex Igneous, who started taunting her for the innability of not being able to do more.
After she found Zym's hollow empty, Zubeia went after him, and after she found him playing around his father's statued body. Zubeia then told her son that they needed to leave, and while she was initialy angry at Azymondias' refusal, shs came to understand why, because his father's corpse will be the closest thing he will ever have to remember him.
Zubeia then decided to talk about how Avizandum was, and said that Azymondias had many of the good qualities he had. She then started feeling hurt on the inside, as she came to remeber what Rex Igneous said about how he enjoyed killing humans, and she thought that he wasn't really wrong, as Avizandum talked about his achievements and left the remains of the human armies he wiped out as a reminder of his triumphs.
Zubeia then decided to bring Azymondias down from a cliff where there was grass filled with flowers. Rain then came and Zubeia protected her son from it with her wing, and Azymondias pressed against her, and for a moment of the storm, she saw Avizandum's body with a gentle smile.
Two years later, Zubeia would go to a ceremony made by Ezran to represent the peace between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms. During it, Zubeia would find a portraid of her with Ezran and Azymondias torn appart, with Ezran then making a speech about how anger still exists even when there is peace, but they should still keep their kindness even at the worse moments.
Zubeia would comment on how Ezran made her pain feel less and made her feel like she was healing, calling him a wise and special boy. After this, they see a message sent by Ibis about how Aaravos had returned, so Zubeia decides to go to the Storm Spire, but Azymondias disappeared, although Ezran would bring him back.
After this, Zubeia and Team Zym would go to the Storm Spire, and during the travel to it, Zubeia told Ezran about Aaravos' past and actions, and after they got to the Spire, they found a dead Ibis in the top of the mountain, so they have a small ceremony to honor their friend before trying to analise Aaravos' mirror.
While analizing the mirror, Aaravos would possess Callum, and while doing so, he would taunt Zubeia over Avizandum's death and mock the members of Team Zym over their insecurities, and would tell them that his return was inevitable. After this, Aaravos would destroy his mirror, and Zubeia decides to go to Umber Tor to find Rex Igneous, since Rex had a clue to where Aaravos was imprisoned, and told Azymondias to stay in the Storm Spire.
However, when they got there, they find out that the only entrance to Umber Tor was far too small for Zubeia to go through, so Team Zym go through it to find Rex while Zubeia stayed in the Storm Spire. It's later revealed that Azymondias disobeid his mother and went to Umber Tor anyway, and after they were able to escape from Umber Tor, Zubeia appeared and saved Team Zym from Rex. While Zubeia was angry at her son for disobeing her, she was still happy that they weren't dead, and allowed Azymondias to take part in the team hug.
Later, Zubeia would bring Ezran, Soren, Azymondias, and Corvus to the Storm Spire so they could find the Siren Stone in the Arcus Vault. However, she had Pyrrah guide them through there, as the vault had painful memories that she didn't want to see again. After getting the stone, Zubeia would bring the group to meet Domina Profundis, and convinced Domina to listen to what Ezran had to say after she initially refused to talk with Ezran, who would ask if she knew the location of Aaravos' prison, which she denied knowing, but told Ezran of archmage Akiyu, a tidebound elf who built the prison.
Zubeia would then rescue Callum and Rayla from several corrupted banthers at the Bookery of Lux Aurea, but when she was trying to leave the place, Zubeia got bit by one of the banthers, although she ended being saved by Corvus which allowed her to fly away back to the Storm Spire. In the morning, she noticed that her bite wound was slowly infecting her body, with Soren telling her that she needed rest, which, while she thanked Soren for his advice, Zubeia still decided not to show the wound to any of the other members of the group and keep it hidden.
Zubeia would then bring them to the tidepools where Akiyu lived, before going back to the Storm Spire. While she originally planned to go back to the tidepools to get Team Zym, her injuries would start to infect all of her body, which almost lead to her death. During this, she had a dream where she would meet Avizandum, who told her to keep living for the good of Azymondias.
Zubeia then woke up, and tried to get to the tidepools before falling to a middle of a forest due to her being exausted and in pain. When it seemed like it was her end, however, the Mushroom Mage Mukho saved her by healing her infection.
He then brought her to Fungi Lane and put her inside of a tree so she could rest and heal frol her wounds, making her shrink by having her eat a mush-mallow. A few days later, Soren, Corvus and Azymondias went to find her, and ending up tracking her to Fungi Lane, Mukho brought them to the tree where Zubeia was and gave Zym a mush-mallow so he could talk with his mother.
There, Zubeia sees Zym and is glad to find him, but refuses to go with him as her wounds were making her unable to move and would also not allow Zym to stay with her as the Sunforge corruption could infect him as well. Zubeia tells Zym that she will heal, but Mukho's treatments would take sometime to do so. She then said to Zym that he should go to Ezran, referring to him as Zym's brother. The trio then left with Pyrrah in the evening.
Personality[]
Zubeia is a wise and kind dragon, who is able to forgive others and put grudges aside. She also loves her family deeply, as she became depressed over the death of her mate Avizandum and seemingly of the destruction of her egg. Because of this, Zubeia's sadness turned into rage and she ordered Moonshadow Assassins to kill Ezran and King Harrow.
However, she was still happy to see Ezran bringing her son back to her and for humans to be togheter with elves. Zubeia also has a temper when things don't go her way, however, and will lash out at those who don't do what she asks them to do or refuse to tell her something. Zubeia was also touched by Ezran's speech, and complimented him for it.
It's revealed that Zubeia had a hard time accepting Avizandum's death, as she refused to go see his stoned body, and once yelled at Zym for trying to stay close to it. Despite this, she came to understand that she was wrong and decided to help her son feel better by telling him about his father and how he had many of his father's best traits, and will have many traits of his own, with one of that he already has being that he is loved by both his parents.
After being bit by a corrupted banther and the infection started to grow over her body, Zubeia reveals in a dream she had about Avizandum that she wishes to be together with Avizandum again, although Avizandum tells her to continue to continue to try to continue for the good of Azymondias, which lead to Zubeia, while still exausted and injured to try to get to fly to help Team Zym.
Zubeia's respect for Ezran is seen at it's most notable when he talks to Zym after begining to heal from her Sunforge corruption thanks to Mukho, as he refers to Ezran as Zym's brother, which shows that she has come to see the great emotional bond between the two.
